Getting around Dharamshala comes down to three options: HRTC local buses (cheapest, approx. ₹20-30 between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj), union taxis on fixed rates (approx. ₹300-500 for the same trip), and your own feet, which is often fastest within McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot. The Dharamshala Skyway ropeway was suspended in August 2025 after a landslide near one of its towers, so check locally whether it has reopened before counting on it. Auto-rickshaws are rare up the hill, and app cabs are not a reliable option.

Below is how each option works, with routes, approx. fares as of 2026, walking shortcuts, driving and parking advice for narrow hill roads, renting a scooter legally, and how to reach the trailheads.

How the area is laid out

Lower Dharamshala (Kotwali Bazaar, the main bus stand, around 1,250-1,450 m) and McLeod Ganj (around 1,750-1,800 m) are about 9-10 km apart by road. Bhagsu is about 2 km east of McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot about 3 km uphill by road, and Naddi about 4 km. Between them sit Gangchen Kyishong (the Tibetan administration and Library) and Forsyth Ganj (St. John in the Wilderness church). Our Dharamshala vs McLeod Ganj guide explains the differences if you are still choosing a base.

HRTC local buses

Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses run between the Dharamshala bus stand in the lower town and the McLeod Ganj bus stand through the day, roughly from early morning until early evening. The ride takes about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic, and fares are around ₹20-30 (approx., 2026). Buses can be crowded at school and office times.

Other useful local and regional routes from the Dharamshala bus stand include Kangra, Gaggal, Palampur, Norbulingka/Sidhbari side, Chamunda, and longer routes to Pathankot, Bir (via Baijnath), Manali and Chandigarh. Some buses also stop at Kotwali Bazaar. Timings change, so ask at the enquiry counter or check the HRTC website or app.

Tips:

  • Keep small notes; conductors may not have change for ₹500.
  • Seats are reserved for women and senior citizens on HRTC buses.
  • Luggage is fine within reason, but a big backpack in a crowded bus is hard work. Take a taxi for heavy bags.

Shared taxis and jeeps

Shared vehicles sometimes run between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, and on village routes, when there are enough passengers. They leave when full and charge per seat. Availability depends on the time of day and season, so do not plan around them; treat them as a bonus.

Union taxis: how they work and approx. fares

Taxis in McLeod Ganj, lower Dharamshala and at Gaggal Airport are organised into local taxi unions with stands and fixed-rate boards. App cabs do not operate reliably here, and outside taxis generally cannot pick up passengers locally. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and are usually for a hatchback or sedan; SUVs cost more.

RouteApprox. fare (sedan, one way, 2026)
McLeod Ganj to Dharamshala bus stand₹300-500
McLeod Ganj to Bhagsu₹150-250
McLeod Ganj to Dharamkot₹200-300
McLeod Ganj to Naddi₹250-350
McLeod Ganj to Norbulingka / Gyuto (Sidhbari)₹600-900
McLeod Ganj to Gaggal Airport₹1,000-1,500
Dharamshala to Kangra Fort₹800-1,200
Local sightseeing, full day₹2,000-3,000
McLeod Ganj to Bir (one way)₹2,500-3,500

These are approximate and change with fuel prices and season. Always check the rate board at the stand or ask your hotel. Waiting time, night charges (often after about 9-10 pm) and parking or toll costs are extra.

Pre-booking makes sense for airport transfers, early-morning bus arrivals, trailhead drops, and day trips. You can arrange these through our taxi service or the dedicated Gaggal airport to Dharamshala taxi.

Auto-rickshaws

Autos are uncommon on the hill roads to McLeod Ganj and the villages because of the gradients. You may find some in the lower town and the valley. For anything uphill, a taxi is the default.

The ropeway (Dharamshala Skyway)

The cable car opened in 2022 and connects lower Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj in about 5 minutes, cutting out the road traffic. Operations were suspended in August 2025 after a landslide near one of its towers. As of our last update we cannot confirm a reopening date, so check locally before planning around it. If it is running when you visit, it is a useful time-saver, especially on peak-season weekends when the road jams.

Walking: shortcuts and distances

Walking is the best way to get around McLeod Ganj and its villages, though everything is either up or down.

  • McLeod Ganj to Bhagsu: about 2 km along the road, 25-30 minutes. Easy.
  • McLeod Ganj to Dharamkot: about 30-45 minutes on the steep road, or via footpaths that branch off near the Bhagsu road. Lovely by day; dark and isolated after sunset.
  • Bhagsu to Dharamkot: a steep footpath of about 20-30 minutes connects the two villages.
  • McLeod Ganj to Naddi: about 4 km along the road past Dal Lake, roughly an hour.
  • McLeod Ganj to Gangchen Kyishong and down to Kotwali Bazaar: there are footpaths and steps that cut off the road bends. Going down takes about an hour; coming up is a real workout. The Lingkhor kora path around the Dalai Lama Temple also links to these routes.
  • McLeod Ganj to Forsyth Ganj / St. John in the Wilderness: about 1.5-2 km along the road, a pleasant 20-30 minute walk.

Wear shoes with grip, carry a torch after dark, and watch for monkeys on forest paths. Our easy hikes near McLeod Ganj turns several of these into half-day walks.

Driving and parking on narrow hill roads

If you are driving yourself:

  • Roads are narrow and many sections are effectively single-lane. Uphill traffic generally has right of way, but in practice, the vehicle with the easiest place to stop gives way. Honk on blind bends.
  • McLeod Ganj has one-way loops around the main square, Temple Road and Jogiwara Road. Follow the police and signs; getting this wrong means a long reverse.
  • Parking is the biggest headache. Space in McLeod Ganj is scarce and paid; there is paid parking near the bus stand area. Do not park on the roadside where signs say no; towing and fines happen. Choose a hotel with parking, or leave the car in lower Dharamshala and take a taxi up.
  • Avoid weekends and holidays between late morning and evening in peak season (May-June, October, Christmas-New Year); jams on the road to McLeod Ganj can add an hour.
  • Winter and monsoon: roads can be icy after snowfall, and landslides block roads in the monsoon. Local taxi drivers know the conditions; consider leaving the driving to them.
  • Out-of-state cars pay an HP entry tax at the border. See our rules and permits guide.

Renting scooters and bikes

Scooter and motorbike rentals are available in McLeod Ganj and lower Dharamshala. Things to know:

  • Legal rentals use vehicles registered for commercial rental (usually with yellow or black-on-yellow number plates). Renting a privately registered bike is not legal and may leave you uninsured.
  • You need a valid driving licence for two-wheelers. Foreigners should carry an International Driving Permit with their home licence.
  • Helmets are compulsory for rider and pillion. Police checks are common at the bottom of the McLeod Ganj road.
  • Check brakes, tyres and lights before you sign, photograph the vehicle, and keep the rental papers with you.
  • Hill riding is hard. Steep gradients, sharp bends, buses and taxis coming at you, gravel on the road. If you are not an experienced rider, take taxis instead.

Approx. rates are ₹500-1,000 per day for a scooter and more for bigger bikes, as of 2026; check locally.
