Dharamshala to Delhi Taxi 2026: Fares by Car, Routes, Drive Time & Booking Tips

A one-way taxi from Dharamshala to Delhi costs from ₹10,000 in a Swift Dzire or Etios sedan (up to 4 passengers) and ₹13,000 in an Ertiga or Innova (up to 6), as a fixed fare that includes the AC car and the driver allowance; tolls, parking and any Delhi entry tax are extra. The trip is about 480 km and takes 10-12 hours with meal breaks, usually via Una and Chandigarh or via Pathankot and Jalandhar (NH44). Leave by 5-6 am to reach Delhi in the afternoon, before the evening traffic.

Taxi Fares by Vehicle (2026)

What the fare includes: the air-conditioned car, an experienced hill driver and the driver allowance for the trip. What it does not include: toll charges on the highways, parking fees and any Delhi state entry tax that applies to an outside-registered commercial vehicle. Tolls and taxes are paid on the way and settled at actuals, so ask the driver to keep the receipts.

If you need a bigger or premium vehicle, or a pickup somewhere unusual, ask when you book and we will quote it. We do not list fixed fares for those, so we will not guess here.

One way vs round trip

The fares above are fixed one-way fares, which is what most people need: you are leaving the hills and catching a flight or train in Delhi, or heading home. If you want the car and driver to stay with you, for example a few days in Delhi and then back to Himachal, or a multi-day Himachal circuit, that is quoted separately based on days and distance. Which Route Does the Taxi Take?

Drivers choose between two main routes depending on traffic, roadworks, weather and the stops you want. Both work; neither is dramatically shorter.

Route 1: Via Kangra, Una and Chandigarh

Dharamshala - Kangra - Ranital or Dehra - Amb - Una - Nangal - Anandpur Sahib - Kiratpur Sahib - Ropar - Chandigarh area - Ambala - Karnal - Panipat - Delhi

• The first 3-4 hours are two-lane hill and valley road through Kangra and Una district, the slowest part of the trip.
• After Una you drop into Punjab along the Sutlej side, then join the fast highway towards Chandigarh and Ambala.
• Best if you want to stop at Anandpur Sahib, eat lunch at Una, or drop someone in Chandigarh on the way.
• A variant via Gagret and Hoshiarpur joins the plains further west and is preferred by some drivers when the Una side is congested.

Route 2: Via Pathankot and Jalandhar (NH44)

Dharamshala - Gaggal - Shahpur - Nurpur - Pathankot - Jalandhar - Ludhiana - Ambala - Karnal - Panipat - Delhi

• Less hill driving: you are on the plains after Pathankot, then on the NH44 highway almost all the way to Delhi.
• Fewer bends, which helps if anyone in the car gets motion sickness.
• Useful if you want to pass Kangra Airport at Gaggal or drop someone at Pathankot station.

Alternative when the Una road is blocked

In the monsoon or during roadworks, drivers sometimes switch to Hamirpur - Bilaspur - Kiratpur Sahib on the newer four-lane before rejoining the Chandigarh road. It is a little longer but can save hours when there is a landslide or a jam near Una. Your driver will check road conditions the night before; you can too.

How Long Does It Take? A Typical Day

Pure driving time on a clear day can be 9-10 hours; with breakfast, lunch and tea stops, plan on 10-12 hours. Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and holiday weekends are slower at the Delhi end.

Best Time to Leave

• Leave at 5-6 am. You finish the hill section in daylight with little traffic, and you reach Delhi before the evening rush. This fits well with checking out of your McLeod Ganj hotel the night before.
• Avoid late-evening departures. Night driving on the hill section is tiring for the driver and slower in fog or rain, and arriving in Delhi in the middle of the night leaves you with few options. If you must travel late, discuss it when booking.
• Winter fog (roughly December-January) can slow the Punjab and Haryana plains in the early morning. A slightly later start, around 7 am, sometimes gets you through clearer air.

Catching a flight or train in Delhi?

Do not plan a same-day flight from Delhi airport that leaves before about 8-9 pm. A landslide, an accident on the highway or Delhi traffic can easily add 2-3 hours. If your flight is in the afternoon, travel the day before and stay near the airport, or fly out of Kangra Airport at Gaggal instead.

Good Places to Stop

Taxi vs Bus vs Flight vs Train

When a taxi makes sense

• You are 3-6 people. Per head, a full sedan or SUV costs about ₹2,200-2,500, close to a Volvo seat plus the local transfer at both ends, and you get door-to-door service.
• You have elders, kids or lots of luggage. No bus stand at dawn, no luggage hold, stops whenever you need them. See our guides for families with kids and senior citizens.
• You are staying high up. Buses cannot reach most lanes in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot; a taxi picks you up at your hotel or the nearest road point.
• You want to break the journey in Chandigarh, Anandpur Sahib or Amritsar.

When something else is better

• Short on time: a flight from Kangra takes a fraction of the time if seats are available; weather delays are possible. Pre-book a Dharamshala to Gaggal transfer for the short drive.
• You prefer trains: taxi to Pathankot or Chakki Bank (about 90 km, 2.5-3 hrs) or to Amb Andaura in Una district (about 105 km, 3-3.5 hrs) for the Vande Bharat, then rail to Delhi. Check current train timings on IRCTC.

Splitting the Trip

Ten to twelve hours is a long day in a car. Two good ways to break it:

• Via Chandigarh. Take a Dharamshala to Chandigarh taxi (240 km, 5.5-6.5 hrs, from ₹6,000), spend a night, then continue to Delhi by train, bus or car the next day. Our Chandigarh to Dharamshala guide has the route in detail.
• Via Amritsar. A Dharamshala to Amritsar taxi (200 km, 5-6 hrs, from ₹5,500) lets you see the Golden Temple, then take a train or flight to Delhi.

Practical Tips for the Drive

• Book at least 24 hours ahead, and a few days ahead in May-June, October and over Christmas and New Year. Our best time to visit guide shows when demand peaks.
• Share your exact pickup point. Fares are quoted from Dharamshala; pickups in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Dharamkot or Naddi are common, but Dharamkot and upper Bhagsu have narrow lanes, so the car may wait at the nearest road point.
• Share your exact Delhi drop point (airport terminal, railway station, hotel or home) and whether you need it by a fixed time.
• Confirm the vehicle and driver details the evening before. We send them once the booking is confirmed.
• Carry some cash for tolls and parking, plus water and snacks for the hill section.
• Motion sickness: sit in front, eat light before the hill section, and ask the driver to take the NH44 route if anyone in the group is prone to it.
• Seat belts on, all the way. Highway speeds in Punjab and Haryana are high.
• Check road conditions before leaving in the monsoon or after heavy snowfall upstream; your driver will advise on the safer route.
