**Short answer:** For **likely snow** in Himachal in winter, go high: Solang and the Atal Tunnel side of Manali, Narkanda, Kufri and Triund see snow far more often than the towns, and Spiti is snow-bound but reachable only via Kinnaur. For a **winter trip that works with or without snow**, Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, Bir, Palampur and Shimla stay open and lively. January and early February have given the best snow odds in recent years; December 2025 was dry across Himachal.

We live and work in Dharamshala, so we see every winter how often "snow trips" end with brown hills. This guide ranks places by what you can realistically expect between December and February, flags the roads that close, and links to our detailed guides. Checked against official pages and news reports on 26 October 2026.

## Which places in Himachal have the best chance of snow?

**The higher you go, the better your odds, and the harder the roads.**

- **Solang and the Atal Tunnel side of Manali.** Higher than Manali town, so snow tends to come here earlier and stay longer. After fresh snow, police restrict traffic beyond Solang: on 2 January 2021 about 250 tourist vehicles were turned back (The Tribune). Rohtang Pass itself closes to traffic for the winter. Read [Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel status](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/rohtang-pass-atal-tunnel-status) and [Manali in December and January](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/manali-in-december-january).
- **Kufri and Narkanda, above Shimla.** On 28 December 2020 Kufri had 30 cm and Narkanda 15 cm while Shimla had 9 cm (The Tribune). Narkanda runs ski courses from January to March when there is snow (Incredible India). See [Shimla in December](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/shimla-in-december-christmas-new-year).
- **Triund, above McLeod Ganj.** At about 2,850 m, the ridge holds snow roughly December to March, but a Kangra district order of 6 January 2026 restricted trekking above 3,000 m and made SP Kangra permission mandatory for Triund. Check the current position before you go: [Triund trek guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/triund-trek-complete-guide) and our [guided Triund trek](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/treks/triund-trek).
- **Naddi and Dharamkot.** The likeliest places for snow on your doorstep in the Dharamshala area: on 23 and 24 January 2026, Dharamkot got about 3 inches and Naddi about 2 inches. See [when it snows in Dharamshala](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-in-winter-snowfall).
- **Spiti.** Snow is near-certain in mid-winter, but so are extremely cold nights; read [Spiti Valley in winter](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/spiti-valley-in-winter) before you consider it.

Follow this winter’s reports in our [Himachal snowfall tracker](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/himachal-snowfall-tracker).

## Where to go in Himachal in winter without snow?

**Some of the best winter trips do not need snow at all.**

- **Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.** Clear December days give the sharpest views of the snow-capped Dhauladhar. The Dalai Lama Temple, monasteries, Tibetan food and cafes do not depend on weather. Start with our [Dharamshala in December and January guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-in-december-january) and [McLeod Ganj in December](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/mcleod-ganj-in-december).
- **Bir.** Paragliding continues through winter on clear days; the season runs from mid-September to mid-July, and it is cold at the Billing take-off. See the [Bir Billing paragliding guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/bir-billing-paragliding-guide) and [book paragliding](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/paragliding).
- **Palampur.** Tea gardens and Andretta’s artists, with snowy peaks behind: [Palampur travel guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/palampur-travel-guide).
- **Pong Dam.** A Ramsar wetland that hosts well over a lakh waterbirds in a good winter, peaking December to February: [Pong Dam bird sanctuary guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/pong-dam-bird-sanctuary-guide).
- **Shimla at Christmas.** The Ridge, Christ Church and the Winter Carnival make it festive even when dry.
- **Kangra Valley Carnival.** Our separate guide covers the [Kangra Valley Carnival 2026](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/kangra-valley-carnival-2026).

## Place by place: what to expect in winter 2026-27

### Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

Snow in lower Dharamshala is rare; upper areas (McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Naddi, Dharamkot) see snow on a few days between late December and February, mostly January. The highway via Kangra stays open, and Kangra Airport at Gaggal is 13 km from Dharamshala. **Suits:** first-timers, families, anyone who wants culture plus mountain views. Stay: [hotels in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels); arrive with our [Gaggal airport to McLeod Ganj taxi](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/taxi/gaggal-airport-to-mcleod-ganj-taxi).

