Shimla in December 2026: Christmas, New Year & Snow (Kufri, Narkanda)

Short answer: Shimla in December is cold, festive and crowded, but snow is not guaranteed. In three of the last four winters the town’s first snow came only in January or February; December 2024 was the exception. Christmas centres on Christ Church on the Ridge, New Year brings heavy traffic and full hotels, and the natural ice skating rink usually opens in the first half of December if nights are cold enough. For a better chance of snow, look to Kufri and Narkanda on the road above Shimla, or come in January.

Will it snow in Shimla in December 2026?

Nobody can tell you yet. Snow in Shimla town depends on western disturbances that the Meteorological Centre in Shimla can only forecast a few days ahead. What we can give you is the record of recent winters.

What this means for you: in three of the last four winters, a Christmas or New Year trip to Shimla town would have seen no fresh snow. In December 2025, PTI reported that snow had "eluded" Shimla and Manali, and the Shimla Hotel Association put weekend occupancy at only 50 to 60 per cent (ETV Bharat, 22 December 2025). The ice rink has suffered too: the 2024-25 season had over 50 per cent fewer sessions than the year before (The Tribune, 16 March 2025).

If snow is the main reason for your trip, January and early February have given better odds in recent years, and the higher places on the road above Shimla (Kufri, Fagu, Narkanda) get snow more often than the town. How is Christmas celebrated in Shimla?

The heart of Christmas is Christ Church on the Ridge. In 2024 The Tribune reported that "thousands" of tourists and locals visited on 24 and 25 December, people of every faith among them. The church’s season runs through December: carol-singing rounds, a Christmas tree celebration for children, a candlelight service, then carols, Bible readings and a langar (community meal) on Christmas Day.

Service times for 2026 have not been published. If you want to attend a service rather than just visit, ask at the church a day or two before; expect long queues and a packed Ridge on the evening of 24 December.

From Christmas Eve, the Shimla Winter Carnival has filled the Ridge with folk dance, music and stalls. In 2025 it ran for nine days, from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day, with traffic and police arrangements from 24 December to 2 January (PTI, 23 December 2025). It is organised by the district administration and the Municipal Corporation; the 2026 edition had not been announced when we checked on 26 October.

What is New Year in Shimla like?

Busy. The week between Christmas and New Year is the peak of Shimla’s winter season, and most traffic from Chandigarh and Delhi enters through the Shoghi barrier on the Kalka side. In the ten days before 27 December 2023, over 1.65 lakh vehicles entered Shimla through Shoghi (The Tribune, 28 December 2023).

Police run a "one-minute" traffic plan in the holiday rush: vehicles from Solan are held briefly at Shoghi and released in turns, which means queues at the entry point but fewer jams inside the city. Extra parking is opened for the carnival (The Tribune, 28 December 2023). When it snows, the roads beyond Dhalli towards Kufri and Narkanda are the first to close: on 23 January 2026 the Shimla-Kufri road was shut and vehicles were stuck near the Dhalli tunnel (ETV Bharat).

Our advice for New Year:

1. Arrive by 30 December, in daylight.
2. Park once and walk. The centre around the Mall and the Ridge is best explored on foot.
3. Book rooms and any New Year dinner well ahead. HPTDC, the state tourism corporation, publishes Christmas and New Year packages on its website.
4. If you hate crowds, spend New Year somewhere quieter and visit Shimla in the second week of January.

When does the Shimla ice skating rink open?

Usually in the first half of December, if the nights are cold and clear enough. The rink is a natural one, made by flooding the ground and letting it freeze overnight, so it depends entirely on the weather. PTI reported on 3 December 2025:

The club sets its rules for visitors each year, so ask at the rink about day sessions and skate hire. 2026-27 opening date: not announced as of 26 October. Sessions only happen on mornings and evenings when the ice is good, so mild weather can mean days with no skating at all.

Kufri and Narkanda: is there snow and skiing in December?

Sometimes snow, rarely good skiing in December. Both sit on the highway that climbs east from Shimla through Dhalli.

Hatu Peak, above Narkanda, is the classic viewpoint in this area; ask locally whether the road up is open before setting out in winter.

In a dry December, Kufri is just a cold hilltop. In a snowy week it is jammed, and the road beyond Dhalli may close. Go early in the morning, use a local driver who knows winter roads, and do not drive these roads after dark when they ice over.

Is the Kalka-Shimla toy train running in December 2026?

Partly, as far as we could confirm; check before you book.

• On 30 August 2026, ThePrint reported that soil had washed away near Bridge No. 57 between Koti and Gumman, in Solan district, leaving the track hanging. Ten trains were cancelled.
• On 5 September 2026, NewKerala reported that trains were running again between Dharampur and Shimla only, with buses linking Kalka and Dharampur, while repairs near Parwanoo continued. Railways aimed to restore the full line before the peak tourist season.
• We found no report of full Kalka-Shimla through-running after early September. Check the live status on Indian Railways (NTES) or IRCTC before you plan around the train.

When the line is fully open, the 96 km narrow-gauge run from Kalka takes about 5.5 to 6 hours through 103 tunnels (Shimla district administration). In winter, the train is slower than the road but avoids the Shoghi queues on peak days. We found no announcement of a 2026 Christmas holiday special as of 26 October.

How do I reach Shimla?

Combining Shimla and Dharamshala in winter? The Mandi-Hamirpur route is long and runs mostly through lower valleys. Start early: winter daylight is short, and you want to be off the hill roads before dark. We can arrange a taxi from McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala for the transfer: book a taxi. How cold is Shimla in December, and what should I pack?

Cold enough for proper winter clothes. Nights near or below freezing are normal in a snowy spell: Shimla dropped to minus 1.1°C after the snow of 28 December 2020 (The Tribune). On sunny days the Ridge feels pleasant at midday, then cold fast after 4 pm.

• Thermal layers, a fleece and a down or heavy jacket
• Woollen cap, gloves, scarf
• Shoes with good grip: shaded lanes and steps ice over in the mornings
• Sunglasses and sunscreen for bright days
• Power bank: cold drains phone batteries, and snow can cut electricity (snowfall in January 2023 affected 487 transformers, per The Tribune)
• A buffer day in your plan in case roads close
