Christmas & New Year in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: 2026 Guide
Planning Christmas or New Year in Dharamshala? Crowds, snow chances, prices and when to book, St John in the Wilderness, what is open for parties, traffic, weather and quieter alternatives.

Christmas and New Year are among the busiest weeks of the year in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. From about December 23 to January 2, hotel rates typically rise 1.5 to 2.5 times, the McLeod Ganj road jams in the evenings, and good rooms sell out weeks in advance. In return you get crisp, clear days with the Dhauladhar fully snow-covered, a festive atmosphere in the cafes, a Christmas service at the historic St John in the Wilderness church, and New Year's Eve parties ranging from rooftop dinners to bonfire nights.
What you probably will not get, despite what reels suggest, is guaranteed snow in town. Snowfall in McLeod Ganj at Christmas is possible but uncommon, and Dharamshala town itself rarely sees snow at all. This guide covers realistic snow chances, crowd timing, prices, booking, what is open, traffic and the quieter places (like Naddi and Dharamkot) where we would actually spend the week. Prices are approx. as of 2026.

Crowds: What to Expect
Late December brings domestic tourists from Punjab, Delhi NCR, Haryana and Gujarat, college groups and many families on school holidays. The pattern we see every year:
- December 20–23: busy but manageable.
- December 24–26: very busy; McLeod Ganj main square and Temple Road crowded all day.
- December 27–29: slightly calmer midweek.
- December 30–January 1: the biggest crush; roads into McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu jammed in the evenings.
- January 2 onwards: crowds drop quickly; prices ease within days.
If you can shift your trip to mid-December or the first half of January, you get the same weather and views at a fraction of the cost and stress.
Snow Chances: Honest Answer
- Dharamshala town (approx. 1,200–1,450 m): snow is rare in any month.
- McLeod Ganj (approx. 2,000 m): light snowfall happens some winters, usually after a strong western disturbance, and more often in January and February than at Christmas.
- Naddi and Dharamkot: slightly higher and more exposed; a little more likely to get a dusting.
- Triund (approx. 2,850 m) and beyond: snow is common from late December; the trek can be icy and sometimes closed after heavy snow.
- The Dhauladhar range is reliably snow-covered and looks spectacular from almost everywhere.
If seeing snow underfoot is the main goal, plan a flexible day for a snow trip (Triund with a guide when conditions allow, or a drive towards higher points after a snowfall). Read our Dharamshala winter snowfall guide and Triund trek guide before you go.
Weather and What to Pack
Late December days are usually sunny and pleasant in the sun, cold in the shade. Nights drop close to freezing in McLeod Ganj and below freezing at Naddi and Dharamkot.
- Thermal inner layers, a fleece and a down or heavy jacket
- Woollen cap, gloves, warm socks
- Shoes with grip (frost and wet stairs are slippery)
- Lip balm and sunscreen: the winter sun is strong
- A power bank: power cuts happen in storms
Our weather and packing guide has a full list. Ask hotels whether rooms have heaters and whether there is a charge for them.
St John in the Wilderness at Christmas
St John in the Wilderness, the 1852 neo-Gothic stone church in the deodar forest at Forsyth Ganj (between Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj), is the most atmospheric place in the area at Christmas. It is an active church of the Church of North India, and services are held around Christmas.
- Service timings vary year to year; check the notice at the church or ask locally a few days before.
- Visitors are welcome at services; dress modestly, keep phones silent and avoid photography during worship.
- The churchyard holds the memorial of Lord Elgin, Viceroy of India, who died in Dharamshala in 1863.
- Midday visits are calmer; the road outside can jam around service times.
Prices and Booking Ahead
| Item | Normal winter (approx.) | Christmas–New Year (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Budget room, McLeod Ganj | ₹1,200–2,000 | ₹2,500–4,000 |
| Mid-range hotel | ₹3,000–5,500 | ₹6,000–10,000 |
| Upscale / boutique | ₹8,000–15,000 | ₹15,000–30,000+ |

