Amritsar to Dharamshala: Distance, Route & Transport (2026)
Complete guide to reaching Dharamshala from Amritsar by bus, taxi, train or self-drive, with three route options, real travel times, costs and stops worth making along the way.

Amritsar to Dharamshala is roughly 200 to 210 km by the most common route, and takes about 5 to 6 hours by road depending on traffic and which route you choose. It is one of the shorter approaches to Dharamshala and a natural combination if you are visiting the Golden Temple before heading to the mountains. Many international travellers fly into Amritsar (Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport) specifically because it is the closest major airport to Dharamshala with good domestic and international connections.
Below is a practical breakdown of every way to make this journey, with honest timings and costs as of 2026. For a wider view of all the ways to reach Dharamshala, see our how to reach Dharamshala guide.
Three Routes Compared
| Route | Distance (approx.) | Drive time (approx.) | Road quality | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Via Pathankot (NH-44 then NH-154) | 200–210 km | 5–6 hrs | Good national highway most of the way | Most popular; reliable and well-maintained |
| Via Nurpur direct (state roads) | 185–195 km | 5–5.5 hrs | Mixed; narrow stretches past Mukerian | Slightly shorter; scenic but slower if you get behind trucks |
| Via Gagal / Kangra (NH-44 then state highway) | 210–220 km | 5.5–6.5 hrs | Good till Gagal, then winding climb | If you want to stop at Kangra Fort or temples on the way |
All three routes share the first 50 to 60 km on the Amritsar–Pathankot stretch of NH-44, which is a well-maintained four-lane highway. The routes diverge after Mukerian or Pathankot.
Route 1: Via Pathankot (Most Common)
The standard route. Take NH-44 from Amritsar to Pathankot (about 100 km, 2 to 2.5 hours), then turn south-east towards Dharamshala on NH-154 through Nurpur and Kangra. The Pathankot-to-Dharamshala leg is about 85 to 90 km and takes 2.5 to 3 hours because the road narrows and climbs once you pass Nurpur. This is the route all HRTC and most private buses use.
Pathankot is a good lunch stop. There are several dhabas and restaurants near the railway station and bus stand. If you have time, the drive through Nurpur town gives you a glimpse of the old Nurpur Fort ruins from the road.
Route 2: Via Nurpur Direct
After crossing Mukerian on NH-44, this route cuts south-east on state roads through Dasuya and Jawali, bypassing Pathankot entirely. It shaves about 15 to 20 km off the total distance but the roads after the NH-44 turnoff are narrower and can be slow behind trucks. Experienced drivers who know the road can save 30 to 45 minutes, but first-timers should stick to the Pathankot route.
Route 3: Via Gagal and Kangra
If you want to visit Kangra Fort, Brajeshwari Devi Temple or the Kangra Art Museum on the way, take the Pathankot route but instead of turning up towards Dharamshala at the usual point, continue to Gagal (Kangra Airport) and Kangra town, then drive up to Dharamshala from there. This adds about 15 to 20 km but lets you combine sightseeing with the transfer. Read our Kangra temples guide for what to see.
By Bus
HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation)
HRTC runs several direct buses daily from Amritsar to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. Most depart from the Amritsar ISBT. The ordinary buses take about 6 to 7 hours and cost approx. ₹350 to ₹450 per person. Semi-deluxe and AC Volvo services run on this route too, costing approx. ₹550 to ₹800, and are more comfortable for the mountain section.
Morning departures (6 am to 8 am) are the best bet — you arrive by early afternoon with daylight to spare. Check the HRTC website or the Amritsar bus stand counter for current timings, as schedules shift seasonally.
PEPSU (Punjab Roadways)
Punjab Roadways (PEPSU) operates buses from Amritsar to Pathankot frequently. From Pathankot, you can catch an onward HRTC bus to Dharamshala. The Amritsar-to-Pathankot leg by Punjab Roadways takes about 2.5 hours and costs approx. ₹150 to ₹200. The Pathankot bus stand is a major junction with HRTC buses to Dharamshala every 30 to 60 minutes.
This two-bus option is useful if you cannot find a direct bus at your preferred time.
By Taxi
A one-way taxi from Amritsar to Dharamshala costs approx. ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 for a sedan (Dzire, Etios) as of 2026. An SUV (Innova, Ertiga) runs approx. ₹5,500 to ₹8,000. Rates depend on the season, vehicle type and whether you book through an aggregator, the airport counter, or a local operator.
The taxi is the most comfortable option and the only practical one if you are arriving on a late flight. You can ask the driver to stop at Pathankot for food or at Kangra Fort if you take that route. The drive from Amritsar airport to McLeod Ganj takes roughly 5 to 6 hours with a single food stop.
You can book a taxi through us or ask at the Amritsar airport prepaid taxi counter. Pre-booking avoids the airport markup.
By Train (Amritsar to Pathankot + Road Transfer)
Several trains run daily from Amritsar Junction to Pathankot (Chakki Bank or Pathankot Junction), taking about 2 to 3 hours. The Jammu Mail and Jan Shatabdi are popular options. From Pathankot, you have two choices:
- Bus: HRTC buses to Dharamshala leave every 30 to 60 minutes (approx. ₹200 to ₹300, 3 hours).
- Taxi: Pathankot to Dharamshala taxis cost approx. ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 for a sedan.
The train option is cheaper overall but adds a transfer. It makes sense if you are on a tight budget or if you want to experience the scenic rail approach into the Himalayan foothills.
Self-Drive Tips
If you are driving your own car from Amritsar:
- Leave early. Starting by 6 to 7 am means you are through Pathankot before the midday truck traffic builds up.
- Fuel up in Amritsar or Pathankot. Petrol stations are sparse on the hill section between Nurpur and Dharamshala.
- The Pathankot-to-Dharamshala stretch has sharp turns after Nurpur. Keep your speed under 40 km/h on the blind bends. Honk before turns — the locals do, and it works.
- Parking in McLeod Ganj is limited. If your hotel has no parking, you may end up in the public parking lot below the main square (approx. ₹50 to ₹100 per day). Consider staying in lower Dharamshala or Naddi if you have a car.
Can You Do Amritsar to Dharamshala as a Day Trip?
Technically yes, but it is exhausting. The 5 to 6 hour drive each way leaves you about 4 to 5 hours in Dharamshala, and you arrive back in Amritsar around 10 pm at the earliest. We do not recommend it. A much better plan is to stay at least one night — use our weekend itinerary or one-day itinerary to plan your time.
If you are combining Amritsar and Dharamshala, give yourself at least 2 nights in each place. This is one of the most rewarding short trips in North India: the Golden Temple, the Wagah border ceremony, then Tibetan monasteries and Himalayan views within a single vacation.
Best Time to Travel
The road is open year-round. Summer (April to June) means hot plains but pleasant hills. Monsoon (July to September) can bring occasional landslides on the Nurpur-to-Dharamshala stretch, adding 1 to 2 hours. Winter is fine on the highway; the hill section rarely gets snow below Dharamshala town. See our month-by-month weather guide for what to expect when you arrive.
