The Short Answer

The fastest way to reach Dharamshala is to fly into Kangra Airport at Gaggal (airport code DHM), about 12-15 km from Dharamshala town and roughly 20 km from McLeod Ganj. The cheapest and most popular way, especially from Delhi, is an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi that drops you in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj in the morning. There is no broad-gauge railway station in Dharamshala itself, so train travellers usually ride to Pathankot and finish the last 85-90 km by road.

Which option is best depends on where you start, how much time you have and your budget. Below we break down every route the way a local would explain it, with approx. costs as of 2026, then answer the question most people forget to ask: how do you get from Dharamshala up to McLeod Ganj?

By Air: Kangra Airport (Gaggal)

Kangra Airport is a small single-runway domestic airport at Gaggal, on the Dharamshala-Pathankot highway. Its runway is short, so it handles turboprop aircraft rather than big jets, which means limited seats and fares that jump close to travel dates. An expansion to lengthen the runway has been planned for years; until it is complete, expect only a handful of flights a day.

Which airlines fly to Kangra? As of 2026, IndiGo operates the main scheduled services, with routes listed to Delhi, Chandigarh, Noida and Jaipur, and Alliance Air has operated a regional link with Shimla. SpiceJet has flown the Delhi route in previous years. Schedules on this airport change more often than at big airports, so always check the airline websites directly before you plan around a flight.

Tips for flying in:

  • Book early. With small planes, the cheapest fares on Delhi-Kangra disappear fast, especially in May-June, October and around Christmas and New Year.
  • Mornings are more reliable. Afternoon flights are more likely to be delayed or diverted by cloud over the Dhauladhar, particularly in the monsoon (July-August).
  • Weight limits can be strict on turboprops. Check the cabin and check-in baggage allowance on your ticket.
  • From the airport, a pre-arranged or prepaid taxi to Dharamshala town costs approx. ₹800-1,200 and to McLeod Ganj approx. ₹1,000-1,500 (30-60 minutes). Local buses run on the main road outside the airport if you are travelling light. You can also book an airport transfer with us.

From Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata or the south: there are no direct flights. Fly to Delhi or Chandigarh and connect to Kangra (leave at least 3 hours between flights if they are on separate tickets), or fly to Chandigarh or Amritsar and take a taxi or bus for the final 5-6 hours. Many travellers from Mumbai and Bangalore find it easiest to land in Delhi in the evening and take the overnight Volvo, saving a hotel night.

By Bus: Delhi to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

The overnight bus is the classic way to reach Dharamshala. You leave Delhi in the evening and wake up to pine forests and snow peaks.

HRTC Volvo from ISBT Kashmere Gate

Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) runs government buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate in Delhi to Dharamshala, including air-conditioned Volvo/Scania services (sold under the Himsuta name), cheaper non-AC deluxe buses and ordinary buses. Approx. fares as of 2026:

  • AC Volvo/Scania: from approx. ₹1,400-1,600
  • Non-AC deluxe: approx. ₹900-1,000
  • Ordinary: approx. ₹700-750

Book on the HRTC website or app, or at the HRTC counter inside Kashmere Gate. Most Volvo departures leave in the evening and reach Dharamshala early the next morning, a journey of roughly 10-12 hours. Some services continue to McLeod Ganj; check the destination when booking.

Private Volvos from Majnu ka Tilla

Majnu ka Tilla, Delhi's Tibetan colony in north Delhi, is the traditional departure point for private overnight buses straight to McLeod Ganj. Several Tibetan-run and other private operators sell tickets from small offices around the colony, and the same buses are listed on the big bus-booking apps. Fares usually run approx. ₹1,200-2,000 depending on season and seat type (seater, semi-sleeper or sleeper). The big advantage is the drop point: many private buses go all the way to McLeod Ganj bus stand, so you avoid the extra transfer.

Bus tips from locals:

  • Carry a warm layer even in summer; AC buses are cold at night.
  • The road above Kangra has many bends. Sit near the front and skip a heavy dinner if you get motion sickness.
  • Buses often reach between 5 and 7 am. If your hotel check-in is at noon, ask for an early check-in or plan breakfast at a cafe first.

