McLeod Ganj in December 2026: Snow, Weather & What is Open
December in McLeod Ganj means cold nights, sunny days and the clearest Dhauladhar views of winter. Snow in town is occasional and more likely late in the month. Here is the week-by-week weather, what stays open, how to pick a warm room and how to handle the Christmas and New Year rush.

Short answer: December in McLeod Ganj is cold, mostly dry and very clear. Days are usually around 9 to 15°C in the sun, nights drop to roughly 0 to 5°C, and by the last week a frosty, below-zero night is normal. Snow on the Dhauladhar peaks above town is almost certain. Snow in McLeod Ganj itself is occasional: it is uncommon before late December, and January and early February give much better odds. Triund and the upper slopes are far more likely to be white. The first three weeks are quiet and easy to book; from about 23 December to 2 January the town is packed and rates rise sharply.
Coming for the holidays? See our Christmas in Dharamshala guide and our New Year in McLeod Ganj guide for the festive week itself.
If you want clear mountain views, quiet streets and cosy cafés, December is a good month. If your only goal is snow underfoot in town, look at January instead, or plan a day up towards Triund or Naddi.
This guide covers the weather week by week, what is open and closed, how to stay warm, Christmas and New Year, what to pack, things to do and getting here in winter. For the full year, see our best time to visit Dharamshala guide. For January, see our Dharamshala in January guide.
December Weather, Week by Week
McLeod Ganj sits at roughly 2,000 m, about 600 m above lower Dharamshala, so it is usually 3 to 5°C colder than the lower town. Dharamkot and Naddi, a little higher again, are colder still. The figures below are our approximations for McLeod Ganj, based on long-term normals for Dharamshala town and what we see living here.
| Period | Day (approx.) | Night (approx.) | Snow chance in McLeod Ganj | Crowds | Room rates |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–10 December | 11–16°C | 3–6°C | Very low | Quiet | Low season, easy to bargain |
| 11–20 December | 9–14°C | 1–5°C | Low | Quiet, some weekend visitors | Low season |
| 21–31 December | 7–13°C | −1 to 4°C | Low to moderate (a spell is possible, not likely) | Very busy from about 23 Dec | Peak, often 1.5 to 2.5 times normal |
A few patterns hold most years:
- December is one of the driest months. Long-term averages put December rainfall for Dharamshala at only around 35 mm, so most days are sunny.
- Snow comes with western disturbances. A weather system moves in, it rains in the valley and snows on the higher slopes for one to three days, then the sky clears. If one arrives in the last week of December, McLeod Ganj may get a light covering. It often melts in town within a day.
- The sun does the heating. Between about 10 am and 3 pm a sunny terrace can feel warm. Once the sun drops behind the ridge, the temperature falls fast. Sunset is around 5:15 to 5:30 pm.
- Mornings can be hazy or foggy in the valley below, usually clearing by mid-morning.
Will It Snow in McLeod Ganj in December?
Sometimes, but not every year: snow in McLeod Ganj itself is occasional in December and uncommon before about 20 December, so probably not during a short trip, though it does happen. Here is the picture by altitude:
- Lower Dharamshala (around 1,400 m): settled snow is very rare.
- McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu (around 2,000 m): occasional. Before about 20 December it is uncommon. In the last ten days it becomes possible, and some years bring a festive dusting around Christmas or New Year. Many years bring none at all in December.
- Dharamkot and Naddi (around 1,900 to 2,100 m): a little more often than McLeod Ganj, and snow lingers longer in shaded spots.
- Gallu Devi and the Triund trail: snow patches are possible from mid to late December, more so after a storm.
- Triund ridge (about 2,850 m): the most reliable snow you can reach in a day in December, though early in the month it can still be bare.
- The Dhauladhar peaks: white all winter. You see them from almost anywhere in town, even when there is no snow underfoot.
So plan December around views, calm and cafés, and treat snow in town as a bonus. If you see a forecast for rain in the valley and snow above 2,000 m, keep the following clear morning free and head up to Naddi or towards Triund. Our winter snowfall guide has the full altitude-by-altitude breakdown.
