## The Quick Answer

The best hotels in Dharamshala depend on which part of town you stay in. **Lower Dharamshala** (Kotwali Bazaar, Civil Lines and the resorts on Khaniyara Road) suits families with a car, cricket fans and anyone who wants easy road access; **McLeod Ganj** suits first-timers who want to walk to the Dalai Lama Temple and the cafes; **Naddi and Dharamkot** have the biggest Dhauladhar views and the quietest nights. In 2026 expect approx. ₹900-1,800 a night for a clean budget room, ₹2,000-4,500 for a good mid-range hotel and ₹5,000-25,000+ for upscale hotels and resorts, with peak-season weekends at the top of each range.

Every hotel named below is listed on our [hotels page](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels), where you can check rooms and send us your dates. We are a local team based in Dharamshala, so we have written this the way we would brief a friend: what each place is good at, and what it is not.

## First, Understand Where "Dharamshala" Is

Many travellers book a "Dharamshala hotel" without realising how spread out the town is. Lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are about 9-10 km apart by road and roughly 400 m apart in altitude, and the drive takes 20-30 minutes by taxi (approx. ₹300-500). Some listings described as Dharamshala are actually in Sidhbari, Kandi or out towards Kangra, so always check the map pin.

| Area | Altitude (approx.) | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower Dharamshala (Kotwali Bazaar, Civil Lines, bus stand) | 1,250-1,450 m | Working Himachali town, easy roads | Families with cars, transit, cricket |
| Khaniyara Road and Kandi | Lower slopes below the Dhauladhar | Resorts with grounds and pools | Families, couples wanting a resort |
| Sidhbari | Below Dharamshala | Green, quiet, Tibetan institutes | Culture, slow travel |
| McLeod Ganj | approx. 1,750-2,080 m | Busy, Tibetan, walkable | First-timers, culture, food |
| Naddi and Dal Lake | 1,950-2,100 m | Calm ridge, big views | Couples, views, families with a car |
| Bhagsu and Dharamkot | 1,800-2,000 m+ | Villages, cafes, yoga, trails | Backpackers, trekkers, long stays |

If you are still deciding between the two halves of town, our [Dharamshala vs McLeod Ganj comparison](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-vs-mcleod-ganj) goes into it in detail. For the upper town specifically, read our companion guide to the [best hotels in McLeod Ganj](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/best-hotels-in-mcleod-ganj).

## Best Hotels in Lower Dharamshala

Lower Dharamshala does not have the cafe scene of McLeod Ganj, but it wins on space, parking and access. Roads reach the door, the airport and the HPCA stadium are close, and resorts here have grounds that hotels squeezed onto McLeod Ganj's hillside cannot match.

### Radisson Blu Resort Dharamshala (Kandi, Khaniyara Road)

[Radisson Blu Resort Dharamshala](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/radisson-blu-resort-dharamshala-kandi) is one of the most complete resorts in the area: an outdoor pool plus a separate children's pool, a full-service spa with sauna, a gym, a bar and play areas for kids. Standard rooms are about 32 sq m and sleep two adults plus two children, and there is a 72 sq m family duplex for four. It sits roughly 4 km from Kotwali Bazaar, about 15 minutes' drive from the HPCA stadium and about half an hour from Gaggal airport. **Best for:** families, wedding parties and cricket trips. **Trade-off:** McLeod Ganj is about 35 minutes away, so budget for taxis.

### Atman, Dharamshala (Kandi, Khaniyara Road)

[Atman](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/atman-dharamshala-kandi) is a small Leisure Hotels boutique resort, opened in 2021 and built in the traditional kath-kuni style of layered stone and timber. With fewer than twenty rooms, a garden cafe and lounge, a yoga and meditation space and a library, it feels very different from a big resort. The premium suites have balconies facing the Dhauladhar. **Best for:** couples and families who want a quiet, design-led stay. **Trade-off:** like the Radisson, it is a drive from McLeod Ganj and the airport.

### Panchvati Cottages (Rakkar Road)

[Panchvati Cottages](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/panchvati-cottages) on Rakkar Road is one of the properties you can book directly on our site, listed at approx. ₹4,000-9,700 a night (Super Deluxe rooms from around ₹5,000, family rooms from around ₹7,000, where a child can stay free). It has on-site parking, WiFi and air conditioning in some rooms, and is couple friendly. **Best for:** couples and small families arriving by car who want a straightforward lower-town base. **Note:** no pets.

