20 Best Things to Do in McLeod Ganj (2026): Experiences Locals Recommend
Walk the kora with Tibetan grandmothers, learn to fold momos, sit a meditation course, hike to Triund and spend an hour helping Tibetans practise English. The best things to do in McLeod Ganj, beyond the checklist.

The best things to do in McLeod Ganj are experiences rather than sights: walking the kora at dawn, joining monks and pilgrims at the Dalai Lama Temple, taking a Tibetan cooking class, sitting an introductory meditation course in Dharamkot, hiking to Triund, and spending an afternoon in the cafes of Jogiwara Road. If you have a little more time, volunteer for an hour at an English conversation class for Tibetan refugees. It is one of the most rewarding things you can do here.
This guide lists 20 things to do in McLeodganj, with what each involves, approximate costs (as of 2026), how much time to give it, and honest notes on what is worth it. If you want a list of sights with entry fees instead, read our companion guide to the best places to visit in Dharamshala.
Tibetan culture and spirituality
1. Walk the Lingkhor kora at sunrise
The kora is a 30 to 45 minute loop around the Dalai Lama's residence and the Tsuglagkhang complex, through pine forest strung with prayer flags. Between 6 and 8 am it fills with Tibetans spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras. Walk clockwise, keep to the left of stupas and mani stones, and do not stop people for photos.
Cost: free. Time: 45 minutes. Tip: start on the path just to the left of the temple entrance (as you face it) on Temple Road.
2. Visit the Dalai Lama Temple and Tibet Museum
The Tsuglagkhang complex is the spiritual centre of the Tibetan exile community. Go in the morning for prayers, return in the afternoon if you want to catch monks debating in the courtyard, and give the Tibet Museum an hour. Full details on timings, etiquette and public teachings are in our Dalai Lama Temple guide.
Cost: free (museum free or token). Time: 2 to 3 hours.
3. Attend a public teaching (if one is scheduled)
When the Dalai Lama or senior lamas give public teachings at the main temple, thousands gather in the courtyard. Registration is required a few days in advance, and schedules change. Check the official schedule on dalailama.com before planning a trip around one.
Cost: nominal registration fee. Time: half a day per session.
4. Sit an introductory meditation or Buddhism course
Dharamkot, above McLeod Ganj, is home to Tushita Meditation Centre, which runs introductory Buddhist courses and drop-in sessions, and the Dhamma Sikhara Vipassana centre, which runs strict 10-day silent courses. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives at Gangchen Kyishong also runs Buddhist philosophy classes for visitors. Courses fill up, especially in spring and autumn, so book well ahead on their official websites.
Cost: donation-based or modest fees (varies). Time: a morning to 10 days.
5. Learn about Tibetan arts at Norbulingka
A 25 to 35 minute drive away at Sidhbari, Norbulingka Institute trains artists in thangka painting, woodcarving and metal statue making. Watching the painters at work is genuinely moving. Pair it with Gyuto Monastery nearby. Book a car through our taxi page if you do not want to deal with buses.
Cost: entry fee (approx. ₹50 for Indians, more for foreigners). Time: half day with travel.
6. Spin prayer wheels and add a prayer flag
Buy a set of prayer flags in the market (approx. ₹100 to ₹300 as of 2026) and hang them on the kora or a high point on a hike. Tibetans traditionally hang them on auspicious days. Ask a shopkeeper which day is good; they will usually be delighted to tell you.
Food and cafes
7. Take a Tibetan cooking class
Several small family kitchens in McLeod Ganj teach half-day classes covering momos, thenthuk (hand-pulled noodle soup) and Tibetan bread. You will fold momos badly at first and eat everything you make. Ask at your guesthouse or look for signs along Jogiwara Road and Bhagsu Road; class sizes are small, so book a day ahead.
Cost: approx. ₹500 to ₹1,200 per person (as of 2026). Time: 2 to 3 hours.
8. Eat your way through Tibetan food
Momos are only the beginning. Try thukpa, thenthuk, shapta (stir-fried meat), tingmo (steamed bread), laphing (cold spicy mung bean noodles sold from street stalls) and butter tea at least once. Our Tibetan food guide explains what to order.
9. Spend an afternoon cafe-hopping
McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu have a famous cafe culture: rooftop terraces with Dhauladhar views, bakeries with cinnamon rolls, and slow, laptop-friendly spaces. Our top cafes in McLeod Ganj guide has current picks. If you are working remotely, see the digital nomad guide.
