The Short Answer

Chandigarh to Dharamshala is roughly 235-250 km by road and takes 5.5-7 hours by car or 7-9 hours by bus. The usual road runs Chandigarh - Ropar - Kiratpur Sahib - Anandpur Sahib - Nangal - Una - Amb - Dehra/Ranital - Kangra - Dharamshala. Add another 9 km and 20-30 minutes if you are going up to McLeod Ganj.

For most people the choice is simple. Travelling solo or on a budget? Take an HRTC bus from ISBT Sector 43. Two to four people, or travelling with kids or elders? A one-way taxi (approx. ₹5,000-6,500 per car as of 2026) is the most comfortable and costs about the same per head as two AC bus seats once you add the local transfer at the other end. Short on time and the fare is right? IndiGo has listed a Chandigarh - Kangra (Gaggal) flight, which turns a day of driving into about an hour in the air.

By Bus from ISBT Sector 43

Chandigarh's main interstate terminal, ISBT Sector 43, is where almost all buses to Himachal leave from. HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) runs the bulk of the Dharamshala services, and Punjab and private operators add a few more. ISBT Sector 17 is mostly for Punjab and local routes, so do not go there for Himachal buses unless your ticket says so.

What kinds of buses run

  • HRTC ordinary buses run through the day. They stop often, are not air-conditioned and take the longest, but they are cheap and you rarely need to book ahead outside holiday weekends.
  • HRTC deluxe and AC buses run fewer times a day, usually including some early-morning and overnight departures. Overnight buses reach Dharamshala in the early hours, which is uncomfortable if your hotel only allows check-in at noon.
  • Private buses sold on the big booking apps mostly run at night and often start from Delhi, picking up in Chandigarh on the way. Check the boarding point carefully; it may be a roadside stop on the Zirakpur or Kharar side rather than the ISBT.

Timings change every season, so check the HRTC online booking site or app for the current list, or ask at the HRTC counter at Sector 43. The HRTC booking site shows reserved buses; ordinary buses can usually be boarded with a ticket bought from the conductor.

Where the bus drops you

HRTC buses end at the Dharamshala bus stand (ISBT) in lower Dharamshala. From there, local HRTC buses and shared taxis climb to McLeod Ganj in about 25-40 minutes; a taxi costs approx. ₹350-500. If your hotel is in Bhagsu, Dharamkot or Naddi, take a taxi straight there. Our local transport guide covers buses, taxis and the ropeway status in detail.

Bus tips

  • The last two hours, from Ranital or Kangra onwards, are winding. Sit in the front half on the left if you get motion sickness, and take a tablet before the hills start.
  • Ordinary buses stop for a meal around Una or Amb. Carry water and a snack anyway.
  • In peak season (May-June, October, Christmas to New Year) book AC buses at least a few days ahead.

By Taxi

A one-way taxi from Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula or the airport to Dharamshala costs approx. ₹5,000-6,500 for a sedan and ₹6,500-8,500 for an Innova-type SUV as of 2026, including tolls in most quotes (confirm this). Drivers usually charge a little more for McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot or Naddi because of the steep last stretch.

Why a taxi makes sense here: you leave when you want, stop at Anandpur Sahib or Chintpurni without fuss, and get dropped at your hotel door, which matters in McLeod Ganj where buses cannot reach most lanes. You can book a Chandigarh - Dharamshala taxi with us with a fixed fare and a driver who knows the hill roads.

Coming from Chandigarh airport? It sits on the Mohali/Zirakpur side, so you save the city traffic and should reach Dharamshala in 5.5-6.5 hours if you land before noon.

Self-Drive: The Route, Stop by Stop

The route you will use 90% of the time is the Ropar - Nangal - Una corridor:

  1. Chandigarh to Ropar (Rupnagar), about 45 km. Four-lane highway via Kharar and Kurali. 50-60 minutes.
  2. Ropar to Kiratpur Sahib and Anandpur Sahib, about 30-40 km. Flat, fast road along the Sutlej canal. Anandpur Sahib, home of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, is a worthwhile 30-minute stop.
  3. Anandpur Sahib to Nangal and Una, about 45 km. You cross into Himachal around Mehatpur, just before Una. Expect a state entry point; Himachal charges an entry tax on outside-registered private vehicles, payable online or at the barrier (check the current rate before you go).
  4. Una to Amb and Mubarikpur, about 30 km. The road starts to roll through low hills.
  5. Mubarikpur to Dehra and Ranital, about 45 km. Pleasant valley driving with the Dhauladhar appearing ahead on clear days. Dehra is close to the Pong Dam reservoir.
  6. Ranital to Kangra to Dharamshala, about 40 km. Through Kangra town (traffic near the market) and then up to Dharamshala.