### HPTDC Hotel Kunal (near the bus stand)

[HPTDC Hotel Kunal](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hptdc-hotel-kunal-dharamshala) is the Himachal Tourism hotel a few minutes' walk from the Dharamshala bus stand. Rooms are simple deluxe and semi-deluxe categories with attached bathrooms and hot water, and there is a restaurant, room service and parking. It will not win prizes for character, but if your overnight Volvo arrives at dawn or you leave early, it is hard to beat for convenience. Kotwali Bazaar is about 5 minutes' drive and the HPCA stadium about 10. **Best for:** transit stays, families and cricket fans on a budget.

### Norling House, Norbulingka Institute (Sidhbari)

[Norling House](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/norling-house-norbulingka-sidhbari) is the guesthouse inside the Norbulingka Institute's gardens, among water channels, small bridges and shady trees. Each room is themed on an animal from Tibetan mythology, with furniture and paintings from the institute's own workshops, and breakfast is included. You can walk the grounds before the day visitors arrive. Gyuto Monastery is about 10 minutes' drive. Read our [Sidhbari guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/sidhbari-norbulingka-gyuto-guide) for what is nearby. **Best for:** culture lovers and slow travellers. **Trade-off:** McLeod Ganj is about 40 minutes by taxi.

### The Hosteller Dharamshala (Bangatu)

[The Hosteller](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/the-hosteller-dharamshala-bangatu) is a rural hostel well away from the crowds, with mixed and female-only dorms that have en-suite bathrooms, private rooms, a rooftop vegetarian cafe with valley views and workstations. Be honest with yourself about access: the last 4 km or so is an unpaved road and there is no on-site parking, so come by taxi. The bus stand is about 7 km away. **Best for:** backpackers and remote workers who want quiet.

## Best Hotels Up the Hill: McLeod Ganj, Naddi, Bhagsu and Dharamkot

Most visitors who search for hotels in Dharamshala actually end up staying in the upper town, because that is where the Dalai Lama Temple, the Tibetan cafes and the Triund trail are. Here are our standout picks; the [McLeod Ganj hotels guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/best-hotels-in-mcleod-ganj) covers the area in much more depth.

### McLeod Ganj

- [WelcomHeritage Natraj](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/welcomheritage-natraj-mcleod-ganj): 32 rooms about 200 m from the Dalai Lama's residence, with a temperature-controlled pool, library, bar and parking.
- [Chonor House](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/chonor-house-temple-road-mcleod-ganj): run by the Norbulingka Institute on a lane off Temple Road, each room decorated with Tibetan murals and handmade furniture. Steep approach with steps.

- [Dragon I Resorts](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/dragon-i-resorts-naddi): about a dozen heated rooms a 3-minute walk from the Naddi viewpoint, including family rooms that sleep four.
- [Fortune Park Moksha](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/fortune-park-moksha-satobari): an ITC-group hotel at Satobari near Dal Lake with around 60 rooms, a pool, spa and gym; you will need taxis.

### Bhagsu and Dharamkot

- [Hyatt Regency Dharamshala Resort](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hyatt-regency-dharamshala-resort-dharamkot): luxury villas and rooms in deodar forest, with a heated pool and spa.

## Best Hotels in Dharamshala by Budget

| Budget tier | Approx. price per night (2026) | What you typically get | Where to look | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorm | ₹400-800 per bed | Bunk, locker, shared or en-suite bath, social common area | Bhagsu, Dharamkot, Bangatu | [The Hosteller](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/the-hosteller-dharamshala-bangatu), [Zostel Dharamkot](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/zostel-dharamkot-upper-bhagsu) |
| Budget room | ₹900-1,800 | Private room, attached bathroom, hot water, simple furnishing | Bus stand area, McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu | [HPTDC Hotel Kunal](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hptdc-hotel-kunal-dharamshala), [Green Hotel](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/green-hotel-bhagsu-road-mcleod-ganj), [Hotel Shivaay Morex](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hotel-shivaay-grand-bhagsu) |
| Mid-range | ₹2,000-4,500 | Balcony or view, heater in winter, restaurant, often breakfast | McLeod Ganj, Naddi, Bhagsu, Sidhbari | [Norling House](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/norling-house-norbulingka-sidhbari), [Udechee Huts](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/udechee-huts-naddi), [Regenta Inn](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/regenta-inn-luxinna-heights-bhagsu) |
| Upscale and boutique | ₹5,000-10,000 | Larger rooms, strong views, good restaurant, parking | Lower Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Satobari | [Panchvati Cottages](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/panchvati-cottages), [Atman](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/atman-dharamshala-kandi), [Fortune Park Moksha](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/fortune-park-moksha-satobari) |
| Luxury resort | ₹10,000-25,000+ | Spa, pool, grounds, full-service dining | Khaniyara Road, Dharamkot | [Radisson Blu](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/radisson-blu-resort-dharamshala-kandi), [Hyatt Regency](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hyatt-regency-dharamshala-resort-dharamkot) |

