The Short Answer

With one day, base yourself in McLeod Ganj and keep everything within a few kilometres: the Dalai Lama Temple (Tsuglagkhang) and the kora walk in the morning, Bhagsu waterfall before lunch, lunch and cafes in McLeod Ganj, then St. John in the Wilderness church and Naddi for the sunset. Do not try to add Triund, Kangra Fort and Bir to the same day; you will spend it in a car.

If you only have half a day, for example between an overnight bus and an afternoon flight, do the temple and kora, a Tibetan lunch and one viewpoint. Both plans are below with timings.

Morning: the Dalai Lama Temple and the kora

Start early. The Tsuglagkhang Complex is calm in the morning, with monks and Tibetan elders doing prostrations and circumambulations. Dress modestly, walk clockwise, and expect a security check at the gate. Phones are generally fine in the courtyard, but photography is restricted in some halls; follow the signs. Our Dalai Lama Temple guide explains etiquette, timings and how public teachings work.

Then walk the kora, the path that circles the complex through the forest. It is the most peaceful 40 minutes you can spend in McLeod Ganj, and it is free.

Late morning: Bhagsu

Bhagsu is 2 km from the main square. The Bhagsunag Shiva temple has a spring-fed pool, and the waterfall is a short, slightly rocky walk beyond. It is busy on weekends; in the monsoon the falls are spectacular but the path is slippery. See our Bhagsu travel guide.

Alternative if you are fit and want a short hike: walk up from Bhagsu to Dharamkot for the views and a cafe, then come back down. Add 1.5-2 hours and skip shopping. There are several other short forest walks around the village.

Afternoon: food, shops and the church

Lunch in McLeod Ganj is half the point. Try a Tibetan meal; our Tibetan food guide lists what to order. Then browse Temple Road and Jogiwara Road for Tibetan handicrafts, and take a short taxi down to St. John in the Wilderness, the Gothic-style church in Forsyth Ganj with the grave of Lord Elgin.

Sunset: Naddi

From the church, continue to Naddi, about 3-4 km above McLeod Ganj via Dal Lake. On a clear evening, the Dhauladhar turns pink and the Kangra Valley lights come on below. There are tea stalls and small cafes. Arrange your taxi back in advance; it gets dark fast. Details in our Naddi and Dal Lake guide.

Alternative: A Lower Dharamshala Day by Car

If you already know McLeod Ganj, or you are staying in lower Dharamshala or Sidhbari, use a car for a different day:

TimeStopNotes

3:45-4:30 pmWar MemorialQuiet pine-shaded memorial on the way to McLeod Ganj

A local sightseeing taxi for this loop costs approx. ₹2,500-3,500 as of 2026; agree the stops and waiting time before you set off. For more on these places, see places to visit in Dharamshala and the Sidhbari, Norbulingka and Gyuto guide.

The Half-Day Plan for Transit Travellers

Arriving on an overnight bus, leaving in the evening

TimeWhat to do
6:30-7:30 amArrive, freshen up, leave bags at a cafe, guesthouse or with your hotel
7:30-8:30 amBreakfast near the main square
8:30-10:30 amTsuglagkhang, Tibet Museum and the kora
10:30 am-12:30 pmBhagsu temple and waterfall, or a slow cafe morning
12:30-1:30 pmLunch
1:30 pm onwardsRest, shop, then catch the evening bus

Tip: several hotels allow day use or early check-in for a fee. A few hours in a room to shower and nap make the day far more enjoyable. Ask when you book through our hotels page.

Landing at Gaggal Airport with an afternoon or next-morning flight

  • Kangra Airport is about 45-60 minutes from McLeod Ganj. If your flight lands at 11 am, you can be at the temple by 1 pm.
  • Skip Naddi if the return flight is early; instead do Norbulingka, which is close to the airport side.
  • Leave McLeod Ganj at least 2-2.5 hours before departure in peak season.
  • Read the Kangra Airport guide for taxi fares, and book the airport transfer in advance.

