First, Understand Where "Dharamshala" Is

Many travellers book a "Dharamshala hotel" without realising how spread out the town is. Lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are about 9-10 km apart by road and roughly 400 m apart in altitude, and the drive takes 20-30 minutes by taxi (approx. ₹300-500). Some listings described as Dharamshala are actually in Sidhbari, Kandi or out towards Kangra, so always check the map pin.

Best Hotels in Lower Dharamshala

Lower Dharamshala does not have the cafe scene of McLeod Ganj, but it wins on space, parking and access. Roads reach the door, the airport and the HPCA stadium are close, and resorts here have grounds that hotels squeezed onto McLeod Ganj's hillside cannot match.

Radisson Blu Resort Dharamshala (Kandi, Khaniyara Road)

Radisson Blu Resort Dharamshala is one of the most complete resorts in the area: an outdoor pool plus a separate children's pool, a full-service spa with sauna, a gym, a bar and play areas for kids. Standard rooms are about 32 sq m and sleep two adults plus two children, and there is a 72 sq m family duplex for four. It sits roughly 4 km from Kotwali Bazaar, about 15 minutes' drive from the HPCA stadium and about half an hour from Gaggal airport. Best for: families, wedding parties and cricket trips. Trade-off: McLeod Ganj is about 35 minutes away, so budget for taxis.

Atman, Dharamshala (Kandi, Khaniyara Road)

Atman is a small Leisure Hotels boutique resort, opened in 2021 and built in the traditional kath-kuni style of layered stone and timber. With fewer than twenty rooms, a garden cafe and lounge, a yoga and meditation space and a library, it feels very different from a big resort. The premium suites have balconies facing the Dhauladhar. Best for: couples and families who want a quiet, design-led stay. Trade-off: like the Radisson, it is a drive from McLeod Ganj and the airport.

Panchvati Cottages (Rakkar Road)

Panchvati Cottages on Rakkar Road is one of the properties you can book directly on our site, listed at approx. ₹4,000-9,700 a night (Super Deluxe rooms from around ₹5,000, family rooms from around ₹7,000, where a child can stay free). It has on-site parking, WiFi and air conditioning in some rooms, and is couple friendly. Best for: couples and small families arriving by car who want a straightforward lower-town base. Note: no pets.

HPTDC Hotel Kunal (near the bus stand)

HPTDC Hotel Kunal is the Himachal Tourism hotel a few minutes' walk from the Dharamshala bus stand. Rooms are simple deluxe and semi-deluxe categories with attached bathrooms and hot water, and there is a restaurant, room service and parking. It will not win prizes for character, but if your overnight Volvo arrives at dawn or you leave early, it is hard to beat for convenience. Kotwali Bazaar is about 5 minutes' drive and the HPCA stadium about 10. Best for: transit stays, families and cricket fans on a budget.

Norling House, Norbulingka Institute (Sidhbari)

Norling House is the guesthouse inside the Norbulingka Institute's gardens, among water channels, small bridges and shady trees. Each room is themed on an animal from Tibetan mythology, with furniture and paintings from the institute's own workshops, and breakfast is included. The Hosteller Dharamshala (Bangatu)

The Hosteller is a rural hostel well away from the crowds, with mixed and female-only dorms that have en-suite bathrooms, private rooms, a rooftop vegetarian cafe with valley views and workstations. Be honest with yourself about access: the last 4 km or so is an unpaved road and there is no on-site parking, so come by taxi. The bus stand is about 7 km away. Best for: backpackers and remote workers who want quiet.

Best Hotels Up the Hill: McLeod Ganj, Naddi, Bhagsu and Dharamkot

McLeod Ganj

Naddi and Dal Lake

Best Hotels in Dharamshala by Budget

A few honest notes on value:

• Budget rooms are genuinely good value here, but check for hot water and a heater between November and March. A cheap room with a weak geyser is a miserable room in January.
• The mid-range is the sweet spot. For approx. ₹2,500-4,000 you can usually get a balcony with a mountain view, which is the single thing most guests remember.
• Upscale does not always mean better views. Some of the best Dhauladhar views are from mid-range places in Naddi, while some expensive rooms face the valley or another building. Ask which way the room faces.

Families with children or elderly parents

Choose road access first and views second. Parking is the hidden cost of McLeod Ganj. If you are driving, lower Dharamshala, Naddi and Satobari are easier; in the upper town, WelcomHeritage Natraj, HPTDC Hotel Bhagsu and Regenta Inn Luxinna Heights list parking. What to Check Before You Book

These are the questions our team asks before recommending any room:

1. Exact location. "Dharamshala" on a listing can mean anywhere from Sidhbari to the Kangra highway. Check the map pin against where you will spend your days.
2. Can a car reach the door? In McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot many guesthouses are down steps or along footpaths. With heavy bags, children or elders, this matters more than the room.
3. Steps and slopes. Hillside hotels often have stairs inside too, and few have lifts. If mobility is a concern, read our accessibility guide.
4. Heating and hot water in winter. From November to March, ask whether rooms have heaters (and whether they cost extra) and how long the geyser takes to heat.
5. Mountain or valley view. The Dhauladhar is to the north. "Valley view" is pleasant, but it is not the snow peaks.
6. Power backup. Short power cuts are common, especially in storms. Ask whether the hotel has an inverter or generator, and whether it covers WiFi and geysers.
7. Parking. If you are driving, confirm parking at the hotel, not "nearby".
8. Noise. Rooms on the main roads in McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu pick up horns and late-night chatter. Ask for a room at the back.
9. Meals. Some places are pure vegetarian; some have no restaurant at all. Fine in McLeod Ganj, harder in Naddi or Bangatu.