A few honest notes on value:

- **Budget rooms** are genuinely good value here, but check for hot water and a heater between November and March. A cheap room with a weak geyser is a miserable room in January.
- **The mid-range is the sweet spot.** For approx. ₹2,500-4,000 you can usually get a balcony with a mountain view, which is the single thing most guests remember.
- **Upscale does not always mean better views.** Some of the best Dhauladhar views are from mid-range places in Naddi, while some expensive rooms face the valley or another building. Ask which way the room faces.

## Best Hotels for Your Type of Trip

### Families with children or elderly parents

Choose road access first and views second. [Radisson Blu](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/radisson-blu-resort-dharamshala-kandi) has a kids' pool and play areas; [Fortune Park Moksha](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/fortune-park-moksha-satobari) has a lift, pool and babysitting; [HPTDC Hotel Bhagsu](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hptdc-hotel-bhagsu-mcleod-ganj) gives you lawns and parking in McLeod Ganj itself. Avoid properties down long flights of steps. Our [family travel guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-with-kids-family-guide) and [guide for senior citizens](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-for-senior-citizens) have more.

### Couples and honeymooners

For romance, pick a Dhauladhar-facing balcony. [Hyatt Regency](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hyatt-regency-dharamshala-resort-dharamkot) and [Atman](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/atman-dharamshala-kandi) are the special-occasion picks; [Udechee Huts](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/udechee-huts-naddi) and [Dragon I Resorts](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/dragon-i-resorts-naddi) in Naddi give you sunrise views for much less; [Chonor House](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/chonor-house-temple-road-mcleod-ganj) is the most characterful in McLeod Ganj. See our [honeymoon guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/honeymoon-in-dharamshala).

### Cricket fans

Stay in lower Dharamshala. On match days the roads to McLeod Ganj clog up, and you will be glad to be within a short drive of the ground. [HPTDC Hotel Kunal](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hptdc-hotel-kunal-dharamshala) is about 10 minutes away and [Radisson Blu](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/radisson-blu-resort-dharamshala-kandi) and [Atman](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/atman-dharamshala-kandi) about 15. Book as soon as a fixture is announced. Our [HPCA stadium guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/hpca-cricket-stadium-guide) covers tickets, parking and traffic.

### With or without a car

Parking is the hidden cost of McLeod Ganj. If you are driving, lower Dharamshala, Naddi and Satobari are easier; in the upper town, [WelcomHeritage Natraj](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/welcomheritage-natraj-mcleod-ganj), [HPTDC Hotel Bhagsu](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/hptdc-hotel-bhagsu-mcleod-ganj) and [Regenta Inn Luxinna Heights](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/regenta-inn-luxinna-heights-bhagsu) list parking. Without a car, base yourself in McLeod Ganj or Bhagsu and walk; see our [local transport guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/local-transport-dharamshala) for buses and taxis.

### Travelling with a dog

Pet-friendly hotels are still rare. [Mastiff Select Mandavya](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/mastiff-select-mandavya-dharamkot) welcomes pets, and [The Hosteller](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/the-hosteller-dharamshala-bangatu) allows them in private rooms only. Read our [pets guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/travelling-with-pets-dharamshala) before you go.

### Remote workers and long stays

Look for good WiFi, a work table and somewhere to eat on site. [Eevolve Dharamkot](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/eevolve-eco-hostel-dharamkot) has a coworking corner, [The Hosteller](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/the-hosteller-dharamshala-bangatu) has workstations, and [Aliza Inn and Suites](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels/aliza-inn-and-suites-naddi) in Naddi is known for fast WiFi. Our [digital nomad guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-for-digital-nomads) covers internet and backup options.

