Shimla to Dharamshala is roughly 310 to 330 km by road and takes about 8 to 10 hours of driving depending on your route and stops. There is no rail link or direct flight between the two, so the road is your only option. The journey is long but scenic — you cross the heart of Himachal through apple country, river valleys and small hill towns before the Dhauladhar range appears ahead.

This guide covers the two practical routes, bus and taxi options, costs as of 2026, and how to break the journey if you want a more relaxed trip. If you are planning a wider Himachal circuit, our Delhi to Dharamshala, Bir and Manali itinerary maps the whole loop.

Two Routes Compared

RouteDistance (approx.)Drive time (approx.)Road qualityNotes
Via Mandi and Hamirpur (NH-21 / NH-154)310–320 km8–10 hrsMostly national highway; winding near MandiMost common route; HRTC buses use this
Via Bilaspur and Una330–350 km9–11 hrsWider plains section but longerUseful if Mandi road is blocked by landslides

This is the standard route and the one all HRTC buses take. From Shimla you descend through Solan and Bilaspur to Sundernagar, then continue to Mandi (the junction town of Himachal). From Mandi the road turns north-west through Jogindernagar, Baijnath (ancient Shiva temple worth a 15-minute stop), Palampur (tea gardens), and finally up to Dharamshala.

The Shimla-to-Mandi leg (about 150 km) takes 4 to 5 hours and follows the Sutlej and then the Beas river valleys. The Mandi-to-Dharamshala leg (about 160 to 170 km) takes another 4 to 5 hours because the road narrows and curves through the Kangra Valley.

Key stops:

  • Sundernagar (about 120 km from Shimla): Small lake, good for a tea break and a stretch.
  • Mandi (about 150 km): Lunch stop. The town sits at the confluence of the Beas and Suketi rivers and has several dhabas near the bus stand. The Rewalsar lake detour (about 25 km each way) is worth it if you have time.
  • Baijnath (about 230 km): The 9th-century Shiva temple is right on the highway. A 15-minute walk-through is all it takes.
  • Palampur (about 260 km): Kangra tea country. The tea gardens are beautiful between April and November.

Route 2: Via Bilaspur and Una

If the Mandi road is blocked (monsoon landslides are common in July and August), this route swings south-east through Bilaspur, then across the plains via Una and Amb Andaura, before climbing to Dharamshala from the south. It is about 20 to 30 km longer and the plains section is flat and hot, but the road is wider and less landslide-prone. This route is more useful as a fallback than a first choice.

By HRTC Bus

HRTC runs 2 to 4 direct buses daily from Shimla (Tutikandi or old bus stand) to Dharamshala. A few continue to McLeod Ganj. Options include:

TypeFare (approx.)TimeComfort
Ordinary₹500–6009–11 hrsBasic seats, frequent stops
Semi-deluxe₹650–8008–10 hrsBetter seats, fewer stops
AC Volvo₹900–1,2008–9 hrsPushback seats, limited stops

The earliest buses depart around 5 to 6 am and reach Dharamshala by 3 to 4 pm. This is the best departure if you want to arrive in daylight. There are usually one or two evening departures as well, arriving late at night, which we do not recommend for first-time visitors.

Check the HRTC online booking portal for current schedules, or buy tickets at the Shimla bus stand counter. Seats fill up fast on weekends and holidays — book a day in advance if possible.

By Taxi

A one-way taxi from Shimla to Dharamshala costs approx. ₹7,000 to ₹10,000 for a sedan and ₹9,000 to ₹13,000 for an SUV as of 2026. The drive takes 8 to 9 hours with stops. Taxis are available through the Shimla taxi union, hotel desks, and online aggregators.

The taxi option makes sense if you are in a group of 3 to 4 people (cost splits to about ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 per head) or if you want to stop at Mandi, Baijnath, or Palampur on the way. Agree on stops before you start so the driver does not rush.

You can also book a taxi through us for the reverse journey or for onward travel from Dharamshala.

Driving Your Own Car

The Shimla-to-Dharamshala drive is scenic but tiring — 8 to 10 hours of mountain roads with hundreds of turns. Tips:

  • Start by 6 am. You want to clear the Shimla suburbs before the morning traffic and reach Dharamshala before dark.
  • Fuel up at Shimla or Sundernagar. Petrol pumps exist in Mandi and Palampur too, but the gap between Sundernagar and Mandi has limited options.
  • The Mandi town bypass saves 20 to 30 minutes of crawling through the old market. Follow signs for the Mandi bypass towards Jogindernagar.
  • Night driving is strongly discouraged. The road between Mandi and Dharamshala has unlit stretches, sharp drops, and occasional stray animals. Pull over and stay somewhere if you fall behind schedule.
  • Monsoon warning: Rockfall zones between Sundernagar and Mandi are active in July and August. Check the HRTC or BRO (Border Roads Organisation) alerts before starting.

Breaking the Journey

If 10 hours of driving sounds like too much, break the trip with an overnight stay:

  • Mandi (halfway point): Several budget hotels near the bus stand. Visit Rewalsar lake in the evening.
  • Palampur (about 2 hours before Dharamshala): Stay in a tea estate bungalow and arrive fresh in Dharamshala the next morning. Read our Palampur travel guide for where to stay and what to see.
  • Bir (detour from Baijnath, about 3 hours before Dharamshala): If you plan to include Bir Billing in your trip, stay a night there and continue to Dharamshala next day. See our Bir travel guide.

Shimla + Dharamshala: How to Combine Them

If you are visiting both Shimla and Dharamshala on the same trip, the most efficient loop from Delhi is: Delhi → Shimla (2 to 3 nights) → Dharamshala (2 to 3 nights) → Delhi. The Delhi-to-Shimla leg is about 350 km (7 to 8 hours or an overnight bus), and Dharamshala-to-Delhi is about 475 km (10 to 12 hours or an overnight Volvo). Our Chandigarh to Dharamshala guide is useful if you drive back via Chandigarh.
