In short: a dorm bed in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot costs from about ₹350 to ₹700 a night, a basic private room in a guesthouse about ₹700 to ₹1,300, and a simple budget hotel about ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, plus taxes and fees. Bhagsu and Dharamkot have the most hostels and cheap guesthouses, McLeod Ganj has budget hotels within walking distance of everything, and lower Dharamshala is best for late arrivals, the bus stand and cricket days.

Private rooms under about ₹1,300

The same room can cost very different amounts on different sites on the same day: goSTOPS Mall Road was ₹1,058 on MakeMyTrip and ₹1,944 on EaseMyTrip. Always compare the final price with taxes on two or three sites, or ask the property directly.

"From" prices are for the cheapest bed, usually in the biggest mixed dorm. Female-only and smaller dorms cost more.

Well-reviewed budget hotels on Tripadvisor

Tripadvisor's McLeod Ganj budget list did not show prices, but two good-value budget hotels stood out on reviews: Hotel Shivani International (4.5 from 496 reviews) and Hotel Asian Plaza (4.2 from 313 reviews). Check their current rates on a booking site.

Dorm Bed or Private Room?

• Dorm bed (₹350–700): cheapest by far, and the easiest way to meet trekking partners for Triund. Bring earplugs and a padlock; check whether blankets are enough in winter.
• Private room in a hostel (₹1,000–2,000): many hostels in Bhagsu and Dharamkot have private doubles, sometimes with a balcony and view, with the hostel's cafe and common areas.
• Guesthouse or homestay room (₹700–1,300): usually the best value for couples. Rooms are simple, hosts are local, and food is often home-cooked.
• Budget hotel (₹1,000–2,000): more likely to have road access, parking, a front desk and a heater, which matters for families and winter trips.

What the Total Really Costs

Before you book, check what the headline price leaves out:

• Taxes and fees: platforms add them at the last step. On the rates we saw they added about 5–6%.
• Heater charges: from November to March some budget places charge ₹200–500 a night extra for a room heater.
• Hot water: ask whether it is a geyser in the room or solar water that runs out by evening.
• Breakfast: "room only" is the norm at the cheapest rates; breakfast can add ₹150–300 per person.
• Parking: many McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot stays have no parking at all; paid lots cost extra per day.
• Steps and road access: a cheap room 150 steps down a lane is hard work with luggage. Check the last stretch on the map.
• Cancellation: the cheapest rates are often non-refundable. A free-cancellation rate a little higher is worth it in the monsoon, when roads close.

When Budget Rooms Are Cheapest

• Cheapest: July and August (monsoon), and weekdays in January and February.
• Most expensive: May and June, October, Christmas to New Year, Indian long weekends, and days when there is a match at the HPCA Stadium.
• Weekends vs weekdays: Friday and Saturday nights cost noticeably more, especially for visitors driving up from Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi.