### Naddi and Dharamkot

Quiet villages above McLeod Ganj at roughly 1,900 to 2,100 m, and the best bet in the area for snow outside your window. Roads can ice or block for a day after snow. **Suits:** couples and long-stayers. Guides: [Naddi and Dal Lake](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/naddi-dal-lake-guide), [Dharamkot](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamkot-travel-guide).

### Triund (winter caution)

Snow-covered ridge, big views, real risk. Snow and ice on the upper trail make it a different trek from October’s. The January 2026 district order on treks above 3,000 m means permission and weather alerts matter. **Suits:** fit hikers with a local guide, never solo after snow.

### Bir

Low snow odds, crisp clear days, and tandem flights when the weather allows. About 65 to 70 km from Dharamshala (2 to 2.5 hours). **Suits:** adventure seekers who want a winter activity that is not snow. Guide: [Bir travel guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/bir-travel-guide).

### Palampur

About 35 to 40 km from Dharamshala. Tea gardens are dormant in winter but the Dhauladhar backdrop is at its whitest. **Suits:** slow travellers and families.

### Dalhousie and Khajjiar

Regular snow between late December and February; the Dalhousie to Khajjiar stretch is the one most likely to close after heavy snow, sometimes for days. The Jot Pass shortcut is often closed or unsafe from roughly December to March. About 120 to 130 km from Dharamshala, 4 to 5 hours. **Suits:** families who want snow play within reach. Guide: [Dalhousie and Khajjiar from Dharamshala](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dalhousie-khajjiar-from-dharamshala).

![Snow peaks above the upper Kullu valley near Palchan, on the road from Manali to Solang](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/images/places/kullu-valley.jpg)

### Manali, Solang and Sissu

Manali town had no snow at Christmas 2025 and only got its first heavy snow around 23 January 2026; Solang and the Atal Tunnel side get snow earlier and more often. Plan a buffer day for closures beyond Solang. About 235 km from Dharamshala (7 to 8 hours). **Suits:** snow play and honeymooners who accept crowds. Guides: [Manali in December and January](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/manali-in-december-january), [Dharamshala to Manali](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-to-manali).

### Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda

Shimla town’s first snow came after December in three of the last four winters; Kufri and Narkanda do better. Christmas on the Ridge and the ice rink (from early to mid-December in recent years) are the draws. **Suits:** Christmas and New Year trips, skiing in January to March when snow allows. Guides: [Shimla in December](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/shimla-in-december-christmas-new-year), [Shimla to Dharamshala](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/shimla-to-dharamshala).

### Spiti (winter route via Kinnaur)

The Manali side is shut: the Keylong-Kaza road over Kunzum Pass "generally remains closed" from about October or November to June or July, according to the Lahaul-Spiti district administration, and in 2024 the Gramphu-Losar stretch was closed by order from 23 November. The winter way in is the Shimla-Kinnaur road, which the district calls an "almost all-weather" route: about 412 km and roughly 20 hours of driving from Shimla to Kaza, plus an overnight halt. **Suits:** experienced winter travellers with time, warm gear and a driver who knows the route. Guide: [Spiti Valley in winter](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/spiti-valley-in-winter).

### Kasol and Tosh

Kasol, in the Parvati Valley, is about 75 to 80 km from Manali via Bhuntar. Kasol itself rarely gets heavy snow; Tosh, higher up the valley, is likelier to. **Suits:** backpackers and slow travellers.

### Jibhi and Tirthan

Wooden cabins and forest walks in the Banjar area. **Jalori Pass**, above Jibhi on NH-305, is the winter problem: in winter 2024-25 it was closed for 36 days, and fresh snow on 5 February 2025 shut it again (The Tribune, 9 February 2025). Jibhi is reachable from the Aut side; do not plan to cross Jalori in mid-winter. **Suits:** couples wanting a cabin and a fireplace.

### Chail and Kasauli

Lower hill stations close to Chandigarh, good for a two or three night winter break. Do not plan a trip here around snow. **Suits:** short breaks from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab.

## How should I plan a Himachal winter trip? 3, 5 and 7 day ideas

Short winter days and icy evening roads mean **no more than one long drive per day, finished in daylight**.

