If you can pick only one window for Dharamshala, pick **October or November**. The monsoon retreats by late September, the dust washes off, and the Dhauladhar range stands out in the kind of razor-sharp detail you will not see in any other season. Temperatures are comfortable during the day, nights get pleasantly cool, hotel prices have not yet hit winter lows but are far below summer peaks, and the trekking season is at its absolute best.

This guide covers weather, crowd patterns, what to do, what to pack, and a suggested itinerary for each month, all based on our experience living here year-round. For the full twelve-month picture, see our [best time to visit Dharamshala guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-dharamshala).

## Weather: What to Expect

| Week | Daytime (approx.) | Night (approx.) | Rain | Sky | Snow |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Oct | 20–25°C | 10–14°C | Rare, occasional light shower | Mostly clear | None at McLeod Ganj level |
| Late Oct | 17–22°C | 8–12°C | Very rare | Clear, excellent visibility | Possible dusting above 3,500 m |
| Early Nov | 14–19°C | 5–9°C | Almost nil | Crystal clear | Light snow above 3,000 m some years |
| Late Nov | 10–16°C | 2–6°C | Nil | Clear to hazy on some days | Snow on Triund likely, Indrahar certain |

Post-monsoon air is the cleanest it gets all year. Sunrise and sunset light on the snow peaks is extraordinary, especially from [Naddi viewpoint and other photography spots](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/photography-spots-sunset-points-dharamshala).

Humidity drops sharply after September, so even 25°C feels comfortable rather than sticky. Nights in November can feel genuinely cold if you are coming from the plains, so bring a proper jacket. See our [weather and packing guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/dharamshala-weather-what-to-pack) for a full checklist.

## Why This Is the Best Season

**Views.** The Dhauladhar range is visible almost every day. In summer, haze and pre-monsoon clouds hide the peaks more often than not. In October and November, you get 25 to 28 clear-view days out of 30.

**Trekking.** This is the last trekking window before winter shuts the high trails. [Triund](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/triund-trek-complete-guide) is at its best: dry trail, warm days, cold but manageable nights for camping, and snow-capped peaks right in your face. The [Indrahar Pass](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/indrahar-pass-trek-guide) window usually closes by mid-November once snow builds up beyond the pass. [Kareri Lake](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/kareri-lake-trek-guide) and [Snowline / Laka Glacier](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/snowline-laka-glacier-trek) are also excellent.

**Festivals.** Diwali typically falls in October or early November. In McLeod Ganj, the celebration is quieter than on the plains but you get candles and diyas against the mountain backdrop. The international Dharamshala Film Festival (DIFF) has been held in November in past years. Check our [festivals and events calendar](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/festivals-events-calendar-dharamshala) for exact 2026 dates.

**Paragliding.** Bir Billing's post-monsoon flying season is excellent from October onward. Thermals are stable and visibility is superb. Read the [Bir Billing paragliding guide](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/bir-billing-paragliding-guide).

**Crowds.** October sees moderate tourist numbers, higher around Diwali week, but nothing like the May–June peak. November is genuinely uncrowded, especially after mid-month. You get the best of both worlds: good infrastructure still running, but space to breathe.

## Hotel Prices and Availability

October prices are roughly 10 to 20 percent above the lowest off-season rates (July–August monsoon), and about 30 to 40 percent below May–June peaks. November prices drop further, except around Diwali and DIFF if it runs.

A clean mid-range double in McLeod Ganj costs approximately ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 per night in October and ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 in November. Dharamkot and Bhagsu homestays can be even cheaper. Browse [our verified hotels](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/hotels) for current rates, or read [best hotels in McLeod Ganj](https://www.dharamshalastay.com/blog/best-hotels-in-mcleod-ganj).

**Booking tip:** Diwali week (and any long weekend around it) fills up fast. Book 2 to 3 weeks in advance for that window. The rest of October and all of November can usually be booked a few days ahead.

## What to Pack

**October:** Layers are key. Daytime is comfortable in a t-shirt or light shirt, but mornings and evenings need a fleece or light jacket. A compact rain jacket is wise for the rare leftover shower. Sunscreen is important because UV is strong at this altitude even when temperatures feel mild.

**November:** A proper warm jacket (down or insulated) for evenings and mornings. If you are trekking to Triund, thermals and a warm hat become necessary for the overnight. Comfortable walking shoes are fine for town; proper trekking shoes for any trail above Gallu Devi.

## FAQs

**Is October a good time to visit Dharamshala?**
October is widely considered the single best month to visit Dharamshala. The monsoon is over, skies are crystal clear, the Dhauladhar range is fully visible almost every day, temperatures are comfortable (15 to 25°C during the day), trekking trails are dry and open, and crowds are moderate. Hotel prices are reasonable except during Diwali week.

**Will it snow in Dharamshala in November?**
McLeod Ganj itself (about 2,000 m) very rarely gets snow in November. However, Triund (about 2,850 m) can receive light snow by late November, and the Dhauladhar peaks above 3,500 m usually have fresh snow from mid-November onward. If you want to see snow-capped mountains without walking in snow, November is ideal.

**What should I wear in Dharamshala in October and November?**
In October, layers work best: t-shirts or light shirts for the day, a fleece or light jacket for mornings and evenings. In November, upgrade to a proper warm jacket, especially for evenings. If trekking to Triund in November, carry thermals and a warm hat. Comfortable walking shoes are fine for town; proper trekking shoes for trails. Sunscreen is important at altitude in both months.

**Is Triund trek open in October and November?**
Triund is open and at its best in October: dry trail, clear skies, and comfortable temperatures. In November, the trek is usually still open but nights at the campsite are cold (around 0 to 5°C). By late November, snow can accumulate on the trail above Triund, and authorities may restrict camping. Check locally before going.