Getting Between Stops

Most of the one-day plan is walkable, but McLeod Ganj sits on a steep ridge, so short taxi hops save energy for the evening. Approx. distances, walking times and taxi fares as of 2026:

From - toDistanceWalking timeApprox. taxi fare
Main square - Tsuglagkhang800 m10 min downhillNot worth it
Main square - Bhagsu temple2 km25-30 min₹200-300

Main square - Dharamkot3 km45 min uphill₹250-350
Main square - St. John in the Wilderness2.5 km30 min on the forest road₹250-350
St. John - Naddi via Dal Lake5-6 kmToo far to walk comfortably₹400-600
McLeod Ganj - Dharamshala bus stand9 kmSteep shortcuts only₹350-500

Taxis wait at the main square and charge fixed local rates. Shared taxis and HRTC buses run between McLeod Ganj and lower Dharamshala through the day. For a longer list of options, see our local transport guide.

If It Rains

Rain is common from late June to mid-September and afternoon showers can hit any time in spring. A wet-weather version of the day:

  • Spend longer inside the Tsuglagkhang complex and the Tibet Museum.
  • Visit the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Gangchen Kyishong, between McLeod Ganj and Dharamshala (check opening days).
  • Take a cooking or language class, or settle into a cafe with a view.
  • Skip Bhagsu waterfall if the stream is in spate, and skip Naddi if the valley is in cloud, because you will not see anything.

Who This Itinerary Suits

  • Transit travellers on the overnight bus between Delhi and Manali or Spiti.
  • Business or wedding guests in Dharamshala with a free day.
  • Families with older parents: cut Bhagsu and Naddi and add an extra cafe stop; the temple, kora and church are all gentle.
  • Travellers heading to Bir or Palampur who want one day of McLeod Ganj on the way.

What to Skip When You Only Have a Day

  • Triund: it needs a full day (5-7 hours return) on its own. Do it as a separate day; see our Triund guide.
  • Bir Billing: 2-2.5 hours each way by road. Combine it with an overnight stay.
  • Palampur and Baijnath: a whole day on their own.
  • Dharamshala Skyway (ropeway): it has had suspensions and safety-related closures since August 2025. Check whether it is running on the day before planning around it.

Practical Tips

  • Walk where you can. McLeod Ganj traffic and parking can turn a 2 km taxi ride into 30 minutes in peak season.
  • Carry cash for small cafes and taxis; most shops take UPI.
  • Weather changes fast. Carry a light rain layer from June to September and a warm layer year round. Check the forecast the evening before and again in the morning.
  • Respect monastery etiquette: clockwise around stupas, no pointing feet at altars, ask before photographing monks.

Want More Time?

One day gives you a taste. Two days lets you add Triund or a Kangra loop; our weekend itinerary shows how. Five days covers the whole valley; see our five-day Kangra Valley itinerary. For stays close to everything, look at McLeod Ganj, and for other questions see our FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one day enough for Dharamshala?
One day is enough to see the highlights of McLeod Ganj: the Dalai Lama Temple and kora, Bhagsu, a Tibetan lunch and the Naddi sunset. It is not enough for Triund, Bir or the Kangra temples, which each need their own day.
What should I see in Dharamshala in half a day?
Visit the Tsuglagkhang (Dalai Lama Temple) and Tibet Museum, walk the kora around the complex, and have a Tibetan lunch in McLeod Ganj. If you have an extra hour, add Bhagsu waterfall.
Can I do Triund and McLeod Ganj sightseeing in one day?
Not comfortably. The Triund hike takes 5-7 hours return from Galu Devi or Dharamkot, leaving little time or energy for anything else. Choose one, or stay an extra day.
How much does a one-day sightseeing taxi in Dharamshala cost?
As of 2026, a local sightseeing taxi costs approx. 1,800-3,500 rupees depending on the route and vehicle. A McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Naddi circuit is at the lower end; a lower Dharamshala and Kangra Fort loop is higher.
