**Short answer:** **Chamunda Devi temple** (officially **Shri Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham**) is at **Padar (Dadh) village on the Baner river**, about **15 km from Dharamshala** on the Dharamshala to Palampur road, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by taxi. The Ministry of Tourism lists it open **6 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 9 pm**; the Kangra district website says generally **6 am to 7 or 8 pm**, so go in the morning to be safe. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, and expect long queues during **Navratri**.

Chamunda is the closest of the great Kangra devi temples to Dharamshala and the first stop on most temple circuits. It honours both Shakti, as the goddess Chamunda, and Shiva, as Nandikeshwar. This guide gives the facts we could check on 2 November 2026 and says plainly where official sources disagree.

## Where is Chamunda Devi temple and how far is it from Dharamshala?

The temple stands beside the **Baner river** at **Padar (Dadh)**, right on the main road from Dharamshala to Palampur. Wikipedia gives its coordinates as 32°8′54″N 76°25′9″E. The Dhauladhar range rises behind it, and on a clear winter morning the snow line looks very close.

| From | Distance (approx.) | Drive time (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Dharamshala (Kotwali Bazaar) | 15 km | 30 to 40 minutes |
| McLeod Ganj | 24 km | About 1 hour |
| Norbulingka Institute, Sidhbari | On the way from Dharamshala | Short detour |
| Kangra town | 10 km | 25 to 30 minutes |
| Palampur | 19 km | 40 to 45 minutes |
| Gaggal (Kangra) Airport | 25 km | 45 minutes |

Distances are from the Kangra district website and Wikipedia; drive times are our estimates for normal traffic.

## What are the Chamunda Devi temple timings and aarti times?

**Two official sources give different hours.** Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism site, lists **6 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 9 pm**, which suggests a one-hour midday break. The Kangra district website (updated 19 December 2025) says the temple is **generally open 6 am to 7 or 8 pm**.

**Aarti:** the temple holds morning and evening aarti, but we found **no official published aarti times**. Travel sites quote times from 5:30 am to 8 am for the morning and 6 pm to 8 pm for the evening, and they contradict each other, so we do not repeat them as fact. Since November 2021 the aarti at Chamunda, Jwalamukhi and Brajeshwari has been telecast live on a TV channel (The Tribune, 5 November 2021).

**Our advice:** arrive between 7 am and 11 am, or before 6 pm in winter. Ask at the temple office for the day’s aarti time.

## What is the legend and history of Chamunda Devi?

**The name.** According to the Devi Mahatmya, as the district website retells it, the goddess Kaushiki created a fierce warrior, Chandika, who killed the demon generals **Chanda and Munda**. The goddess then gave her the title **Chamunda**. Incredible India tells the same story with Kali as the slayer, and says the battle was fought here.

**Why the temple is here.** Local legend says that in the **16th century** a king and a priest prayed to the goddess to move her shrine from a remote hilltop to a place pilgrims could reach. She appeared in the priest’s dream and showed where an ancient idol lay buried. It was dug up and installed at the present site. The hilltop is **Adi Himani Chamunda**, high on the ridge above (district website; Wikipedia).

**Age.** The district website says the present temple is roughly **400 to 700 years old**; Wikipedia and Incredible India say about 400 years. No source gives a firm date.

**Is it a Shaktipeeth?** Locally it is treated as one. Wikipedia notes that it is not on the classic lists of 51 or 52 Shaktipeeths in the Puranas, but is grouped with **Jwalamukhi, Brajeshwari, Chintpurni and Naina Devi** as the five major Shakti temples of Himachal.

## What can you see at the temple?

- **The main shrine:** the idol of the goddess is usually draped in red cloth (district website).
- **Nandikeshwar Mahadev:** behind the main temple a marble staircase leads down to a natural cave-like hollow where Shiva is worshipped as a self-manifested lingam. This is the "Nandikeshwar" in the temple’s name.
- **The kund and the Baner river:** pilgrims often take a ritual dip in the sacred kund. Cremation rites are performed on the riverbank near the temple, so be respectful with cameras there (district website).
- **The Dhauladhar view:** the riverside steps give one of the best low-level views of the range.

## Is there a dress code or rules at Chamunda temple?

**We found no published dress code or rule list** on the district or tourism pages. What is normal at Himachal devi temples, and what we advise:

- Remove footwear before the temple steps; there are places to leave shoes.
- Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. A scarf or cap to cover your head is welcome.
- Do not photograph inside the sanctum unless staff say it is allowed.
- Keep offerings simple; prasad shops line the approach.
- On Navratri days, follow the police queue system and keep children close.

## When is Chamunda Devi most crowded? Navratri 2027 dates

The district website names **Navratri** as the best time to visit for the festival atmosphere, and it is also when queues are longest. Weekends and Sundays are busy too.

| Festival | 2027 dates | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Chaitra Navratri | Wednesday 7 April to Thursday 15 April (Ram Navami) | Drik Panchang, New Delhi |
| Sharad Navratri | Thursday 30 September to Friday 8 October | Drik Panchang, New Delhi |

Local temple calendars can differ by a day. For reference, Sharad Navratri 2026 ran from 11 to 19 October 2026. For quiet darshan, go on a **weekday morning outside Navratri**.

