Kunal Pathri is one of the quietest temples in the Dharamshala area: no big queues, tea bushes on all sides and the Dhauladhar above. This guide gives the facts we could check on 2 November 2026. Several details, including timings, are not published anywhere official, and we say so.

## Where is Kunal Pathri and how far is it from Kotwali Bazaar?

Kunal Pathri lies in the tea gardens south-west of **Kotwali Bazaar**, the main market of lower Dharamshala. Wikipedia lists it, with the Kangra Art Museum and the War Memorial, among the sights of the Kotwali Bazaar area. The Dharamshala Municipal Corporation (MC Dharamshala) gives the distance as **3 km on a level walk** from the bazaar.

| From | Distance (approx.) | Time (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Kotwali Bazaar, on foot | 3 km | 45 minutes to 1 hour |
| Kotwali Bazaar, by taxi | 3 km | 10 to 15 minutes |
| McLeod Ganj | About 12 km | 35 to 45 minutes by taxi |
| HPCA Stadium and War Memorial | A few km across lower Dharamshala | 10 to 15 minutes by taxi |

Times are our estimates. The last part of the road is narrow; after heavy rain, check with your driver that it is passable.

## What is the walk to Kunal Pathri like?

**Gentle and green.** From Kotwali Bazaar the route follows a small road and footpaths out through **tea bushes and patches of forest**, with views of the Dhauladhar on clear days. Indianetzone describes the setting as dense forest and tea gardens. It is one of the easiest outings in the area, and it stays shadier and cooler than the open walks around McLeod Ganj.

**Tips for the walk:**

- **Go in daylight.** The forest edges are quiet, and Indianetzone notes that wild animals, up to leopards, are occasionally seen. Do not walk back after dark.
- **Stay on the paths.** The tea gardens are working estates. Do not pick leaves, and ask before walking between the rows.
- **Drones:** ask the estate before flying one.
- **Shoes:** trainers are fine in dry weather; the path is muddy in the monsoon (July to September).
- **Water and toilets:** carry water. We could not confirm facilities at the temple.

## What is the legend of Kunal Pathri?

**The skull of Sati.** In the story of the Shaktipeeths, Shiva carried the body of Sati after her death, and Vishnu cut it apart with his Sudarshan chakra; the pieces fell at sacred sites across the subcontinent. Local belief holds that part of **Sati’s skull (kapal)** fell at Kunal Pathri, which is why the goddess is called **Kapaleshwari**, "goddess of the skull" (Indianetzone). Like Chamunda, it is treated locally as a Shaktipeeth, but we have not found it on the classic Puranic lists.

**The stone that stays wet.** The name comes from the **pathri** (stone). Inside the shrine is a stone shaped like a bowl or pot that is said to always hold water. Local legend says that when it begins to dry, rain follows (Indianetzone). Devotees take a little of the water home for worship.

**Age.** No source we read gives a reliable date for the temple.

## What are the Kunal Pathri temple timings?

**Not published.** We found no timings on the Kangra district, Himachal Tourism or MC Dharamshala pages, and the temple has no website we could find. Small village temples like this are usually open from morning to evening, so plan to arrive **between about 7 am and 5 pm**. Expect more people on Navratri days and Sundays.

**What to wear and do:** remove your shoes at the shrine, dress modestly, and ask before taking photos of the stone or the priest. These are our suggestions; no rules are published.

About 3 km. The Dharamshala Municipal Corporation describes it as a 3 km level walk from Kotwali Bazaar, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour at an easy pace. By taxi it is about 10 to 15 minutes. From McLeod Ganj it is about 12 km by road.

**What are Kunal Pathri temple timings?**
No official timings are published for Kunal Pathri. Like most small village temples it is open from morning to evening, so plan to visit in daylight, roughly between 7 am and 5 pm, and expect more visitors on Navratri days and Sundays.

**Why is it called Kunal Pathri?**
Pathri means stone. Inside the shrine is a bowl-shaped stone that is said to always hold water, and local legend says rain follows when it starts to dry. The goddess is Kapaleshwari, linked to the belief that part of Sati’s skull (kapal) fell here.

**Can you walk to Kunal Pathri through the tea gardens?**
Yes. The route from Kotwali Bazaar runs through tea gardens and patches of forest and is easy enough for children and most older visitors. Walk in daylight, stay on the paths, do not pick tea leaves, and expect mud in the monsoon months of July to September.

**Is Kunal Pathri a Shaktipeeth?**
