# Dharamshala in December & January: Snow, New Year & Winter Guide

> A winter trip to Dharamshala means snow on the Dhauladhar, Christmas celebrations, cosy cafes, and hotel discounts of 20 to 40 percent. Here is everything you need to know about visiting in December and January, including snowfall chances, what is open, and how to stay warm.

Winter in Dharamshala is a different world from the summer crowds. The Dhauladhar range is white, the air is bitingly clear, McLeod Ganj is quiet enough to hear monastery bells from the main road, and hotel prices drop 20 to 40 percent outside Christmas and New Year week. The trade-off is cold, especially at night. If you come prepared, December and January offer some of the most dramatic scenery and most peaceful days of the year.

## Weather: What to Expect

| Period | Day (approx.) | Night (approx.) | Snow chance at McLeod Ganj | Snow at Triund |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Dec | 10–16°C | 2–6°C | Low | Moderate |
| Late Dec | 6–12°C | 0–4°C | Moderate (1–2 spells typical) | High |
| Early Jan | 4–10°C | −2 to 3°C | Moderate to high | Very high |
| Late Jan | 5–12°C | −1 to 4°C | Moderate | High |

McLeod Ganj (about 2,000 m) typically gets 2 to 5 snowfall episodes per winter, concentrated in late December through February. Each spell usually lasts 1 to 3 days, leaving a few centimetres that melts within a day or two in town. **Triund** (about 2,850 m) and higher areas get substantially more snow and it sticks longer.

Lower Dharamshala (about 1,300 m) rarely gets snow. If it does, it is a once-in-a-few-years event and melts within hours.

Sunshine hours are shorter — expect sunset around 5:15 to 5:30 pm. Mornings are foggy on some days, clearing by 10 am. When the sky is clear, the winter light on the snow peaks is extraordinary for photography.

## Snowfall: Will You See Snow?

This is the question everyone asks. The honest answer:

- **At McLeod Ganj level (about 2,000 m):** You have roughly a 40 to 50 percent chance of seeing at least one snowfall episode during a week-long December or January visit. It is unpredictable. You might get a picture-perfect snow day, or you might get a week of sunshine with snow only on the peaks above.
- **At Triund (about 2,850 m):** Snow is almost certain from late December through February. The trail may be snow-covered and slippery. Camping may be restricted or inadvisable without winter gear.
- **On the Dhauladhar peaks:** White all winter. You will see snow-capped mountains from McLeod Ganj even if it does not snow in town.

## Christmas and New Year in Dharamshala

**Christmas** is low-key but charming. The colonial-era churches — **St. John in the Wilderness** in Forsythganj and the church near McLeod Ganj — hold services. Cafes in McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu put up lights and run special menus. It is a warm, communal feel rather than a commercial spectacle. Read our [Christmas and New Year guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-christmas-new-year) for specific events and church service timings.

**New Year** is the busiest winter week. McLeod Ganj fills up with visitors from Punjab and Delhi. Hotels charge a 50 to 100 percent premium for 30 and 31 December. Bonfires and parties run at several hotels and cafes. **Book well in advance** if you plan to be here for New Year — at least 3 to 4 weeks ahead. The rest of winter is easy to book on short notice.

## What Is Open and What Is Closed

| Attraction / Activity | December–January Status |

| Tibet Museum | Open |
| Norbulingka Institute | Open |
| Bhagsu Waterfall | Open (reduced flow) |
| Triund Trek | Usually open but snow-covered; may be restricted after heavy snowfall |
| Indrahar Pass Trek | Closed (deep snow) |
| Kareri Lake Trek | Closed or very difficult |
| Bir Billing Paragliding | Usually operational on clear days |
| HPCA Cricket Stadium | Open for visits; match schedule varies |
| Cafes and Restaurants | Most open; some smaller places in Dharamkot close for winter |
| [Kangra Toy Train](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/kangra-toy-train-guide) | Runs year-round |

## Hotel Prices and Heating

Winter is the low season (outside Christmas and New Year week). Expect:

- **Mid-range double room:** approximately ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 per night, down from ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 in summer
- **Budget room:** approximately ₹600 to ₹1,200
- **Christmas/New Year week:** add 50 to 100 percent to the above

**Heating matters.** Not all rooms come with heaters. Before booking, confirm:
- Room heater (electric or blower) included or available for a charge (typically ₹200 to ₹500 per night)
- 24-hour hot water (solar heaters may not suffice on cloudy winter days; electric geysers are more reliable)
- Extra blankets or electric blankets

## Road Conditions and Getting Here

Roads to Dharamshala are generally open all winter. However:

- **Black ice** can form on the road between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, especially on early mornings after a cold night. Drive slowly or take a taxi.
- **After heavy snowfall,** the McLeod Ganj road may be closed for a few hours until cleared. This is rare but happens 1 to 3 times per winter.
- **Fog** in the Punjab plains can delay overnight buses from Delhi by 1 to 3 hours. If flying to [Kangra Airport](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/kangra-airport-gaggal-guide), fog-related cancellations happen occasionally in January.

The safest winter travel approach: arrive by afternoon, do not drive the hill roads after dark, and keep a buffer day if you have a fixed return. ## Best Winter Activities

- **Snow photography** — When snow falls in McLeod Ganj, the prayer flags, monasteries and pine forests under white are unforgettable. The [photography guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/photography-spots-sunset-points-dharamshala) has the best vantage points.
- **Kangra Valley in winter sun** — While McLeod Ganj is cold, the lower valley around Kangra Fort and Palampur is pleasantly warm (15 to 20°C during the day). A perfect day trip to escape the chill. [Kangra guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/places-to-visit-in-kangra).
- **Tibetan butter tea and thukpa** — The right season for hot Tibetan comfort food. [Tibetan food guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/tibetan-food-mcleod-ganj).
- **Cafe hopping** — Settle into a window seat at a McLeod Ganj cafe with a view of snow-dusted rooftops. [Cafe guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/top-cafes-in-mcleod-ganj).
- **Meditation and yoga retreats** — Winter is the quietest and most introspective season. Tushita and other centres run sessions through winter. [Meditation and yoga guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/meditation-yoga-retreats-dharamshala).
- **Triund snow trek** — If trails are open and you have proper gear (waterproof boots, gaiters, trekking poles), a snowy Triund is spectacular. Do not attempt it after fresh heavy snowfall or without checking conditions locally. [Triund guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/triund-trek-complete-guide).

## What to Pack for Winter Dharamshala

| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Thermal inner layer (top and bottom) | Nights and mornings are genuinely cold |
| Down or insulated jacket | Essential for McLeod Ganj evenings |
| Warm hat, gloves, scarf | Wind chill on the ridge and at viewpoints |
| Waterproof boots or shoes | Snow, slush, and wet paths after snowfall |
| Sunglasses and sunscreen | Winter sun at altitude is strong; snow glare too |
| Lip balm and moisturiser | Air is very dry |
| Power bank | Batteries drain faster in cold |

If you plan to trek to Triund in snow, add gaiters, trekking poles, and a warm sleeping bag (comfort rating −5°C or lower). Full packing guidance in our [weather and packing guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-weather-what-to-pack).

## Is December or January Too Cold?

It depends on what you are used to. If you live in Delhi, Jaipur or Mumbai, yes, it will feel very cold, especially at night. But during the day, with sunshine and no wind, it is actually pleasant to walk around in a jacket. The cold is manageable if you:
- Stay in a room with a heater
- Dress in layers and carry a warm jacket everywhere
- Plan outdoor activities for the 10 am to 4 pm window when the sun is out

The reward for braving the cold is Dharamshala at its most beautiful and least crowded.
