Best Time to Visit Dharamshala in 2026: Month-by-Month Guide (Snow, Treks, Prices)

The Short Answer

The best time to visit Dharamshala is October to mid-November, when the post-monsoon air is the clearest of the year, days in McLeod Ganj sit around 20°C and the Triund trail is dry. March to June is the other great window, warmer and busier, with May-June the peak holiday season. For a chance of snow in McLeod Ganj, Naddi or Dharamkot, come in January or the first half of February; for the lowest prices, come in the July-August monsoon, accepting heavy rain and landslide risk.

There is no truly bad month: the town never shuts down, and the Dalai Lama Temple, monasteries and cafes stay open all year. What changes is the weather, the crowds and what you can do outdoors. Below is the full picture from our local team, month by month.

Dharamshala Seasons at a Glance

Remember the altitude split. Dharamshala town sits at about 1,457 m and McLeod Ganj about 400 m higher at roughly 1,800 m, so McLeod Ganj is usually 3-5°C cooler than the lower town, and Dharamkot and Naddi a little colder again. Not sure where to stay? Read Dharamshala vs McLeod Ganj.

October and November: Our Top Pick

The monsoon has washed the dust out of the air, so October and November give the sharpest Dhauladhar views of the year. Days are warm in the sun (about 20-22°C in McLeod Ganj in October), evenings need a fleece, and rain is rare: November averages only about 20 mm.

• October is busy. Festival long weekends around Navratri, Dussehra (20 October 2026) and Diwali push prices up, and the Dharamshala International Film Festival (29 October-1 November 2026) fills the town. Book early.
• November is our favourite month. After Diwali (8 November 2026), crowds thin, rates ease and the trails stay dry. Nights in McLeod Ganj drop to around 5-7°C, so bring a light down jacket.

This is prime time for the Triund trek, the flying season at Bir Billing and photography from Naddi. If you are reading this in October, early to mid-November is still very bookable.

December to February: Winter, Snow and the Festive Rush

Winter here means cold nights and mostly sunny days, with the Dhauladhar fully snow-covered. It is low season, except for one very busy fortnight.

When does it snow in Dharamshala?

Honest answer: lower Dharamshala almost never gets settled snow. McLeod Ganj, Naddi and Dharamkot get snow on some winter days, most often in January and the first half of February, usually after a western disturbance, but not every year, and often only a dusting that melts by noon. Snow in McLeod Ganj before late December is uncommon. For near-certain snow you need to go up: Triund (about 2,850 m) is reliably white from December to March.

Christmas and New Year

From about 23 December to 2 January, hotel rates typically rise 1.5 to 2.5 times, the McLeod Ganj road jams in the evenings and minimum stays of two or three nights are common. The worst crush is 24-26 December and 30 December-1 January. If you want this week, book by late October to mid-November, check for compulsory gala dinners and read cancellation terms carefully. The smart winter window

Come in the first half of January or early February: the New Year crowds are gone, snow odds are at their best, and mid-range rooms are often approx. 20-40% cheaper than in May or October. Ask your hotel about room heaters (some add approx. ₹300-500 a night) and 24-hour hot water before you book.

March to June: Spring and Summer

March is spring: rhododendrons bloom in the forests above McLeod Ganj, days warm to 17-19°C up the hill, and showers or hail are still common. Tibetan Uprising Day on 10 March brings a commemoration march from McLeod Ganj towards Dharamshala. April is excellent all-round: warm, mostly clear and not yet at peak prices.

May and June are peak season. While Delhi and Punjab sit at 40°C and above, McLeod Ganj stays around 25-27°C by day. The trade-off is crowds: weekend traffic jams in McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu, a busy Triund trail and the highest hotel rates outside the New Year week. Travel midweek and start early. July to September: Monsoon

Dharamshala is widely considered the wettest place in Himachal Pradesh, and July and August together average roughly 1,800 mm of rain. Expect days of continuous rain, cloud hiding the mountains, slippery trails and landslides that can block roads for hours. Paragliding at Bir is suspended from 15 July to 15 September, and treks like Triund and Kareri Lake are best avoided in heavy spells; the district sometimes closes them.

The upside: emerald hills, Bhagsu waterfall at full force, quiet streets and the year's lowest hotel rates. Dharamshala in July suits travellers who want cafes, monasteries and meditation rather than treks. Late September is the hidden gem: rain eases, the hills are still green and prices are low. Best Time For...

Snow trip tip: build one flexible day into your plan. The morning after a storm clears is the best moment to head up to Naddi or towards Triund. Book a guided Triund trek if you have not hiked it in winter before.

Booking Advice by Season

• Christmas-New Year: book by late October to mid-November. Good mid-range rooms are scarce by mid-December.
• May-June and October: book 3-6 weeks ahead, especially for weekends and for flights to Kangra, which use small aircraft and sell out quickly.
• Monsoon: book refundable rates and keep a buffer day for landslide delays.
• January-February: short notice is usually fine, but confirm heaters, hot water and power backup.
• Every season: weekdays are cheaper and calmer than Friday and Saturday nights.

• Winter, for snow: stay high, in McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot or Naddi, in a room with a heater.
• Winter, for comfort: lower Dharamshala is a few degrees warmer and easier by car.
• Summer: McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot or Naddi to stay cool; avoid the hot lower bazaar.
• Monsoon: central McLeod Ganj, where everything is walkable and you avoid slippery hillside steps.
• Autumn and spring: anywhere; Dharamkot is ideal for early Triund starts.
