Temple Road runs from the main square down to the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the Dalai Lama Temple. It is the busiest street in town and has some of the best cafes for a pause between sights.

Common Ground Cafe (Temple Road). The long-standing favourite of remote workers: reliable WiFi, good coffee and a relaxed room where nobody minds a laptop. If you need to send files or take a call, this is the safest bet in the centre. Arrive in the morning on weekends, when it fills up.

Namgyal Cafe (Temple Road, near the Tsuglagkhang Complex). Run by the Namgyal Monastery community, it serves Tibetan bread, thenthuk and shapaley, plus pizzas. A natural stop after the kora walk or a visit to the temple.

Moonpeak Espresso. Serious about coffee: they source and roast their own beans. The space is small, so it is better for a coffee and a conversation than a long work session. If you care about espresso, start here.

Illiterati Books and Coffee. A bookshop-cafe with possibly the best view in McLeod Ganj over the valley. The coffee is good, the cake is better, and you can browse second-hand books while you wait. It is popular, so it can be crowded and is not the place for a three-hour laptop session in peak season.

Jogiwara Road: Momos, Pizza and Sunset Terraces

Jogiwara Road branches off the main square and has the densest strip of cafes and Tibetan kitchens.

Tibet Kitchen (main square / Jogiwara Road). A long-running sit-down restaurant with a broad Tibetan menu: thenthuk, shapta and momos, plus some Bhutanese dishes. If you want one solid Tibetan meal in town, this is it.

Peace Cafe (Jogiwara Road area). Tiny and simple, popular for thukpa, thenthuk and momos. Expect to share a table and to pay very little.

Shiva Cafe (above the Bhagsu waterfall). A long-running hillside cafe with painted walls, cushions and views back down the gorge, reached by a rough 20-30 minute climb above the falls. It is a classic sunset spot. Opening days vary by season, so ask in the village if it is the main reason for your walk, and do not climb back down in the dark without a torch. Dharamkot, about 3 km above McLeod Ganj, is the quietest of the three areas and has the best mountain views.