What Is Open and What Is Closed
McLeod Ganj does not shut down in winter. Most of what you came for runs through December.
| Place or activity | December status |
|---|---|
| Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple) | Open; check timings locally on the day |
| Monasteries and Tibetan institutions | Open; ceremonies and teachings follow their own calendar |
| Bhagsu waterfall | Open, low flow, quiet walk |
| Naddi viewpoint | Open; very cold at dawn |
| Cafés and restaurants | Most open; some smaller places shorten hours or close for a few weeks, more so in Dharamkot and Bhagsu |
| Guesthouses | Most open; a few small family places close or run fewer rooms in deep winter |
| Triund trek | Usually open in clear weather; cold, possibly icy above Magic View; can be closed after snow or weather warnings |
| Treks above 3,000 m (Snowline, Indrahar, Laka) | Not for winter visitors; restricted by district orders in recent winters |
| Kareri Lake | Not a December trek |
| Kangra valley sights | Open, and noticeably warmer |
Triund in December. Early December can be one of the nicest times on the trail: dry, sharp views and cold air. Later in the month, ice can form on the steep section above Magic View, and nights at the campsite are well below freezing. In January 2026 the Kangra district administration banned trekking above 3,000 m and made prior permission from the SP Kangra office mandatory for Triund and Kareri, with permissions cancelled automatically when a weather warning is issued. Similar orders have been issued in past winters, so expect something like it again. Ask at the forest checkpost, your stay or a permitted operator before you go, and carry ID and cash for the entry fee, plus an extra ₹500 in case the reported (unconfirmed) refundable waste deposit is collected. Details are in our Triund trek guide.
The ropeway. The Dharamshala Skyway between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj was suspended after a landslide near one of its towers in August 2025. Listed hours are 9:30 am to 6 pm, but it was closed for maintenance until 30 October 2026 and winter weather can stop it, so check the current status before you go. Our Skyway guide has the details. Taxis and local buses run every day.
Heating, Hot Water and Power Cuts
This is the part that makes or breaks a December trip. Most older buildings in McLeod Ganj were not built for cold: concrete walls, single glazing and no central heating. A room that is lovely in October can be miserable at 2°C.
What to ask before you book:
- Is there a room heater, and is it included? Ask whether it is an oil-filled radiator, a blower or a fan heater, and whether there is an extra charge. Oil-filled heaters are quieter and keep warmth longer.
- Is hot water available all day? Solar water heaters can run lukewarm after a cloudy day. An electric geyser in the bathroom is more reliable.
- How many blankets or quilts? Ask for a heavy razai or an electric blanket if you feel the cold.
- Which way does the room face? South-facing rooms get winter sun and stay warmer. A room that never sees the sun stays cold all day.
- Is the room insulated? Wooden floors, double windows, carpets and curtains make a real difference. Ask for photos if you are unsure.
- What happens in a power cut? Ask whether there is power backup, and whether it runs heaters or only lights.
Power cuts happen in winter, especially after snow or high wind. Most are short, but some last hours. Keep your phone charged, carry a power bank and a small torch, and do not rely on a heater as your only warmth: pack a proper jacket and thermals for the room too.
Use our Dharamshala hotels finder to compare stays, and our mountain-view stays if you want to wake up to the snow peaks. Not sure which area to pick? Where to stay in Dharamshala compares McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot, Bhagsu, Naddi and the lower town. In December, a stay in central McLeod Ganj means short walks to cafés after dark, while Naddi and Dharamkot give bigger views but colder nights and quieter evenings.
Christmas and New Year in McLeod Ganj
The last week of December is a different trip from the rest of the month.
Christmas is low-key and friendly. St. John in the Wilderness church, in the forest between Forsyth Ganj and McLeod Ganj, usually holds a service. Cafés put up lights and some run special menus. It feels communal rather than commercial.
New Year is the busiest week of the whole winter. Visitors drive up from Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi, the McLeod Ganj roads jam in the evenings and parking becomes very hard to find. Some stays hold bonfire dinners or parties on 31 December, and some make them compulsory.