| Taxi Gaggal Airport → McLeod Ganj | ₹1,000–1,500 | can be higher at peak; book ahead |
Booking tips:
- Book by late October or early November for the best choice. By mid-December, good mid-range rooms are scarce.
- Check for compulsory gala dinners on December 24 and 31. Many hotels add them to the room rate.
- Minimum stays of two or three nights are common over New Year.
- Read cancellation terms carefully; peak-season bookings are often non-refundable.
- Compare options on our hotels page and our guide to the best hotels in McLeod Ganj.
Parties and What Is Open
- Christmas Eve and Day: many cafes in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot put up decorations and serve Christmas specials (cakes, roasts, mulled-wine-style drinks where licensed).
- New Year's Eve: hotels run gala dinners with DJs or live music; licensed bars and rooftop restaurants host parties. Our nightlife guide covers the scene.
- Late-night timings: in recent years the state government has often allowed licensed bars and hotels to stay open later on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The specific order is issued each year, so check locally rather than assuming.
- Dharamkot and Bhagsu host more informal, backpacker-style events; quality and legality vary. Stick to licensed venues.
- Tibetan institutions do not celebrate Christmas, but monasteries and the Tsuglagkhang stay open as normal; it is a calm counterpoint to the party scene.
Safety: drink driving checks are common, open-air drinking in public places is not allowed, and narrow hill roads at 1 am are dangerous. Book a taxi back in advance, and travel back in a group if you can.
Traffic and Getting Around
- Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj (approx. 9–10 km via the main road) can take over an hour in the evening at peak. Walking parts of it, or using the cable car when operating, can be faster.
- McLeod Ganj to Bhagsu jams near Bhagsu in the evenings; walk if your bags are light.
- Parking in McLeod Ganj is scarce; police divert vehicles and enforce one-way rules at peak times. If you are driving, choose a hotel with parking.
- Arrive in daylight. Long Delhi–Dharamshala drives on December 24 and 30 see heavy traffic at Una, Mubarakpur and Kangra.
- Flights: Delhi fog can delay or cancel flights to Kangra in late December; see our Kangra airport guide.
For autos, shared taxis and the cable car, see our local transport guide. For transfers, book a taxi ahead of time.
Quieter Alternatives
If you want the views and winter magic without the McLeod Ganj crush, consider:
- Naddi: a ridge village above McLeod Ganj with some of the best Dhauladhar views and noticeably quieter nights. See our Naddi travel guide and Naddi destination page.
- Dharamkot: a forest village above Bhagsu with cafes and a laid-back crowd; busy in the evenings around New Year, but calmer than McLeod Ganj. See our Dharamkot guide.
- Sidhbari and lower Dharamshala: warmer, quiet, close to Norbulingka and Gyuto.
- Palampur or Bir: slower holiday weeks with tea gardens or monasteries; see our Palampur travel guide.
Things to Do Over the Holidays
The holiday week is a good time for the classic sights, provided you go early in the day:
- Tsuglagkhang (Dalai Lama Temple) complex: open as usual; the morning kora (circuit) path is peaceful even at peak season. See our Dalai Lama Temple guide.
- Bhagsu waterfall: go before 10 am; by noon the path is packed.
- Dal Lake and Naddi sunset point: best at sunset, but traffic on the way back can be slow.
- Norbulingka Institute and Gyuto Monastery: lower and warmer, and much less crowded than McLeod Ganj.
- Short treks: Triund is possible on clear days with proper shoes and an early start; check snow and ice conditions with a local guide. Gallu Devi and the forest trails above Dharamkot make a gentler option.
- Cafe hopping: McLeod Ganj and Dharamkot cafes are at their cosiest in winter.
Christmas vs New Year: Which Week Is Better?
| Christmas week (Dec 22–27) | New Year week (Dec 29–Jan 1) | |
|---|---|---|
| Crowds | High, mainly families | Highest; families plus large groups |
| Atmosphere | Festive, church service, cafes decorated | Party focus, gala dinners, fireworks at some hotels |
| Hotel prices | High | Highest; minimum stays common |
| Traffic | Heavy evenings | Heaviest, especially Dec 30–31 |
| Best for | Couples, families, slower travellers | Groups who want parties |
If you want both festive spirit and space, arrive around December 21 and leave by December 27, or arrive January 1 evening when the crowds start to thin.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Arriving on December 31 without a confirmed room.
- Driving up from Delhi overnight on December 30 and getting stuck in jams at Kangra and Dharamshala.
- Assuming snow and building the whole trip around it.
- Booking a hotel with no parking when you are driving your own car.
- Forgetting that many budget rooms have no heating.
A Sample 4-Day Christmas Plan
- December 23: arrive, check in, evening walk on Jogiwara Road and Temple Road.
- December 24: morning at the Tsuglagkhang, afternoon at St John in the Wilderness, Christmas Eve dinner.
- December 25: day trip to Naddi and Dal Lake, or a guided snow walk if conditions allow.
- December 26: Norbulingka and Gyuto in Sidhbari, then depart or extend.