By Train: Pathankot, Chakki Bank and Una

Dharamshala has no mainline railway station. Your realistic rail options are:

  1. Pathankot Cantt or Chakki Bank: the nearest broad-gauge stations, about 85-90 km from Dharamshala. Many overnight trains from Delhi heading for Jammu stop at Pathankot Cantt or Chakki Bank, arriving early morning. From there, a taxi to Dharamshala takes about 2.5-3 hours and costs approx. ₹2,500-3,500; HRTC buses from Pathankot bus stand cost approx. ₹150-250 and take 3.5-4 hours.
  2. Amb Andaura (Una): the New Delhi-Amb Andaura Vande Bharat Express gets you from Delhi to Una district by late morning. From Amb Andaura it is roughly 3-3.5 hours by taxi to Dharamshala via Kangra. A good option if you want a daytime train.
  3. Kangra Valley Railway (toy train): the narrow-gauge line from Pathankot to Jogindernagar passes through Kangra, but services have been repeatedly suspended by monsoon damage in recent years. Treat it as a scenic experience, not as your main transport, and check the current status before relying on it.

By Road: Self-Drive and Taxi

Self-drive from Delhi

Delhi to Dharamshala is roughly 475-500 km depending on the route. The common route is Delhi - Panipat - Ambala - Chandigarh (or Ludhiana) - Anandpur Sahib or Una - Kangra - Dharamshala, about 9-11 hours with breaks. The alternative via Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Pathankot has more highway and fewer hill bends, which some drivers prefer.

  • Fuel and tolls for a petrol hatchback or sedan: approx. ₹4,500-6,500 one way.
  • Start by 5-6 am to clear Delhi traffic and do the hill section in daylight.
  • In McLeod Ganj, parking is very limited and the main square has one-way systems. Ask your hotel about parking before you book.

Taxi from Delhi, Chandigarh or Amritsar

One-way taxis are popular with families and groups because the per-person cost becomes reasonable. Approx. one-way fares as of 2026:

FromDistanceDrive timeApprox. one-way taxi fare
Delhi475-500 km9-11 hrs₹10,000-15,000
Chandigarhapprox. 240 km5-6 hrs₹5,000-6,500
Amritsarapprox. 200 km4.5-5.5 hrs₹4,500-6,000
Pathankotapprox. 90 km2.5-3 hrs₹2,500-3,500
Kangra Airport12-20 km30-60 min₹800-1,500

Fares depend on vehicle size (hatchback, sedan, SUV), tolls and state taxes. For a detailed breakdown on the Delhi route, read our Dharamshala to Delhi taxi guide, or get a fixed quote from our local taxi team.

From Chandigarh and Amritsar by bus

HRTC and Punjab state buses run from Chandigarh (Sector 43 ISBT) to Dharamshala, taking about 6-7 hours, at approx. ₹500-900. From Amritsar there are a few direct buses, or you can go via Pathankot. Amritsar plus Dharamshala is a very common combination: visit the Golden Temple, then take a morning taxi into the hills.

Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj: The Last 9 km

Many visitors are surprised that "Dharamshala" is really two towns. Lower Dharamshala (Kotwali Bazaar, the main bus stand, the cricket stadium) sits at roughly 1,400 m, while McLeod Ganj sits above it at around 1,800 m. If your hotel is in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot, you will need this last leg. See our Dharamshala vs McLeod Ganj guide if you have not decided where to stay.

  • Local bus: HRTC and local buses shuttle between Dharamshala bus stand and McLeod Ganj through the day. Approx. ₹20-40, 30-45 minutes. Cheap but crowded in peak season.
  • Taxi: approx. ₹300-500 for the 9-10 km road, 20-30 minutes. Taxi stands are at the Dharamshala bus stand and Kotwali Bazaar. Shared taxis also run on this route.
  • Dharamshala Skyway (ropeway): the cable car opened in 2022 and links lower Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj in about 5 minutes. However, operations were suspended in August 2025 after a landslide near one of its towers, and the ropeway has been closed for safety reviews at times since. Treat it as a scenic bonus rather than reliable transport, and check its status locally before you plan on it.

Which Route Should You Choose?

  • Short weekend from Delhi: overnight Volvo both ways, or fly in and bus back. Pair it with our weekend itinerary.
  • Family with young children or elders: fly to Kangra if fares are reasonable; otherwise a private taxi with a midway breakfast stop.
  • Coming from Mumbai or Bangalore: fly to Delhi, then overnight bus or a connecting flight to Kangra.
  • Travelling in monsoon: prefer road over the earliest or latest flights, keep a buffer day and read our monsoon travel guide first.
