Dalhousie & Khajjiar from Dharamshala: Route, Day Trip or Overnight (2026)
How to do Dalhousie and Khajjiar from Dharamshala: the road route, honest drive times, whether a day trip works, what to see, adding Chamba, and winter road conditions.

Dalhousie is roughly 115–125 km from Dharamshala, about 4 to 4.5 hours by road via Shahpur, Nurpur and Banikhet. Khajjiar, the meadow people call "Mini Switzerland", is another 22–24 km (about 1 hour) beyond Dalhousie. That means a same-day Dharamshala → Dalhousie → Khajjiar → Dharamshala loop is around 280 km and 9 to 10 hours in the car. It is possible, but it is a tiring day where you see Khajjiar for an hour and Dalhousie through a windscreen.
Our honest advice: do it as an overnight (or two nights). Stay one night in Dalhousie or Khajjiar, see Khajjiar in the soft morning light before the crowds, and either return to Dharamshala or continue to Chamba. Below is the full route, a day-trip plan for people who are short on time, what is actually worth seeing, and how winter snow changes everything. Distances, times and costs are approx. as of 2026.

The Route from Dharamshala
The standard route runs Dharamshala → Gaggal → Shahpur → Nurpur → Jassur → Banikhet → Dalhousie. From Dharamshala you drop down past Gaggal and the Kangra Airport, then through Shahpur and Nurpur on the Pathankot–Mandi highway. At Jassur/Chakki side you leave the highway and climb through Banikhet to Dalhousie.
- Dharamshala to Nurpur (approx. 65–70 km): mostly wide highway, 1.5–2 hrs. Nurpur Fort is right on the route if you want a 30-minute stop.
- Nurpur to Banikhet (approx. 35–40 km): the climb begins after the plains-edge stretch near Jassur. 1–1.5 hrs.
- Banikhet to Dalhousie (approx. 8 km): short, steep, busy in season. Banikhet is also where many budget hotels and the turn for Chamba sit.
Fuel up and use an ATM at Dharamshala, Shahpur or Nurpur. Dalhousie and Banikhet have pumps and ATMs, but Khajjiar has limited facilities. For more on hill driving and hiring, see our local transport guide.
Other ways to get there
- Taxi: the easiest option. A private sedan from Dharamshala is approx. ₹5,500–7,000 for a same-day return and approx. ₹8,000–11,000 for two days including Khajjiar, more for an SUV or a Chamba extension. You can book a taxi with us with a fixed quote.
- Bus: HRTC buses run from Dharamshala towards Pathankot; Dalhousie buses run from Pathankot and Banikhet side. Expect at least one change and 5–6 hours. Fine for a relaxed overnight, not for a day trip.
- Self-drive: the road is good by Himachal standards. The last climb and the Dalhousie–Khajjiar stretch are narrow with sharp bends; give way to buses.
Day Trip vs Overnight: Which Should You Do?
| Day trip | One night | Two nights (with Chamba) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total driving | 9–10 hrs | 4.5 hrs each day | 3–4.5 hrs per day |
| Khajjiar time | about 1 hr | half a day, including early morning | half a day |
| Dalhousie sights | quick drive-through, Gandhi Chowk | Mall walk, churches, sunset | Dalhousie + Kalatop or Dainkund |
| Chamba | no | no | yes: Chaugan, Laxmi Narayan temples, museum |
| Who it suits | travellers who only want the photo | most couples and families | slow travellers, heritage lovers |
The day-trip plan (if you must)
- Leave Dharamshala by 6:00–6:30 am. Breakfast at a dhaba near Shahpur or Nurpur.
- Reach Dalhousie around 10:30–11:00 am. Drive straight on to Khajjiar first while the light and traffic are better.
- Khajjiar 11:45 am–1:15 pm. Walk the meadow edge, the Khajji Nag temple, lunch.
- Back to Dalhousie by 2:30 pm. Gandhi Chowk, St John's Church, a short Mall walk.
- Leave by 4:00 pm at the latest to finish most of the mountain driving before dark. Back in Dharamshala around 8:30 pm.
It works, but if anyone in your group gets car sick, choose the overnight.
The overnight plan we actually recommend
- Day 1: leave Dharamshala at 8:00 am, reach Dalhousie by lunch. Afternoon on the Mall Road between Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, St John's Church and sunset. Night in Dalhousie, or drive on to Khajjiar for a quieter night.
- Day 2: Khajjiar early (before 9:30 am the meadow is nearly empty), then either drive back to Dharamshala or continue to Chamba.
What to See in Dalhousie
Dalhousie was founded in the 1850s as a British hill station and named after Lord Dalhousie. It is quieter and more old-fashioned than Shimla or Manali, which is exactly its appeal.
- Gandhi Chowk and the Mall: the main promenade with St John's Church, cafes and shops. The flat walk between Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk is the nicest hour in town.
- St John's Church: a stone church dating from the 1860s at Gandhi Chowk; one of the oldest buildings in Dalhousie.
- St Francis Church near Subhash Chowk, another colonial-era church.
- Panchpula: a small stream and waterfall area with a memorial to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh, about 3 km from the centre. Pleasant but often crowded with snack stalls.
- Satdhara: a spring area on the way to Panchpula; more of a pause than a destination.
- Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary: deodar and pine forest on the Khajjiar road with a gentle walking track. A forest-department fee applies for entry and vehicles (check locally for current rates).
- Dainkund Peak: the highest point around Dalhousie (approx. 2,700 m+), reached by a short walk from the road near Lakkar Mandi, with the Pohlani Mata temple and wide views of the Pir Panjal and Chamba valley. Part of the area is an Air Force station, so stick to the public path and do not photograph installations.
- Subhash Baoli and Bakrota Hills: quiet viewpoints and a walking loop (Bakrota round) above the main town.
Khajjiar: The Meadow
Khajjiar sits at about 2,000 m on a saucer-shaped meadow ringed by deodar forest, with a small lake in the middle. The "Mini Switzerland" sign goes back to 1992, when a Swiss diplomat visited and compared it with his home country. Expectations matter here: the meadow is lovely, but in peak season it is busy with horses, zorbing balls and stalls.
- Khajji Nag Temple: a 12th-century temple dedicated to the serpent deity, with wooden carvings and a golden-topped roof. Worth ten minutes even if you are not religious.
- The meadow and lake: the lake has shrunk over the years and is often marshy; the meadow itself is the attraction. Walk the forest edge rather than staying at the parking end.
- Large Shiva statue: a tall Shiva statue stands near Khajjiar on the approach road and is a popular photo stop.
- Activities: horse rides, zorbing and paragliding-style "joy rides" operate seasonally. Agree prices before you start and check safety gear; these are informal operators.
Insider tip: stay overnight in Khajjiar or come before 9:30 am. Morning mist lifting off the meadow with the deodars behind is the picture everyone wants, and you will have it largely to yourself.
Extending to Chamba
Chamba town is approx. 22–25 km below Khajjiar on the Ravi river and is far richer in history than Dalhousie. If you have the time, it is the best part of this trip.
- Laxmi Narayan Temple Complex: a group of stone shikhara temples, the oldest dating back more than 1,000 years.
- Chaugan: the large grassy town ground, the venue of the Minjar fair in July/August.
- Bhuri Singh Museum: Chamba rumals (embroidered handkerchiefs), Pahari miniature paintings and copper-plate inscriptions. Check timings locally; government museums usually close one day a week.
- Chamunda Devi temple (Chamba) above the town, for views.
Returning to Dharamshala from Chamba
- Via Banikhet and Nurpur: the reliable all-season route, approx. 165–180 km and 5.5–6.5 hrs.
- Via Jot Pass: the shorter mountain road over Jot (approx. 2,400 m) towards Chowari and the Dharamshala side. It is scenic and can save time, but it is narrow, sometimes broken, and closed or risky after snowfall from roughly December to March. Ask your driver and local police about conditions the day before.
Winter: Snow and Road Conditions
Dalhousie and Khajjiar get regular snow between late December and February, and that is when many visitors come. Go in with realistic expectations:
- Banikhet to Dalhousie is usually cleared quickly, but traffic jams on narrow streets with snow can be long.
- Dalhousie to Khajjiar (via Lakkar Mandi) is the stretch most likely to close after heavy snow, sometimes for a few days. Taxis may stop at the point where the road is blocked and you walk or turn back.
- Black ice forms in shaded bends in the mornings and evenings even when roads look clear. Do not drive after dark in winter.
- Chains and 4x4: most local taxis do not carry chains. If you specifically want to see snow at Khajjiar, ask for a driver who knows the route in winter and keep a buffer day.
- Temperatures drop below freezing at night. Many budget hotels have limited heating; ask about heaters and hot water before booking.

Where to Base Yourself
- Coming back to Dharamshala the same day: stay in McLeod Ganj or lower Dharamshala the night before so you can leave early. Our hotels page and Dharamshala destination guide list options close to the Gaggal–Shahpur road.
- Overnight in Dalhousie: stay near Gandhi Chowk or Subhash Chowk to walk the Mall; Banikhet is cheaper but less charming.
- Overnight in Khajjiar: quieter, fewer options, best for the morning meadow.
Fitting It into a Bigger Trip
Dalhousie–Khajjiar works well at the start or end of a Kangra trip because it sits on the Pathankot side. If you are flying out of Amritsar or taking a train from Pathankot, end your trip here. For a full plan of the region, see our 5-day Kangra Valley itinerary and places to visit in Kangra. For general questions, our FAQ covers bookings and transfers.
Practical Tips
- Start early; the Shahpur–Nurpur highway gets heavy truck traffic after 10 am.
- Carry cash. Card acceptance at Khajjiar stalls and small dhabas is patchy.
- Mobile data is decent in Dalhousie, weaker around Kalatop and Khajjiar's edges.
- Plastic bans apply in Himachal; carry a reusable bottle.
- Car sickness is common on the Banikhet climb. Sit in front, eat light.
