Pathankot to Dharamshala 2026: Taxi, Bus, Toy Train & Time

Short answer: Pathankot is about 90 km from Dharamshala, 2.5 to 3 hours by taxi, and about 95 km (3 to 3.5 hours) from McLeod Ganj. Our fixed taxi fares from Pathankot station start at ₹3,200 to Dharamshala (26 October 2026). HRTC buses are the budget option, and the Kangra toy train runs from Pathankot Junction at 05:00 and 07:00 to Kangra, about 18 to 20 km below Dharamshala, on the October 2026 timetable.

Which Pathankot station will I arrive at?

There are two, and it matters for your pickup:

• Pathankot Junction (PTK), in town. Broad-gauge trains stop here, and it is the starting station of the narrow-gauge Kangra toy train.
• Pathankot Cantt (PTKC), about 3 km away. This is the station that used to be called Chakki Bank; it was renamed in 2013. Many long-distance trains on the Delhi to Jammu line stop only here, and some stop for just a few minutes.

Check your ticket for the station code and give it to your driver. Our taxi pages list both: Pathankot railway station and Chakki Bank (Pathankot Cantt). If you want the toy train but arrive at Pathankot Cantt, allow time for an auto or taxi to the Junction.

What does a taxi from Pathankot to Dharamshala cost?

These are our fixed fares as listed on 26 October 2026. Each includes an AC car, train tracking and pickup at the station; tolls are extra, and on the Dharamshala route so is the Himachal entry tax for non-HP vehicles where it applies.

The exact fare is confirmed before the trip. Because the driver tracks your train, a late arrival is not a problem; give your train number when you book a taxi.

Is there a bus from Pathankot to Dharamshala?

Yes. Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses run from the Pathankot bus stand towards Dharamshala, and buses heading for Kangra, Palampur and beyond pass along the same highway. We could not verify a current timetable or fares on HRTC's own site on 26 October 2026, so:

• Check departures and book where available on HRTC's online booking portal (online.hrtchp.com).
• Or ask at Pathankot bus stand (01862-226966, as listed on the Kangra district website).
• Allow roughly 3.5 to 4 hours by ordinary bus, as in our how to reach Dharamshala guide.

Most buses end at the Dharamshala bus stand in the lower town. For McLeod Ganj, change there to a local bus or taxi for the last 9 km; our local transport guide explains how.

Can I take the toy train from Pathankot to Dharamshala?

Not all the way. There is no railway station in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj. The Kangra toy train goes from Pathankot Junction to Kangra, about 18 to 20 km below Dharamshala, and on to Baijnath Paprola.

On the October 2026 timetable:

From Kangra station, our Kangra station to Dharamshala taxi is ₹1,000 for about 20 km and 40 minutes (26 October 2026). Tickets are unreserved, bought at the station counter or on the UTS app; there is no train from Pathankot after 07:00.

Is it running? As of 26 October 2026, partly: Northern Railway restored 4 of the 7 pre-2022 train pairs on 11 October 2026 after a monsoon suspension (The Tribune, 12 October 2026), including both Pathankot trains above. We found no report of a fresh suspension since, but this line can stop at short notice after rain, so check NTES or call 139 on the morning you travel. Why the toy train from Pathankot stopped for four years

The Chakki river railway bridge near Kandwal, on the Punjab and Himachal border, was washed away in the floods of August 2022, cutting the line from Pathankot. The railways rebuilt it at an estimated ₹70 crore, and through trains from Pathankot resumed on 2 June 2026 after nearly four years (The Tribune). Monsoon suspensions followed in July and August 2026, and services came back on 11 October 2026. Older blogs that say "the toy train does not run from Pathankot" are out of date.

Which option is best for me?

Our advice: if your train reaches Pathankot before 7 am and you love trains, ride the toy train to Kangra. Otherwise take a taxi; you will be in Dharamshala by mid-morning.

Pathankot to Dharamshala by road: what to expect

The road climbs gently from the Punjab plains into Himachal via Nurpur and Shahpur, then up through the Kangra Valley with the Dhauladhar range ahead. It is a well-paved highway; the last stretch from Dharamshala up to McLeod Ganj is steep and narrow. Expect a tea stop on the way.

Where to stay after a long journey

McLeod Ganj suits a first visit without a car; lower Dharamshala is quicker to reach from Pathankot and easier for parking.
