Spiti Valley in Winter 2026-27: Route, Roads, Permits & Cold
Spiti Valley in winter 2026-27: the Manali to Kaza road over Kunzum Pass is shut by snow, so the only way in is the long Shimla, Kinnaur and Kaza route on NH-5 and NH-505. Road status, buses, 4x4 advice, permits for Indians and foreigners, the Kibber fee, real winter temperatures, frozen water, snow leopard season and how to get there from Dharamshala.

Short answer: In winter you can reach Spiti Valley only from the Shimla side, through Kinnaur on NH-5 and NH-505 (Shimla, Reckong Peo, Khab, Nako, Sumdo, Tabo, Kaza). The Manali side is shut: Kunzum Pass was closed to all vehicles on 15 October 2026 after heavy snow, and no reopening had been reported when we checked on 26 October. Indian citizens need no permit, but foreigners need an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur and Spiti border stretch. Expect night temperatures well below minus 10°C, frozen pipes and only a few homestays open, so go with a 4x4, a local driver and spare days.

Winter Spiti is beautiful and hard. The valley turns white, the river freezes at the edges, the tourist crowds vanish and the snow leopard season begins at Kibber. It is also a high, remote cold desert where one snowfall can close a road for days. This guide says what is confirmed for winter 2026-27 and what is not. It was checked against the Kinnaur district website, news reports and health guidance on 26 October 2026.

Is Spiti Valley open in winter?
Yes, from the Shimla and Kinnaur side only. The Kinnaur route is described as open all year apart from short closures for landslides or heavy snow (Wikipedia, Kaza). Kaza, Tabo, Key, Kibber and Langza are lived-in villages in winter; the high road over Kunzum Pass to Manali is not.
What closes in winter:
- Kunzum Pass and the Manali to Kaza road. On 15 October 2026 vehicles were barred from Kunzum, Shinku La and Baralacha La because of continuous snow. The Gramphu to Batal stretch of the Sumdo-Kaza-Gramphu highway was also shut, while the Sumdo to Batal section stayed open (The Tribune, 15 October 2026). The Lahaul-Spiti police asked travellers to avoid unnecessary trips to high areas.
- Chandratal and the higher routes, which close for the season (Outlook Traveller, October 2025).
What usually stays reachable: Kaza, Key, Kibber, Langza, Tabo and Dhankar, with access to Kungri in Pin Valley varying with snowfall (Outlook Traveller).
When does the Manali-Kaza road close for winter?
There is no fixed date: the first heavy snow at Kunzum decides it. Here is what the record shows:
| Year | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | The Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul and Spiti formally closed the Gramphu to Losar stretch via Kunzum from 23 November 2024 until the next summer, under the Disaster Management Act; travellers were told to use the Kinnaur route | The Tribune, 23 Nov 2024 |
| 2025 | Snow shut the road on 6 October; it was then reopened for light 4x4 vehicles only, weather permitting | The Tribune, 14 Oct 2025 |
| 2026 | Kunzum closed to all vehicles on 15 October; no timeline to reopen | The Tribune and The North News, 15 Oct 2026 |
What we do not know yet (26 October 2026): whether Kunzum will reopen briefly this autumn, as it did in 2025, and the date of a formal winter closure order for 2026-27. We had not seen one. Do not plan a winter trip that depends on crossing Kunzum. The NH-505 route data notes the Kaza to Gramphu section is often closed for 6 to 9 months a year.