## How do I reach Chamunda Devi from Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj?

| Mode | How | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Direct from your hotel, 30 to 40 minutes from Dharamshala | Easiest; lets you add Norbulingka or Palampur |
| Bus | Buses between Dharamshala and Palampur use this road; ask the conductor for Chamunda | We have not checked a current timetable or fare, or which services stop |
| Toy train | Kangra station is about 14 km away; finish by road | The line was partly restored on 11 October 2026; check NTES or 139 |
| Air | Gaggal (Kangra) Airport is about 25 km away | Good stop on an airport day |

**Taxi options.** For a single temple, ask for a quote on our [taxi page](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/taxi), or add Chamunda to a [Dharamshala to Palampur taxi](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/taxi/dharamshala-to-palampur-taxi), since it is on the way. For a full temple day, our [Four Devi Temples and Kangra Fort taxi tour](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/taxi/dharamshala-to-four-devi-temples-and-kangra-fort-tour-taxi) is a **fixed ₹6,000** (Alto, up to 4 passengers, about 220 km, fuel, tolls and parking included; offerings and meals are not).

## What is near Chamunda Devi temple?

![The Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar foothills around the Chamunda temple area](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/images/places/kangra-valley.jpg)

| Plan | Route | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Adi Himani Chamunda trek | Steep pilgrim climb from the Chamunda area to the original hilltop shrine | Fit walkers; see below |
| Norbulingka and Chamunda (half day) | Norbulingka Institute in Sidhbari, then Chamunda | First-time visitors |
| Palampur day | Chamunda, then tea gardens in Palampur | Families; see our [Palampur travel guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/palampur-travel-guide) |
| Devi temple circuit | Chamunda, Brajeshwari, Kangra Fort, Jwalamukhi | Pilgrims; see our [Kangra devi temples guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/kangra-devi-temples-guide) |
| Heritage day | Chamunda, then [Kangra Fort](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/kangra-fort-guide) | History lovers |

**Adi Himani Chamunda trek.** The older shrine sits high on the Dhauladhar ridge above the temple. Incredible India puts it about 16 km uphill. It is a long, steep day hike of 7 to 9 hours for most people. The shrine is below 3,000 m, and as of 2 November 2026 no permission is needed for treks that stay below 3,000 m. Winter orders can change that: a **Kangra district order of 6 January 2026** required SP Kangra permission for Adi Himani Chamunda, Triund and Kareri, cancelled on weather alerts, so check again before a winter trek. Our guided [Adi Himani Chamunda trek](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/treks/adi-himani-chamunda-trek) includes transfers and a local guide, and you can browse all our [treks from Dharamshala](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/treks).

## Where should I stay to visit Chamunda Devi?

Most people visit as a short trip from **lower Dharamshala**, which is closer than McLeod Ganj and saves the 9 km road each way. If you are heading on to Palampur or Bir, stay in Dharamshala the night before and start at Chamunda at opening time. Browse [hotels in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels) or read [where to stay in Dharamshala](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/where-to-stay-in-dharamshala).

## FAQs

**What are Chamunda Devi temple timings?**
Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism site, lists Chamunda Devi open 6 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 9 pm. The Kangra district website says generally 6 am to 7 or 8 pm. Because the official sources differ, visit between 7 am and 11 am, or before 6 pm in winter.

**How far is Chamunda temple from Dharamshala?**
About 15 km by road on the Dharamshala to Palampur road, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by taxi from Kotwali Bazaar. From McLeod Ganj it is about 24 km, around an hour. The temple is about 10 km from Kangra town, 19 km from Palampur and 25 km from Gaggal (Kangra) Airport.

**What is the aarti time at Chamunda Devi temple?**
The temple holds a morning and an evening aarti, but no official aarti timetable is published and travel sites give conflicting times. Ask at the temple office on the day. The aarti is also telecast live on TV, a service started for Chamunda, Jwalamukhi and Brajeshwari in November 2021.

**Is Chamunda Devi a Shaktipeeth?**
Local tradition treats it as one, and it is counted among the five major Shakti temples of Himachal with Jwalamukhi, Brajeshwari, Chintpurni and Naina Devi. However, it is not on the classic Puranic lists of 51 or 52 Shaktipeeths, as Wikipedia and the Kangra district website both note.

**How do I go from McLeod Ganj to Chamunda Devi?**
The easiest way is a taxi, about 24 km and an hour each way. You can also go down to Dharamshala and take a bus on the Palampur road, asking the conductor for Chamunda, though we have not checked a current timetable. Dharamshala Stay also runs a Four Devi Temples and Kangra Fort day tour by taxi, with fixed fares from ₹6,000.

**What is Adi Himani Chamunda?**
Adi Himani Chamunda is the original hilltop shrine of the goddess, high on the Dhauladhar ridge above the main temple, reached by a long, steep pilgrim trek of about 7 to 9 hours for most people. As of 2 November 2026 no permission is needed, because the shrine is below 3,000 m, but winter orders such as the one of 6 January 2026 have required SP Kangra permission, so check again in winter.

**When is Chamunda Devi temple most crowded?**
During Navratri and on weekends. In 2027, Chaitra Navratri runs from 7 to 15 April and Sharad Navratri from 30 September to 8 October (Drik Panchang, New Delhi). For a calm visit, go on a weekday morning outside these dates.
