Overview
Minkiani Pass sits on the Dhauladhar crest above Kareri Lake, whose clear, shallow water is fed by snowmelt from the Minkiani area. The first two days are the classic Kareri Lake trek: from Kareri village along the Nyund stream through oak and pine forest to the meadow at Reoti, then up the bouldery upper valley to the lake and its small Shiva temple. From there the trail climbs steeply into rough, rocky terrain to a high camp below the pass, and summit day crosses boulder fields and, early in the season, old snow to the pass itself. This is a much harder, high-altitude trek than Kareri Lake and needs an experienced guide and proper gear. Our standard trip goes to the pass and returns to Kareri village, with buffer for weather; a crossing to the Chamba side can be arranged on request. The Kareri route passes through Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary forest land, where a forest permit has generally been required, and in January 2026 the Kangra DDMA banned trekking above 3,000 m and routed permission for Kareri through the Superintendent of Police, Kangra. We could not confirm whether that order has been relaxed, so we run this trek only when it is permitted and confirm before taking payment. Altitude figures for the pass vary between sources.
Itinerary

Drive 1-1.5 hours via Ghera to the roadhead near Kareri village (approx. 1,800 m). Trek along the Nyund stream over log bridges through mixed forest to the Reoti meadow (approx. 6 km, 4-5 hours). Camp.
Day 2: Reoti to Kareri Lake
Climb over boulders along the stream, with stone-paved sections and a steeper last stretch, to Kareri Lake (approx. 7 km, 3.5-5 hours). Camp on the grassy flats by the lake. Afternoon rest for acclimatisation.
Day 3: Kareri Lake to high camp below Minkiani
Steep climb on rough, rocky ground above the lake to a high camp below the pass. Short day for acclimatisation; early dinner and briefing for summit day.
Day 4: Summit day: Minkiani Pass and back to Kareri Lake
Pre-dawn start over boulder fields and possible snow to Minkiani Pass, views over the Dhauladhar towards the Chamba side, then descend before the afternoon cloud. Strict turn-around time. Overnight at Kareri Lake.
Day 5: Kareri Lake to Kareri village and Dharamshala
Long descent past Reoti to Kareri village (5-7 hours) and drive back to Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj by evening.