How do I get to Spiti in winter from Dharamshala?
Go to Shimla first, then take the Kinnaur route. There is no winter shortcut from the Kangra side.
| Leg | How | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Dharamshala to Shimla | Taxi or HRTC bus | See our Shimla to Dharamshala guide for routes and times (same road in reverse) |
| Shimla to Reckong Peo or Kalpa | Car or HRTC bus along NH-5 and the Sutlej | A long day. Sleep here to break the journey and the climb |
| Reckong Peo to Kaza | Car or HRTC bus via Khab, Nako, Sumdo and Tabo (NH-505) | Foreigners need the Inner Line Permit before this stretch |
Buses. HRTC runs buses on the Kinnaur route, and travel guides describe the usual plan as Shimla to Reckong Peo, then an early bus from Reckong Peo to Kaza. We could not check a current winter timetable: the HRTC website did not load for us, and the timings we found online disagree. Ask at the Shimla or Reckong Peo bus stand the day before, and expect cancellations after snowfall.
Taxi. For the Dharamshala to Shimla leg or a full trip, ask us for a quote: book a taxi. For the Spiti stretch itself, hire a 4x4 with a local driver who drives these roads in winter (Outlook Traveller gives the same advice).
Is the Kinnaur road safe in winter?
It is open, but snow and ice cause real disruptions. Snow can close the road for a day or more, and icy stretches are common at height. On 30 March 2024, for example, an HRTC bus skidded on snow and turned over near Maling in Kinnaur; no one was hurt (PTI via ETV Bharat). Kinnaur is also known for rockfall and landslides.
Practical rules for the drive:
- Do not self-drive a plains car. Use a 4x4 with snow chains and a driver from Kinnaur or Spiti.
- Drive in daylight only. Ice is worst in the early morning and after dark.
- Keep two or three spare days. A blocked road means waiting, not detouring.
- Fill up and carry cash at Reckong Peo. Do not count on finding fuel, a working ATM or card payments further on.
- Check the latest status with the district administration or police before each leg.
Do I need a permit for Spiti in winter?
Indian citizens: no permit. The Kinnaur district website addresses permits only for foreigners, and says everyone moving in the notified border area must carry a valid identity card. Carry your Aadhaar, passport or driving licence and show it at checkposts.
Foreigners: yes, an Inner Line Permit. The Kinnaur district website says the area between the Inner Line and the international border is a protected area, and foreigners cannot enter or stay there without a permit. On the winter route that covers:
| Area | Places named on the official list |
|---|---|
| Pooh block, Kinnaur | Nako, Khab, Maling, Chango, Leo, Pooh, Shalkhar, Sumra and others |
| Spiti sub-division | Dhankar, Shichling, Poh, Tabo, Hurling, Lari, Gue, C.P. Samdo (Sumdo) and Korik |
What the official page says about the permit:
- Fee: Rs 200 per person at an e-governance centre; travel agency charges are extra.
- The rule is written for groups of two or more, sponsored by a recognised Indian travel agency, with a fixed itinerary; the listed places can be visited for up to 30 days.
- Kaza is listed as open to foreigners without a protected area permit, but you cannot reach it in winter without crossing the permit area.
- Military sites are out of bounds and must not be photographed.
- District Tourism Officer, Kinnaur: 01786-222253 (SDM office, Kalpa, Reckong Peo).
The page was last updated in July 2023, and travel blogs give conflicting fees and group-size rules. Treat the official page as the baseline and confirm with the Reckong Peo office before you go.
Two other rules that apply to everyone:
- Kibber, Pin Valley and Chandratal fee. In June 2025 the forest department started charging Rs 150 a day per Indian and Rs 500 per foreigner to enter these eco-sensitive areas, following High Court directions, with separate charges for filming and tents (The Tribune, 10 June 2025). We have not seen an update since; check at Kaza.
- Trek registration. Since June 2026 the Lahaul-Spiti District Disaster Management Authority makes prior registration and permission compulsory for all trekking in the district, with a check-out when you return (The Tribune, June 2026).
How cold is Spiti in winter?
Very cold. Tabo, on the winter route, is often the coldest weather station in Himachal: it fell to minus 10.8°C on the night of 5 January 2026, and that week PTI reported frozen water pipes in the mid and higher hills (PTI, 6 January 2026). Outlook Traveller says winter nights in Spiti reach minus 20°C and can drop to minus 30°C.
What that means on the ground:
- Water freezes. Pipes and taps freeze. Ask your homestay how they manage water, toilets and hot water in winter before you book.
- Most hotels close. Outlook Traveller says many hotels and guesthouses shut in the off-season; some homestays stay open, mainly in Kaza, Langza and Kibber.
- Ask about heating. Check what heats your room and what happens in a power cut after snow.
- Plan for patchy signal. Leave your route and dates with family before you lose network.
Can I see a snow leopard in Spiti in winter?
You can try, with a good spotter and patience. Kibber is the base. According to the Snow Leopard Trust (July 2026), roughly 350 to 550 people come to Kibber each winter mainly to see snow leopards, mostly from December to February, and the village has 13 active homestays and 25 local wildlife spotters. The study behind that report, by the Nature Conservation Foundation and Snow Leopard Trust, recommends visitor briefings and warns against baiting.

Sightings are never guaranteed. Book a homestay that works with local spotters, stay several nights, stay off fields and pasture, take your litter back, and pay the Kibber entry fee.
Is altitude sickness a risk in winter Spiti?
Yes. Kaza is about 3,650 m, and Kibber and Langza are higher. Cold makes acute mountain sickness (AMS) feel worse. The US CDC advises that above 3,000 m you raise your sleeping altitude by no more than 500 m a day, with an extra night for every 1,000 m gained.
- The main symptom is headache, often with nausea, tiredness, dizziness or loss of appetite, starting 2 to 12 hours after arrival.
- Rest at the same height until you feel better; go down if symptoms get worse. Breathlessness at rest or confusion is an emergency: descend at once.
- Avoid alcohol, drink water, and talk to your doctor about medicine before the trip.
The slow Kinnaur route helps: a night at Reckong Peo or Kalpa and another at Nako or Tabo before Kaza. Read our health and medical help guide for hospitals in Dharamshala before you set out.
What should I pack for Spiti in winter?
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Down jacket, thermals (two sets), fleece, windproof shell | Nights well below minus 10°C |
| Snow boots with grip, woollen socks, gloves, cap, buff | Ice on paths and roads |
| Sunglasses and sunscreen | Strong sun on snow at altitude |
| Thermos, water bottle with cover | Taps freeze; keep water from freezing |
| Power bank, torch, spare batteries | Cold drains batteries; power cuts after snow |
| Cash | Do not count on ATMs or card payments |
| Photo ID (and Inner Line Permit for foreigners) | Checkposts on the Kinnaur route |
| Basic medicines, lip balm, moisturiser | Dry air and long distances to help |
Our Dharamshala weather and packing guide covers the lower-altitude part of the trip.
Is winter Spiti right for you?
| Go if | Skip it if |
|---|---|
| You have 8 to 10 days and can wait out a blocked road | You have a fixed return flight two days after Kaza |
| You are happy with dry toilets, one warm room and simple food | You need hot showers and a heated room |
| You want snow leopards, frozen landscapes and empty monasteries | You have heart or lung problems your doctor has not cleared for altitude |
If you want snow without the risk, the Dhauladhar gives you plenty closer to home: see Dharamshala in December and January, snowfall in Dharamshala and our list of the best places to visit in Himachal in winter.
