Short answer: For likely snow in Himachal in winter, go high: Solang and the Atal Tunnel side of Manali, Narkanda, Kufri and Triund see snow far more often than the towns, and Spiti is snow-bound but reachable only via Kinnaur. For a winter trip that works with or without snow, Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, Bir, Palampur and Shimla stay open and lively. January and early February have given the best snow odds in recent years; December 2025 was dry across Himachal.

Which places in Himachal have the best chance of snow?

The higher you go, the better your odds, and the harder the roads.

  • Solang and the Atal Tunnel side of Manali. Higher than Manali town, so snow tends to come here earlier and stay longer. After fresh snow, police restrict traffic beyond Solang: on 2 January 2021 about 250 tourist vehicles were turned back (The Tribune). Rohtang Pass itself closes to traffic for the winter. Read Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel status and Manali in December and January.
  • Kufri and Narkanda, above Shimla. On 28 December 2020 Kufri had 30 cm and Narkanda 15 cm while Shimla had 9 cm (The Tribune). Narkanda runs ski courses from January to March when there is snow (Incredible India). See Shimla in December.
  • Triund, above McLeod Ganj. At about 2,850 m, the ridge holds snow roughly December to March, but a Kangra district order of 6 January 2026 restricted trekking above 3,000 m and made SP Kangra permission mandatory for Triund. Check the current position before you go: Triund trek guide and our guided Triund trek.
  • Naddi and Dharamkot. The likeliest places for snow on your doorstep in the Dharamshala area: on 23 and 24 January 2026, Dharamkot got about 3 inches and Naddi about 2 inches. See when it snows in Dharamshala.
  • Spiti. Snow is near-certain in mid-winter, but so are extremely cold nights; read Spiti Valley in winter before you consider it.

Where to go in Himachal in winter without snow?

Some of the best winter trips do not need snow at all.

Place by place: what to expect in winter 2026-27

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

Snow in lower Dharamshala is rare; upper areas (McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Naddi, Dharamkot) see snow on a few days between late December and February, mostly January. The highway via Kangra stays open, and Kangra Airport at Gaggal is 13 km from Dharamshala. Suits: first-timers, families, anyone who wants culture plus mountain views. Stay: hotels in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj; arrive with our Gaggal airport to McLeod Ganj taxi.

Naddi and Dharamkot

Quiet villages above McLeod Ganj at roughly 1,900 to 2,100 m, and the best bet in the area for snow outside your window. Roads can ice or block for a day after snow. Suits: couples and long-stayers. Guides: Naddi and Dal Lake, Dharamkot.

Triund (winter caution)

Snow-covered ridge, big views, real risk. Snow and ice on the upper trail make it a different trek from October’s. The January 2026 district order on treks above 3,000 m means permission and weather alerts matter. Suits: fit hikers with a local guide, never solo after snow.

Bir

Low snow odds, crisp clear days, and tandem flights when the weather allows. About 65 to 70 km from Dharamshala (2 to 2.5 hours). Suits: adventure seekers who want a winter activity that is not snow. Guide: Bir travel guide.

Palampur

About 35 to 40 km from Dharamshala. Tea gardens are dormant in winter but the Dhauladhar backdrop is at its whitest. Suits: slow travellers and families.

Dalhousie and Khajjiar

Regular snow between late December and February; the Dalhousie to Khajjiar stretch is the one most likely to close after heavy snow, sometimes for days. The Jot Pass shortcut is often closed or unsafe from roughly December to March. About 120 to 130 km from Dharamshala, 4 to 5 hours. Suits: families who want snow play within reach. Guide: Dalhousie and Khajjiar from Dharamshala.

Manali, Solang and Sissu

Manali town had no snow at Christmas 2025 and only got its first heavy snow around 23 January 2026; Solang and the Atal Tunnel side get snow earlier and more often. Plan a buffer day for closures beyond Solang. About 235 km from Dharamshala (7 to 8 hours). Suits: snow play and honeymooners who accept crowds. Guides: Manali in December and January, Dharamshala to Manali.

Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda

Shimla town’s first snow came after December in three of the last four winters; Kufri and Narkanda do better. Christmas on the Ridge and the ice rink (from early to mid-December in recent years) are the draws. Suits: Christmas and New Year trips, skiing in January to March when snow allows. Guides: Shimla in December, Shimla to Dharamshala.

Spiti (winter route via Kinnaur)

The Manali side is shut: the Keylong-Kaza road over Kunzum Pass "generally remains closed" from about October or November to June or July, according to the Lahaul-Spiti district administration, and in 2024 the Gramphu-Losar stretch was closed by order from 23 November. The winter way in is the Shimla-Kinnaur road, which the district calls an "almost all-weather" route: about 412 km and roughly 20 hours of driving from Shimla to Kaza, plus an overnight halt. Suits: experienced winter travellers with time, warm gear and a driver who knows the route. Guide: Spiti Valley in winter.

Kasol and Tosh

Kasol, in the Parvati Valley, is about 75 to 80 km from Manali via Bhuntar. Kasol itself rarely gets heavy snow; Tosh, higher up the valley, is likelier to. Suits: backpackers and slow travellers.

Jibhi and Tirthan

Wooden cabins and forest walks in the Banjar area. Jalori Pass, above Jibhi on NH-305, is the winter problem: in winter 2024-25 it was closed for 36 days, and fresh snow on 5 February 2025 shut it again (The Tribune, 9 February 2025). Jibhi is reachable from the Aut side; do not plan to cross Jalori in mid-winter. Suits: couples wanting a cabin and a fireplace.

Chail and Kasauli

Lower hill stations close to Chandigarh, good for a two or three night winter break. Do not plan a trip here around snow. Suits: short breaks from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab.

How should I plan a Himachal winter trip? 3, 5 and 7 day ideas

Short winter days and icy evening roads mean no more than one long drive per day, finished in daylight.

Winter safety and booking tips

  1. Book refundable rooms for snow trips; nobody can promise snow a month ahead.
  2. Keep a buffer day. Roads beyond Dhalli (Shimla), Solang (Manali) and Lakkar Mandi (Khajjiar) close after heavy snow.
  3. No driving after dark. Black ice forms on shaded bends in the evening and early morning.
  4. Use local drivers who know winter roads; most taxis do not carry chains.
  5. Check permissions for high treks in Kangra (Triund, Kareri) before you set off.
  6. Pack for minus temperatures in the upper areas: our what to pack guide.
  7. Check live updates before each drive: our travel updates page and the district administrations’ social media.
