How Much Does a Dharamshala Trip Cost?

A 3-day trip to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj from Delhi costs roughly ₹5,000-8,000 per person for a backpacker, ₹13,000-21,000 per person for a mid-range traveller and ₹30,000-50,000 or more per person for a comfort trip, including return transport from Delhi. The two things that swing your budget most are how you travel from Delhi (overnight bus vs flight) and where you sleep (dorm vs boutique hotel). Food and local activities are comparatively cheap.

Everything below is based on approx. prices as of 2026 for typical travel outside the Christmas and New Year week. Prices rise in peak periods (May-June, October, long weekends) and drop in the monsoon and in January-February.

Ways to Cut Costs Without Ruining the Trip

  1. Take the overnight bus one or both ways. It saves a hotel night as well as airfare.
  2. Travel midweek. Hotel rates and crowds are lower from Sunday to Thursday.
  3. Stay in Bhagsu or Dharamkot if you are on a tight budget and do not mind walking.
  4. Eat where the monks and locals eat. Small Tibetan kitchens serve generous bowls for a fraction of cafe prices.
  5. Do Triund as a day hike instead of an overnight camping package if you are fit and the weather is good.
  6. Share taxis. For sightseeing, a full-day car split between four is often cheaper than several short rides.
  7. Book direct. Booking through a local platform like ours can work out cheaper than large travel sites; see our FAQ for how bookings work.

How the Season Changes Your Budget

The same 3-day trip can cost very different amounts depending on when you go. Here is how prices typically move through the year, as of 2026:

PeriodHotel pricesTransportNotes
Mid-March to AprilModerateNormalGood value, pleasant weather, rhododendrons in bloom
May to JuneHighestBuses and flights fill earlySchool holidays from the plains; book weeks ahead
July to mid-SeptemberLowest, often 20-40 percent offDelays possibleMonsoon discounts, but plan for rain and landslides
Late September to NovemberHigh in October, easing in NovemberNormalClear skies, great trekking, festival long weekends push prices up
December to FebruaryLow, except the New Year weekNormalCold; ask about heater charges

If your dates are flexible, early November and March are often the sweet spot: good weather, lower rates and fewer crowds. Our best time to visit Dharamshala guide compares every month in detail.

Stretching It to 5 Days

Adding two more days does not double the cost, because your biggest expense (return transport from Delhi) is already paid. For a mid-range traveller, each extra day adds roughly ₹3,000-5,000 per person: one more hotel night at half of a shared room, food, and a day trip. Good ways to fill extra days include a Bir Billing paragliding day, the Kareri Lake trek, Kangra Fort and Masroor temples, or a slow day in the cafes of Dharamkot. A 5-day mid-range trip from Delhi typically lands at approx. ₹19,000-30,000 per person.

Hidden Costs to Plan For

  • Peak-season surge around Christmas, New Year and long weekends: hotel rates can double.
  • Room heaters in winter: some hotels add approx. ₹300-500 per night.
  • Parking in McLeod Ganj if you self-drive.
  • Porters or pony hire if you need help with luggage to hillside hotels.
  • ATM availability: McLeod Ganj has ATMs, but they occasionally run dry on busy weekends. Carry some cash for small cafes and stalls, though UPI is widely accepted.