How to handle the festive week:
- Book early. For 23 December to 2 January, book by late October to mid-November. Good rooms are scarce by mid-December.
- Expect minimum stays of two or three nights around Christmas and New Year.
- Read the cancellation terms and check whether a gala dinner is added to the bill.
- Arrive early in the day. Traffic on the Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj road is worst in the late afternoon and evening.
- Walk, do not drive, around McLeod Ganj once you are there.
- Consider the dates either side. 15 to 22 December is quiet, clear and cheaper, with the same mountain views.
Things to Do in December
Watch the Dhauladhar. December skies are among the clearest of the year. Early morning and late afternoon light on the snow peaks is superb. Any rooftop café in McLeod Ganj gives you a front-row seat.
Naddi sunrise. Naddi is a short drive above McLeod Ganj with a wide, open view of the range. Go at dawn on a clear morning, wrapped up properly, and have chai at a stall once the sun hits. See our Naddi destination guide, and combine it with a stop at Dal Lake using our Naddi and Dal Lake guide.
Monasteries and quiet time. Winter is the calmest season around the Tsuglagkhang Complex and the smaller monasteries. Walk the kora path around the complex in the morning sun. Our monasteries and meditation page covers where to go and how to visit respectfully. 10 December, the anniversary of the Dalai Lama's Nobel Peace Prize, is often marked in McLeod Ganj.
Cafés and Tibetan food. December is the month for thukpa, momos, butter tea and long afternoons in sunny windows. Go for lunch rather than late dinners; the streets empty early once it gets cold.
A day hike in the sun. Bhagsu waterfall, the Dharamkot village paths and the walk to Gallu Devi are all good half-day options in December. Start after 9 am and be back before the sun drops.
Triund, if conditions allow. In early or mid December, on a clear day with the trail open, a day hike to Triund gives you the snow wall up close. Go with a local guide if there is any ice, and do not attempt it right after fresh heavy snow.
Go down to the Kangra side. When McLeod Ganj feels cold, the lower valley is often 15 to 20°C by day. Kangra Fort, the Masroor rock-cut temples, the Norbulingka Institute near Sidhbari and the tea gardens at Palampur make an easy day out by taxi.
For a ready-made plan, adapt our Dharamshala 3-day itinerary to winter: keep outdoor time between 10 am and 4 pm and save cafés and indoor sights for the evenings.
What to Pack for McLeod Ganj in December
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Down or insulated jacket | Evenings and mornings are properly cold |
| Thermal innerwear, top and bottom | For sleeping and early starts; rooms can be cold |
| Fleece or wool mid-layer | Layers work better than one thick jumper |
| Woollen cap, gloves, scarf | Wind on the ridge and at viewpoints |
| Thick wool socks and warm slippers | Cold floors in most rooms |
| Shoes with good grip | Steep lanes, frost and occasional ice |
| Microspikes | Only if you plan to hike to Triund late in the month |
| Sunglasses and sunscreen | Winter sun at altitude is strong |
| Lip balm and moisturiser | The air is very dry |
| Power bank and torch | Power cuts, and batteries drain faster in the cold |
| Hot-water bottle | Cheap, light and very effective at night |
Getting There in Winter
By air. Kangra Airport at Gaggal is about 30 to 45 minutes by road from McLeod Ganj. In winter, flights can be delayed, diverted or occasionally cancelled when fog sits over the plains or weather closes in over the hills. Keep a buffer before any onward connection, and do not book a tight same-day international flight out.
By bus. Overnight Volvo buses from Delhi run all winter. Dense fog in Punjab and Haryana can slow them by an hour or more, especially in late December.
By road. The main highway via Kangra stays open all winter, and snow on it is very rare. The roads between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, and up to Naddi and Dharamkot, are steep and shaded. After snowfall they can be icy in the early morning, and the Naddi and Dharamkot roads may be closed to cars for a day or two. If you are not used to hill driving in winter, leave your car at your stay and use a local taxi. Try to arrive by afternoon and avoid driving the hill roads after dark.