## Hotel Prices by Season

| July-August | Low (monsoon) | Often 20-40% lower | A few days |
| September | Recovering | Normal to slightly lower | 1-2 weeks |
| October-November | High (clear skies, festival holidays) | High | 2-4 weeks |

See our [best time to visit guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-dharamshala) for weather and crowds, our [winter snowfall guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-in-winter-snowfall) if you are coming for snow, and our [Christmas and New Year guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-christmas-new-year) for the busiest fortnight.

## What to Check Before You Book

These are the questions our team asks before recommending any room:

1. **Exact location.** "Dharamshala" on a listing can mean anywhere from Sidhbari to the Kangra highway. Check the map pin against where you will spend your days.
2. **Can a car reach the door?** In McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot many guesthouses are down steps or along footpaths. With heavy bags, children or elders, this matters more than the room.
3. **Steps and slopes.** Hillside hotels often have stairs inside too, and few have lifts. If mobility is a concern, read our [accessibility guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/accessibility-dharamshala-limited-mobility).
4. **Heating and hot water in winter.** From November to March, ask whether rooms have heaters (and whether they cost extra) and how long the geyser takes to heat.
5. **Mountain or valley view.** The Dhauladhar is to the north. "Valley view" is pleasant, but it is not the snow peaks.
6. **Power backup.** Short power cuts are common, especially in storms. Ask whether the hotel has an inverter or generator, and whether it covers WiFi and geysers.
7. **Parking.** If you are driving, confirm parking at the hotel, not "nearby".
8. **Noise.** Rooms on the main roads in McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu pick up horns and late-night chatter. Ask for a room at the back.
9. **Meals.** Some places are pure vegetarian; some have no restaurant at all. Fine in McLeod Ganj, harder in Naddi or Bangatu.

## FAQs

**Which is the best area to stay in Dharamshala?**
For a first visit without a car, McLeod Ganj is the best area because the Dalai Lama Temple, cafes and the Triund trail are all walkable. **How much does a hotel in Dharamshala cost per night?**
In 2026 expect approx. ₹900-1,800 for a clean budget room, ₹2,000-4,500 for a mid-range hotel with a view, ₹5,000-10,000 for upscale and boutique stays, and ₹10,000-25,000+ for luxury resorts. Hostel dorm beds cost approx. ₹400-800. Peak weekends cost more; monsoon and January-February are often 20-40% cheaper.

**Which are the best luxury hotels in Dharamshala?**
The top-end options include the Hyatt Regency Dharamshala Resort in Dharamkot, Radisson Blu Resort Dharamshala on Khaniyara Road, the Atman boutique resort in Kandi, WelcomHeritage Natraj in McLeod Ganj and Fortune Park Moksha near Dal Lake. See our luxury Dharamshala guide for a fuller comparison.

**Which hotels are closest to the HPCA cricket stadium?**
Stay in lower Dharamshala. HPTDC Hotel Kunal near the bus stand is about 10 minutes by car from the stadium, and Radisson Blu Resort and Atman in Kandi are about 15 minutes away. Book as soon as a match is announced, because hotels near the ground fill quickly.

**Is it better to stay in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj?**
McLeod Ganj is better for culture, cafes and walking everywhere; lower Dharamshala is better for parking, space, the airport and the cricket stadium. They are about 9-10 km apart and 20-30 minutes by taxi, so many travellers stay in one and visit the other.

**Do Dharamshala hotels have heating in winter?**
Most mid-range and upscale hotels provide room heaters, and some budget places do too, sometimes for an extra charge. From November to March always confirm heating and hot water before booking, especially in McLeod Ganj, Naddi and Dharamkot, which are colder than the lower town.

**Are there family-friendly hotels in Dharamshala with parking?**
Yes. Radisson Blu Resort has a kids pool and play areas, Fortune Park Moksha has a lift, pool and babysitting, and HPTDC Hotel Bhagsu in McLeod Ganj and HPTDC Hotel Kunal near the bus stand both have parking. Avoid hillside guesthouses reached only by steps.

**How far in advance should I book a hotel in Dharamshala?**
Book 3-4 weeks ahead for April-June weekends and long weekends, and 4-6 weeks ahead for Christmas and New Year. In the monsoon (July-August) and January-February you can usually find rooms a few days before you travel.