### 3 days

| Start | Plan |
|---|---|
| From Delhi | Overnight bus or flight to Dharamshala (Gaggal). Day 1 McLeod Ganj and the Dalai Lama Temple; Day 2 Naddi and Dharamkot, or a guided Triund hike if permitted; Day 3 Bhagsu and return. See our [3-day Dharamshala itinerary](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-3-day-itinerary) |
| From Chandigarh | Shimla, Kufri and the Ridge, or Kasauli and Chail |
| From Dharamshala | Day 1 Palampur; Day 2 Bir (paragliding); Day 3 Pong Dam birds or Kangra Fort |

### 5 days

| Start | Plan |
|---|---|
| From Delhi | Two days Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, one day Bir, then two days Dalhousie and Khajjiar for snow (via the Banikhet route) |
| From Dharamshala | Two days around McLeod Ganj and Naddi, then three days Manali with a buffer day for Solang or Sissu |

### 7 days

| Start | Plan |
|---|---|
| From Delhi (northern loop) | Delhi to Dharamshala (2 nights), Bir (1 night), Manali (3 nights including Solang/Sissu), overnight bus back. Full route: [Delhi, Dharamshala, Bir and Manali itinerary](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/himachal-itinerary-delhi-dharamshala-manali) |

## Winter safety and booking tips

1. **Book refundable rooms** for snow trips; nobody can promise snow a month ahead.
2. **Keep a buffer day.** Roads beyond Dhalli (Shimla), Solang (Manali) and Lakkar Mandi (Khajjiar) close after heavy snow.
3. **No driving after dark.** Black ice forms on shaded bends in the evening and early morning.
4. **Use local drivers** who know winter roads; most taxis do not carry chains.
5. **Check permissions** for high treks in Kangra (Triund, Kareri) before you set off.
6. **Pack for minus temperatures** in the upper areas: our [what to pack guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-weather-what-to-pack).
7. **Check live updates** before each drive: our [travel updates](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/travel-updates) page and the district administrations’ social media.

## FAQs

**Which is the best place to see snow in Himachal in winter?**
The higher places: Solang and the Atal Tunnel side of Manali, Narkanda and Kufri above Shimla, and Triund above McLeod Ganj get snow far more often than the towns. January and early February have given the best odds in recent winters; December 2025 was dry across Himachal, and Shimla and Manali got their first snow only on 23 January 2026.

**Does it snow in Dharamshala in winter?**
In the upper areas, on a few days between late December and February, mostly in January. Dharamkot got about 3 inches and Naddi about 2 inches on 23 and 24 January 2026. Lower Dharamshala rarely gets snow, while the Triund ridge above McLeod Ganj holds snow roughly from December to March.

**Can you visit Spiti Valley in winter?**
Yes, but only via Shimla and Kinnaur. The Manali-Kaza road over Kunzum Pass generally stays closed from about October or November to June or July, according to the Lahaul-Spiti district administration. The Shimla-Kaza route is about 412 km and roughly 20 hours of driving, and it can still close for a few days after heavy snow.

**Is Triund open in winter?**
The trail is snowy and icy in winter, and a Kangra district order of 6 January 2026 restricted trekking above 3,000 m and made SP Kangra permission mandatory for Triund, with permissions cancelled on weather alerts. Check the current position before you go and hike only with a local guide after snow.

**Which places in Himachal are good in winter without snow?**
Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj for Tibetan culture and clear Dhauladhar views, Bir for paragliding on clear days, Palampur for tea gardens, Pong Dam for migratory birds from November to March, and Shimla for Christmas on the Ridge. None of these depend on snow to be worth the trip.

**Is Jalori Pass open in winter?**
Often not. In winter 2024-25 the Aut-Luhri road over Jalori Pass was closed for 36 days, and fresh snow on 5 February 2025 closed it again, according to The Tribune. Jibhi and Tirthan can still be reached from the Aut side, but do not plan to cross Jalori in mid-winter.

**How many days do I need for Himachal in winter?**
Three days covers one base such as Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj or Shimla. Five days lets you add Bir and Dalhousie, or Manali. Seven days allows a loop from Delhi through Dharamshala, Bir and Manali with a buffer day for snow closures. Keep to one long drive per day and finish in daylight.
