Dharamshala to Manali: Distance, Best Routes & Transport (2026)
Three ways to get from Dharamshala to Manali by bus, taxi or self-drive, with real drive times, costs, scenic detours through Bir and Palampur, and tips for breaking the long mountain journey.

Dharamshala to Manali is roughly 230 to 250 km by the direct route and takes about 7 to 9 hours of driving. There is no direct flight or rail link between the two, so the road through the Kangra and Kullu valleys is the only practical option. The journey is long but crosses some of the most beautiful country in Himachal — tea gardens, ancient temples, river gorges, and apple orchards.
We send guests on this route regularly, and the advice below is based on real travel times, not optimistic Google Maps estimates. For a complete multi-destination Himachal trip, see our Delhi-Dharamshala-Bir-Manali itinerary.
Three Routes Compared
| Route | Distance (approx.) | Drive time (approx.) | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Palampur, Baijnath & Mandi | 230–250 km | 7–9 hrs | Most common; tea gardens, ancient temples |
| Via Jogindernagar & Mandi | 240–260 km | 7.5–9.5 hrs | Passes through the narrow-gauge rail country |
| Via Bir (detour) | 260–280 km | 8–10 hrs | Adds a stop at Bir Billing; the best option if you have time |
All three routes converge at Mandi, the junction town of Himachal, and then follow the same Mandi–Kullu–Manali highway for the last 110 to 120 km.
Route 1: Via Palampur, Baijnath and Mandi (Standard)
From Dharamshala, drive south to Palampur (about 35 km, 1 to 1.5 hours) through the Kangra Valley tea country. Continue to Baijnath (ancient Shiva temple, right on the road, worth a 10-minute stop), then through Jogindernagar and down to Mandi (about 150 km from Dharamshala, 4 to 5 hours). From Mandi, it is the standard Mandi–Aut–Kullu–Manali highway (about 110 km, 3 to 4 hours).
This is the most straightforward route and the one HRTC buses follow.
Route 2: Via Jogindernagar and Mandi
A minor variant that takes the lower road through Nagrota Surian and Jogindernagar, skirting the northern shore of the Pong reservoir area. The distance and timing are similar. Interesting if you want to see the small-gauge railway infrastructure around Jogindernagar.
Route 3: Via Bir (Recommended If You Have Time)
Instead of driving straight through, detour to Bir (about 65 to 70 km from Dharamshala, 2 to 2.5 hours). Spend a few hours or a night at the paragliding and monastery town, then continue from Bir to Mandi (about 120 km, 3.5 to 4 hours) and on to Manali. This adds about 30 km and 1 to 2 hours to the total but lets you experience one of Himachal's best small towns. Read our Bir travel guide for what to see and do.
By Bus
Direct HRTC Buses
HRTC runs 1 to 3 direct buses from Dharamshala to Manali daily. These leave from the Dharamshala bus stand (lower Dharamshala, near the main market).
| Type | Fare (approx.) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary | ₹400–550 | 9–11 hrs |
| Semi-deluxe | ₹600–800 | 8–10 hrs |
The earliest bus usually departs around 5 to 6 am and arrives in Manali by 3 to 5 pm. This is the one to take — later departures arrive after dark, and the Mandi-to-Manali stretch is not fun in the dark.
Connecting via Mandi
If the direct bus timing does not suit you, take any Dharamshala-to-Mandi bus (several run daily, about 4 to 5 hours, ₹200 to ₹300) and then catch a Mandi-to-Manali bus from the Mandi bus stand. Mandi is a major hub, and buses to Manali leave every 30 to 60 minutes. The connecting route gives you flexibility and a chance to stretch your legs in Mandi.
By Taxi
A one-way taxi from Dharamshala to Manali costs approx. ₹5,000 to ₹8,000 for a sedan (Dzire, Etios) and ₹7,000 to ₹10,000 for an SUV (Innova) as of 2026. The drive takes 7 to 8 hours with stops.
The taxi makes the journey significantly more comfortable because you can:
- Stop at Palampur for tea garden views (read our Palampur guide)
- Step out at Baijnath temple without worrying about the bus leaving
- Break for lunch in Mandi at a good restaurant instead of the bus stand dhaba
- Detour through Bir without juggling bus schedules
If you are a group of 3 to 4, the cost per person is comparable to a semi-deluxe bus ticket, and you save 1 to 2 hours. Book a taxi through us or arrange one at the McLeod Ganj taxi stand.
Self-Drive Tips
- Start by 6 to 7 am. The Mandi-to-Manali stretch can jam up on weekends and holidays, especially around the Aut tunnel and Kullu town.
- Fuel up in Dharamshala or Palampur. The next reliable fuel stations are in Jogindernagar and then Mandi.
- The Mandi bypass is essential. Do not drive through Mandi town — take the bypass road towards Pandoh/Kullu. The old route through the market can cost you 30 to 60 minutes in traffic.
- Aut to Kullu is being widened. In 2026 there are still construction zones between Aut and Kullu that can cause 30 to 60 minute delays. Check road conditions on the day.
- Parking in Manali: If you are staying in Old Manali, check with your hotel about parking before driving in. The lanes are narrow and most hotels have limited spots.
Breaking the Journey
We strongly recommend breaking this drive if you are not in a hurry:
- Stay a night in Bir (2 to 2.5 hours from Dharamshala): Paragliding, monasteries, Tibetan colony, and a peaceful evening. Continue to Manali next morning refreshed.
- Stay a night in Mandi (4 to 5 hours from Dharamshala): Budget hotels near the bus stand. Visit Rewalsar lake (30 km detour) in the evening.
- Stay a night in Barot Valley (detour from Jogindernagar, about 3 hours from Dharamshala): A hidden gem. Read our Barot Valley guide for details.
Breaking the journey makes the trip one of the highlights of your Himachal vacation instead of a gruelling transfer.
The Road: What to Expect
| Section | Distance | Condition | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dharamshala → Palampur | 35 km | Good state highway | Sharp turns around Chambi |
| Palampur → Mandi | 115 km | Mixed; mostly good | Slow behind trucks near Jogindernagar |
| Mandi → Kullu (via Aut tunnel) | 80 km | Under widening in parts | Construction delays, one-lane stretches |
| Kullu → Manali | 40 km | Decent highway | Weekend traffic jams in Kullu town |
During monsoon (July to September), landslides can occur on any section but are most common between Mandi and Aut. Always check local road conditions before starting.