Hiking and outdoors
10. Hike to Triund
The signature McLeod Ganj hike: around 9 km one way, about 1,000 m of climbing, and a ridge-top meadow facing the snow peaks. Start early, carry water, and check the current forest department fee and overnight camping rules before you go, as they change. Read the Triund trek complete guide or book a guided Triund trek.
Cost: forest fee plus food. Time: a full day.
11. Walk to Bhagsu waterfall and the cafes above it
From McLeod Ganj walk 2 km to Bhagsunag temple, then 20 to 30 minutes up to the waterfall. Keep climbing another 15 to 20 minutes to the hillside cafes above the fall, which are much quieter. Best on weekday mornings. See our Bhagsu guide.
Cost: free. Time: 2 to 4 hours.
12. Hike Dharamkot to Gallu Devi
A shorter, less crowded alternative to Triund: about 3 km uphill from Dharamkot through forest to Gallu Devi temple, with chai stalls and big views. Good for a half day, or as a warm-up the day before Triund.
13. Catch sunset at Naddi
Take a taxi or walk the road past Dal Lake to Naddi, 3 to 4 km away, for sunset over the Dhauladhar. Clear evenings from October to March are spectacular. More in our Naddi guide.
14. Go paragliding
Tandem flights operate from Indrunag above Dharamshala in season, and world-class flying is at Bir Billing, about 2 hours away. See paragliding options and our Bir Billing paragliding guide. Flights depend on weather and the official flying season; monsoon is closed.
15. Do a multi-day trek
From McLeod Ganj you can trek to Kareri Lake or over Indrahar Pass to Chamba. These need proper planning, a guide and good weather. Start with our treks page or the Kareri Lake trek guide.
Giving back
16. Volunteer at an English conversation class
Many Tibetan refugees, including former monks and recent arrivals, practise English in informal conversation classes run by local organisations. Lha Charitable Trust on Temple Road, one of the biggest volunteer hosts in town, runs daily conversation classes that drop-in volunteers can join, and other groups post notices in cafes. You just sit and talk for an hour. It is a real exchange: you will learn more about Tibet from these conversations than from any museum.
Cost: free. Time: 1 hour, usually in the afternoon.
Tip: listen more than you lecture, and be sensitive. Some participants have difficult stories and politics can be a painful subject.
17. Longer volunteering
If you are staying weeks rather than days, organisations in McLeod Ganj take volunteers for teaching, healthcare support and environmental projects. Apply through their official websites and be wary of anything that asks for large fees.
Shopping and evenings
18. Shop for Tibetan crafts
Temple Road and Jogiwara Road are lined with stalls selling singing bowls, thangkas, prayer flags, malas, Tibetan carpets, yak wool shawls and silver jewellery. Quality varies enormously; for genuine thangkas and handicrafts with fair prices, the shop at Norbulingka and the handicraft cooperatives are safer bets than random stalls. Bargain politely at street stalls, not in fixed-price shops.
19. Watch a film or talk on Tibet
Several cafes and organisations screen documentaries about Tibet in the evenings, and community talks are sometimes held for visitors. Look for posters around the main square and on noticeboards in cafes.
20. Watch the evening light from a rooftop
Simple, but one of the best things to do in McLeod Ganj: find a rooftop cafe facing the valley at around 5 pm (earlier in winter) and watch the lights come on in Dharamshala below.
Suggested 2-day plan
- Day 1 morning: kora at sunrise, breakfast, Dalai Lama Temple and Tibet Museum.
- Day 1 afternoon: cooking class or English conversation class, then rooftop cafe.
- Day 1 evening: walk or taxi to Naddi for sunset.
- Day 2: Triund hike (start by 8 am), or Bhagsu and Dharamkot if you prefer an easier day.
For a ready-made plan, see the Dharamshala weekend itinerary.
Practical tips
- Best time: March to June and late September to November for clear skies; monsoon (July to mid-September) is green but wet; winter is cold and very clear. See best time to visit.
- Getting there: McLeod Ganj is 9 km above Dharamshala; book a taxi from Kangra (Gaggal) airport or Pathankot station.
- Dress: modest clothing for temples and monasteries; layers year-round.
- Cash: carry some, as small kitchens and stalls may not take cards or UPI from foreign visitors.