Alternatives

  • Via Kiratpur - Bilaspur - Hamirpur: use the newer four-lane towards Bilaspur, then Hamirpur and Nadaun to join the Kangra road. Slightly longer, but useful if the Una side has roadworks or traffic, or if you are combining the trip with Hamirpur or Palampur.
  • Via Hoshiarpur and Gagret: some drivers from the Mohali or Ludhiana side prefer this. It joins the main route near Amb.
  • For Palampur or Bir directly: continue from Ranital via Nagrota Bagwan, or go via Hamirpur. Palampur is roughly as far from Chandigarh as Dharamshala is.

Always check live traffic before leaving. Roadworks shift on these highways every season, and in the monsoon a landslide on one route can make the other the obvious choice. Our monsoon travel guide explains what to expect from July to mid-September.

Self-drive costs and practicalities

  • Fuel: approx. 480-520 km round trip from Chandigarh, so plan on approx. ₹2,000-2,800 each way for an average petrol car (as of 2026).
  • Tolls: there are toll plazas on the Punjab stretch; keep FASTag topped up.
  • Himachal entry tax: charged on most out-of-state private vehicles; check the current rate and online payment option before the trip.
  • Fuel stops: easy all the way to Kangra. Fill up before heading to remote places like Bir or Barot.
  • Parking: the hardest part of the trip. McLeod Ganj has paid parking but it fills up by mid-morning in season; many hotels in Dharamkot and upper Bhagsu have no car access at all. Confirm parking with your hotel.
  • Night driving: avoid the hill stretch after dark if you are not used to it. Cattle, trucks without lights and tight bends make it tiring.

If you love temples, our Kangra Devi temples guide shows how to fit Chintpurni, Jwalamukhi, Brajeshwari and Chamunda into the drive. Kangra Fort is better saved for a separate half day; see places to visit in Kangra.

By Air: Chandigarh to Kangra

Kangra Airport at Gaggal has only a short runway, so it is served by small turboprop planes. As of 2026, IndiGo lists Chandigarh among its Kangra routes, alongside Delhi, Jaipur and Noida, but frequency on the Chandigarh sector is low and has changed from season to season. Check the IndiGo website for the current schedule before you plan around it.

Is it worth it? Only sometimes. By the time you reach Chandigarh airport an hour early and get from Gaggal to your hotel, the trip takes 3-4 hours door to door. That is still half the road time, so it makes sense if the fare is reasonable or if someone in your group does not cope well with winding roads. Weather delays at Gaggal are common in the monsoon; our Kangra Airport guide covers what to expect, baggage limits and taxi fares from the airport.

By Train: The Una / Amb Andaura Option

There is no broad-gauge railway to Dharamshala. Your options:

  • Amb Andaura (Una district): the Vande Bharat Express from New Delhi to Amb Andaura stops at Chandigarh and Una, which makes it the fastest rail option from Chandigarh. From Amb Andaura, a taxi to Dharamshala is about 95-100 km and 2.5-3 hours (approx. ₹2,800-3,500). Check current timings and running days on IRCTC.
  • Pathankot: works well from Amritsar or Jammu, but from Chandigarh it is a detour. Skip it unless you want to ride the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley toy train, and check its current operating status first.

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • Solo, backpacking or on a budget: HRTC AC bus from Sector 43 in the morning, then local bus or taxi up to McLeod Ganj.
  • Couple: AC bus if you are flexible, taxi if you want to stop at Anandpur Sahib or Kangra Fort on the way.
  • Family of 3-5: taxi. The cost per head is close to the bus, and you avoid the bus-stand-to-hotel scramble with luggage.
  • Weekend from Chandigarh: leave Friday 6 am, return Sunday after lunch. Our weekend itinerary is built for this.
  • Continuing to Manali: self-drive or taxi. See the Delhi - Dharamshala - Manali itinerary.

Where to Stay When You Arrive

Arriving by bus? Pick a stay within walking distance of the bus stand or main square. In lower town that means near Kotwali Bazaar; up the hill, the McLeod Ganj main square has guesthouses a few minutes away. Arriving by car? Choose a hotel with confirmed parking, which is far easier in Dharamshala town than in McLeod Ganj. Browse all hotels to compare.
