The Short Answer

The overnight Volvo is the classic way to get from Delhi to Dharamshala: you board in the evening, sleep (or try to) through Haryana and Punjab, and wake up to the Dhauladhar range. Two choices dominate:

  • HRTC (Himachal government) AC buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate, sold under the Himsuta name for the premium Volvo/Scania coaches. Fixed fares, approx. ₹1,400-1,600 as of 2026, and most end at the Dharamshala bus stand in lower town.
  • Private Volvos from Majnu ka Tilla, Delhi's Tibetan colony. Fares approx. ₹1,000-2,000 depending on season and seat type, and many are marketed as going to McLeod Ganj.

The journey is roughly 475-500 km and takes 10-13 hours. Book 3-7 days ahead for normal weekends and 2-3 weeks ahead for long weekends, Christmas, New Year and May-June.

HRTC vs Private: Which Bus Should You Take?

Our honest take: HRTC is the safer default, especially for first-timers, solo women and anyone who values a predictable schedule. Private buses are worth it when HRTC is sold out, when you want a sleeper berth, or when a genuine McLeod Ganj drop saves you the transfer.

HRTC Himsuta from ISBT Kashmere Gate

What it is

HRTC runs several classes of bus from Delhi to Dharamshala. The premium AC coaches (Volvo and Scania) are branded Himsuta, and there are also cheaper non-AC deluxe and ordinary buses, which take longer and are much less comfortable for an overnight trip. Approx. fares as of 2026:

  • AC Volvo/Scania (Himsuta): approx. ₹1,400-1,600
  • Non-AC deluxe: approx. ₹900-1,000
  • Ordinary: approx. ₹700-750

Booking

  • Online: the official HRTC online booking website or the HRTC app. You choose your seat, pay online and get an e-ticket by SMS and email; show it on your phone.
  • redBus and similar apps also list many HRTC services, which is handy if the official site is slow.
  • At the counter: HRTC has a booking counter at Kashmere Gate ISBT. Fine on weekdays in the low season, risky on Fridays.

Check the destination carefully. Buses may be listed to Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Palampur or Baijnath; a Palampur or Baijnath bus can still drop you at Dharamshala or on the highway nearby, so read the route stops before booking.

At Kashmere Gate

Kashmere Gate ISBT is big and busy. Arrive 30-45 minutes early. Himachal buses depart from bays inside the terminal; the bay number is usually shown on the ticket or at the HRTC enquiry counter. The Kashmere Gate metro station (Yellow, Red and Violet lines) connects directly, which is by far the easiest way to get there in evening traffic.

Private Buses from Majnu ka Tilla

Majnu ka Tilla (also called Aruna Nagar or New Aruna Nagar) is the Tibetan colony on the Yamuna side of north Delhi, and it has been the backpacker departure point for McLeod Ganj for decades. Small travel offices along the colony sell tickets for overnight Volvos, and many of the same buses are listed on booking apps.

How to get there: the nearest metro is Vidhan Sabha on the Yellow Line; from there it is a short auto or e-rickshaw ride. Buses usually load on the main road outside the colony, not inside the narrow lanes. Get there 30 minutes early, and if you have time, eat at one of the Tibetan cafes inside the colony first.

Which operator? We do not name specific companies because operators, buses and drop points change from season to season. Instead:

  • Read the most recent reviews on the booking app (last 1-3 months, not overall ratings).
  • Look at the bus type listed (multi-axle Volvo/Scania vs a generic AC seater).
  • Confirm the exact drop point with the operator by phone after booking.
  • Save the driver or conductor number that the app sends you.

Drop Points: McLeod Ganj vs Dharamshala

This is the single most important detail, and the one most travellers get wrong.

  • Dharamshala bus stand (lower Dharamshala): where HRTC buses terminate. McLeod Ganj is 9 km uphill, about 25-40 minutes. Local HRTC buses run to McLeod Ganj from early morning (approx. ₹20-30), and taxis charge approx. ₹350-500.
  • McLeod Ganj bus stand / main square: the most convenient drop if your stay is in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot. Some HRTC services and many private buses are sold to McLeod Ganj, but whether large buses go all the way up can depend on traffic rules and road conditions in a given season. Ask the operator.
  • Highway drops: some buses heading to Palampur or Baijnath let passengers off on the main road below Dharamshala. Avoid this if you can, especially at 5 am.

From McLeod Ganj bus stand: Bhagsu is about 2 km, Dharamkot about 3 km uphill. Taxis wait at the stand; the local transport guide has typical fares.

A Typical Overnight Trip

Time (approx.)What happens
6-8 pmDeparture from Kashmere Gate or Majnu ka Tilla
7:30-9:30 pmSlow crawl out of Delhi, then the highway north towards Panipat and Karnal
10 pm-midnightDinner stop at a highway dhaba in Haryana
Midnight-4 amAmbala, Punjab plains, often a short tea or toilet stop
4-6 amUna or Hoshiarpur side, the road climbs into Himachal
6-8:30 amKangra, then Dharamshala; McLeod Ganj buses arrive slightly later

Times are indicative and vary by bus, route and traffic. Expect delays on Friday nights out of Delhi and on holiday weekends.

Comfort Tips from People Who Do This Trip Often

  • Seat choice: the front half is smoother on the hill section. Avoid the last row, which often does not recline fully and bounces the most. Left-side window seats get the best mountain views in the morning.
  • AC is cold. Carry a hoodie or shawl even in June. Many buses provide a blanket, but not all.
  • Motion sickness: the last 2-3 hours are winding. Take a tablet around Una if you are prone to it, and do not eat a heavy dhaba meal.
  • No toilets on board. Most buses have no usable toilet. Use the dinner stop and do not be shy about asking the conductor for a stop.
  • Earplugs and an eye mask make a real difference. Some buses play videos or have bright lights.
  • Charge before you board. Charging points may not work.
  • Luggage: large bags go in the hold. Keep valuables, medicines and a warm layer in a day bag at your seat.
  • Solo women: HRTC lets you see and choose seats; picking a seat next to another woman or near the front is easy. See our solo female travel guide.
  • Arriving early: hotel check-in is usually noon. Ask your hotel about early check-in, or drop bags and head to a cafe for breakfast. Many places on Jogiwara Road open early; see our McLeod Ganj cafe guide.

The Return Trip: Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj to Delhi

  • HRTC: evening departures from the Dharamshala bus stand reach Delhi Kashmere Gate early the next morning. Some services depart from McLeod Ganj. Book on the HRTC site or app.
  • Private: evening Volvos from McLeod Ganj (with offices around the main square and bus stand) or from lower Dharamshala, usually dropping at Majnu ka Tilla or Kashmere Gate, sometimes with other drop points.
  • Book the return in advance for Sunday and the last day of long weekends. Sunday evening buses fill up first.
  • Getting on in Delhi at dawn: Kashmere Gate metro opens early in the morning; check the current first-train time. Majnu ka Tilla is a short ride from Vidhan Sabha metro.
  • If buses are full: a one-way taxi is approx. ₹10,000-15,000 per car. Our Dharamshala to Delhi taxi guide breaks this down, or you can book a taxi.

Where to Stay After the Bus

If your bus ends at the Dharamshala bus stand and you want to rest before exploring, a hotel in Dharamshala town means no extra transfer. If you want to be in the middle of things, stay near the McLeod Ganj main square so you can walk from the bus. Browse hotels here, and check our FAQ for other common questions.
