Best Hotels in Central McLeod Ganj

Upscale and "4-star style" stays

People often search for a "4 star hotel in McLeod Ganj". Few properties up here advertise an official star classification, so we would rather describe what you actually get. These are the options with full-service facilities, a proper restaurant and parking.

WelcomHeritage Natraj is one of the newer upscale hotels in town, run by the WelcomHeritage group (part of the ITC family of hotel brands). It has 32 rooms about 200 m from the Dalai Lama's residence, a temperature-controlled swimming pool, a library, a bar, an open terrace with Dhauladhar views and parking included, which matters a great deal in McLeod Ganj. The premium rooms and suites have private balconies. Best for: couples and families who want polish without giving up a walkable location.

The Belvedere Himalayan Retreat is a Leisure Hotels property about 100 m from Mall Road and 200 m from the temple complex. Read the room categories carefully: the entry-level deluxe and family rooms have no view, while the superior rooms (300 sq ft) and suites (752 sq ft) have balconies facing the Dhauladhar. Restaurant and bar on site. Best for: couples and small groups who want hotel comforts in the centre.

Fortune Park Moksha is not in McLeod Ganj proper but at Satobari near Dal Lake, about 5 km away. It is an ITC-group hotel with around 60 rooms, large balconies, a pool, spa, gym and lift, and breakfast is generally included. Best for: families and older travellers who want a calm, full-service base and do not mind taxis into town.

Glenmoor Cottages is a cluster of owner-run stone cottages in private deodar, oak and rhododendron forest above Mall Road, about 10-15 minutes' walk from the main square. Each cottage is an independent unit with a sitting area and kitchenette corner, and there are walking trails in the grounds. Some guests find meals and extras pricey, and the forest setting can feel damp in the monsoon. Best for: couples, families and birdwatchers who want privacy.

Mid-range with character

Chonor House is our pick for culture. It is run by the Norbulingka Institute, and every room is themed around a different aspect of Tibet, with hand-painted murals, carved furniture and woven rugs made by Norbulingka artisans. It is 3-5 minutes on foot from the Tsuglagkhang complex and the Tibet Museum, with a garden courtyard restaurant. Watch out for: a steep approach with steps.

HPTDC Hotel Bhagsu has been run by Himachal Tourism since 1978, which makes it one of the oldest established hotels in town. Unusually for McLeod Ganj, it has space: lawns, tall deodars, deluxe rooms, suites and separate huts on the grounds, plus a restaurant, bar and parking. About 5 minutes' walk from the main square. Best for: families, senior travellers and anyone who wants to park the car and forget it.

Hotel Tibet is a Tibetan-run hotel a 2-minute walk from the main square and the bus stand, with the well-known Tibet Restaurant on the ground floor. Rooms are older but roomy. Reviews are mixed on upkeep, so look at your room before settling in, but you cannot be more central. Best for: first-timers who value location and atmosphere over polish.

Budget picks

Green Hotel on Bhagsu Road is a long-running budget favourite: a little over twenty plain rooms, each with a balcony looking out over the valley, about 5 minutes from the main square. The in-house restaurant has been listed as under renovation, and some road-facing rooms pick up traffic noise, so ask for a room at the back.

Backpackers Inn McLeodganj on Jogiwara Road is, despite the name, a small guesthouse with private rooms, attached bathrooms, heating and balconies, about 500 m from the temple. The rooftop restaurant and helpful owners get warm mentions. Jogiwara Road is steep in places, so pack light.

Cosy Stays Near McLeod Ganj and the Triund Trailhead

If you are coming for the Triund trek, stay above McLeod Ganj. The trail starts at Gallu Devi temple above Dharamkot, and from there it is roughly 6-7 km to the Triund ridge at about 2,850 m, or around 9 km if you start from McLeod Ganj. Sleeping in Dharamkot or Upper Bhagsu lets you start at first light, skip the taxi and the steepest road section, and come back to a warm cafe rather than a traffic jam. These villages also have the cosiest small guesthouses in the area: a handful of rooms, a rooftop for breakfast and hosts who remember your name.

Dharamkot: closest to the trail

• Young Monk Hostel: high in Upper Dharamkot but still on a motorable road, about 20-25 minutes' walk from Gallu Devi. Private rooms and dorms across two wings, and a cafe with a wide view of the ridges.
• Shalom Backpackers Dharamkot: a calm Upper Dharamkot hostel opened in 2025, about 25 minutes from Gallu Devi, with balcony doubles, a garden cottage, a female-only dorm with ensuite and luggage storage for overnight treks.
• Eevolve Dharamkot: an eco-minded hostel in a conifer grove on Dharamkot Road with a well-liked cafe and a coworking space. Good for yoga students and remote workers.
• Mustard House - Travellers Homestay: a five-room homestay with a live-in host, home cooking and breakfast included, in a quiet corner of lower Dharamkot. A favourite of solo women and slow travellers.
• Mastiff Select Mandavya: on the Bhagsunag road below the village, with road access, breakfast included, a well-reviewed restaurant and a pet-friendly policy. The comfortable pick if hostels are not your style.
• Hyatt Regency Dharamshala Resort: the luxury option, in deodar forest at roughly 2,000 m, with villas, a heated pool and a spa. It is not walkable into cafe lanes, so expect short drives.

Upper Bhagsu: cafes, waterfall and the path to Dharamkot

Bhagsu is 2 km east of McLeod Ganj, with the Bhagsunag temple, the waterfall and a lively cafe scene. From Upper Bhagsu, a steep footpath of about 1.5 km (roughly 40 minutes) climbs to Dharamkot, and the walk from Dharamkot to Gallu Devi is about 2 km more. See our Bhagsu travel guide.

• White Rabbit Guest House: about half a dozen spotless rooms at the end of a quiet lane, run by a husband-and-wife team, with a rooftop breakfast that guests rave about. Cars cannot reach the door, so use paid parking nearby.
• Zostel Dharamkot: on the Upper Bhagsu slope towards Dharamkot, with balcony dorms and private rooms, a 24-hour reception, travel desk, free parking and power backup. Can be lively; light sleepers should book a private room.
• Loopin McLeodganj: a laid-back Upper Bhagsunag hostel with a guest kitchen, valley views and luggage storage for trekkers. The path towards Dharamkot starts nearby.

Prices and When to Book

Before You Book: McLeod Ganj Checklist

1. Can a taxi reach the door? Many guesthouses are down steep steps or along footpaths. With luggage, children or elders, ask first.
2. How many steps inside? Hillside buildings stack floors down the slope, and lifts are rare outside the bigger hotels.
3. Parking. If you are driving, confirm on-site parking. Weekend traffic in the centre can be slow, and parking near the square is limited.
4. Which way does the room face? The Dhauladhar is to the north. Valley-facing rooms look south over the plains, which is lovely at night but not snow peaks.
5. Heating and hot water. From November to March, check for heaters and ask how long the geyser takes. Hot water pressure can drop in peak season in older buildings.
6. Power backup. Short cuts happen in storms. If you work online, ask about an inverter for WiFi.
7. Noise. Rooms on the main square, Bhagsu Road and the busy Bhagsu lanes can be loud until late. Ask for the back of the building.
8. Food. Some hotels are pure vegetarian and some have no restaurant. In central McLeod Ganj that is fine; in Naddi or Upper Dharamkot it matters more.

Getting to Your Hotel
