Kangra Airport (Gaggal) Guide: Flights, Taxi Fares, Delays and Tips (2026)
Everything about flying into Dharamshala: which airlines fly to Kangra Airport at Gaggal, terminal facilities, taxi fares to Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Palampur and Bir, local buses, weather delays and baggage limits on small planes.

The Short Answer
Kangra Airport (code DHM) at Gaggal is the airport for Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Palampur and Bir. It is about 12-15 km from Dharamshala town and roughly 20 km from McLeod Ganj, 30-60 minutes by taxi. As of 2026, IndiGo lists flights to Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Noida, and Alliance Air lists a link with Shimla. All flights use small turboprop aircraft because the runway is short, so seats are limited, fares rise quickly and bad weather can cause delays.
From the airport, a taxi to Dharamshala costs approx. ₹800-1,200, to McLeod Ganj approx. ₹1,000-1,500, as of 2026. You can pre-book a Gaggal Airport to Dharamshala taxi so a driver is waiting when you land.

Which Airlines Fly to Kangra?
| Airline | Routes listed (as of 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Noida | Delhi is the main route with the most frequency; others are less frequent and seasonal |
| Alliance Air | Shimla | Small regional service; frequency varies |
Airlines have come and gone on this airport. SpiceJet and Alliance Air have flown the Delhi route in past years, and route lists change with the season. Always confirm on the airline website before booking connecting travel or tours around a specific flight.
Coming from Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata or Hyderabad? There are no direct flights. Connect via Delhi. On separate tickets, leave at least 3 hours between flights, and more in winter fog season, when Delhi departures can be delayed. If the connection looks risky, land in Delhi and take the overnight bus from Delhi instead.
The Airport Itself
Kangra Airport is small and easy. There is one terminal building, a short walk from the plane, and you can be out of the door within 15-20 minutes of landing if you have no checked bag. It has even been rated highly in the Airports Authority of India customer satisfaction surveys for small airports.
What to expect:
- Basic facilities: waiting area, washrooms, drinking water and usually a small snack counter. Do not count on full meals; eat before your flight.
- ATM and money: do not rely on finding a working ATM inside. Carry some cash for taxis and tips. Our ATM, mobile network and internet guide explains where cash and SIM coverage is reliable.
- Taxi counter: a local taxi counter outside arrivals offers rides at set rates. Fares are fixed rather than metered.
- Mobile signal: good on major networks at the airport and along the highway.
- Security: standard Indian domestic airport rules. Arrive at least 60-90 minutes before departure; check-in closes earlier than many people expect on small aircraft.
- Views: on a clear day the Dhauladhar range rises straight behind the runway. Sit on the side facing the mountains for the approach (it depends on wind direction, so it is a gamble).
Taxi Fares from Gaggal Airport
| Destination | Approx. distance | Approx. time | Approx. fare (sedan, as of 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kangra town | 8-10 km | 20 min | ₹500-700 |
| Dharamshala town / Kotwali Bazaar | 12-15 km | 30-40 min | ₹800-1,200 |
| McLeod Ganj | 20-22 km | 45-60 min | ₹1,000-1,500 |
| Bhagsu / Dharamkot | 22-25 km | 50-70 min | ₹1,200-1,800 |
| Naddi | 22-25 km | 50-70 min | ₹1,200-1,700 |
| Sidhbari (Norbulingka / Gyuto area) | 15-18 km | 30-40 min | ₹800-1,200 |
| Palampur | 40-45 km | 1-1.25 hrs | ₹1,800-2,500 |
| Bir | 65-75 km | 2-2.5 hrs | ₹2,800-3,500 |
| Pathankot | 75-85 km | 2-2.5 hrs | ₹2,500-3,200 |
SUV fares are typically 30-40% higher. Prices rise slightly at night and on festival days. Dharamkot and upper Bhagsu have narrow roads; the car may stop at the nearest point and you walk the last few minutes, so ask your hotel in advance.
Why pre-book? Flights arrive in a small wave, the counter can have a queue, and a pre-booked driver can track your flight if it is delayed. Book on our taxi page or directly for the airport to Dharamshala route.
Buses from Gaggal
If you are travelling light and on a budget, the airport sits close to the main Pathankot - Mandi highway. Walk out of the airport gate to the main road, and HRTC and private local buses heading towards Dharamshala pass regularly in the daytime (approx. ₹30-50 as of 2026, check locally). They end at the Dharamshala bus stand, where you change for McLeod Ganj.
Realistically, buses only make sense in daylight with a backpack. With a suitcase, children or an evening arrival, a taxi is worth the money.
Weather Delays and Cancellations
Kangra is a weather-sensitive airport. Small aircraft, a short runway and mountains on one side mean pilots need good visibility.
| Season | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Monsoon (July to mid-September) | Low cloud and heavy rain; delays, diversions and cancellations are most common now | Prefer the earliest flight of the day, keep a buffer day before onward travel |
| Winter (December-January) | Fog mostly affects Delhi departures in the early morning, which knocks on to Kangra | Avoid tight connections, check flight status before leaving for the airport |
| Pre-monsoon and summer (April-June) | Generally good flying; afternoon thunderstorms possible. Heat and runway length can mean weight restrictions | Keep baggage within limits |
| Autumn (October-November) | The most reliable season, with clear skies | Book early; this is peak season |
If your flight is cancelled, the airline will usually offer a rebooking or refund. The practical backup is the road: Delhi to Dharamshala is 9-11 hours by taxi or an overnight bus. Read our monsoon travel guide if you are flying in July-August.
Baggage Limits on Turboprops
- Check-in baggage: IndiGo domestic economy fares typically include 15 kg, but the allowance depends on your fare type; check your ticket. Extra weight is paid per kg and can be expensive.
- Cabin baggage: usually one bag up to 7 kg plus a small personal item, but ATR overhead bins are small. Larger cabin trolleys may be tagged and placed in the hold at the aircraft door, then returned on the stairs or at the belt. Keep medicines, power banks and valuables in a small bag you can hold.
- Power banks and lithium batteries must be in cabin baggage, never checked.
- Weight restrictions: on hot days or in bad weather, small aircraft at short runways sometimes have payload limits. Rarely, bags may arrive on a later flight. Pack one night's essentials in your cabin bag.
- Trekking gear: trekking poles, tent pegs and gas canisters have airline restrictions. Gas canisters cannot be flown; buy them in McLeod Ganj before the Triund trek.
- Paragliding gear: pilots flying to Bir with their own wing should check sports equipment rules and fees in advance.
Tips for Flying In and Out
- Book early. With about 70 seats per plane, the cheapest Delhi - Kangra fares disappear quickly, especially in May-June, October and the Christmas - New Year week.
- Choose morning flights in the monsoon. Cloud tends to build in the afternoon.
- Do not plan a same-day connection on separate tickets out of Kangra.
- Have a road plan B. Save a taxi contact and bus option. If you need to reach Delhi by a certain time for an international flight, consider leaving a day early.
- Leave for the airport early in peak season. The road from McLeod Ganj through Dharamshala can be slow; allow 75 minutes from McLeod Ganj.
- Sit on the side facing the mountains for the approach, if you can guess right.
- Stay close if you have an early flight. Lower Dharamshala or Sidhbari is much closer than Dharamkot or upper Bhagsu.
