Ramlila in Dharamshala 2026: the Dari Ramlila, What to Expect Each Night, and Ravan Dahan

The Dari Ramlila at the Dari Mela Ground has been staged for 18 years and its 2026 run opened on 12 October. What has been staged so far, how the story usually unfolds night by night, how to get there from McLeod Ganj, etiquette, and where to see the big Ravan Dahan on Dussehra, 20 October 2026.

Short answer: Yes. The Ramlila in Dharamshala that is confirmed for 2026 is the Dari Ramlila (धर्मशाला रामलीला, दाड़ी), staged at the Dari Mela Ground in the Dari suburb of Dharamshala, which local news says has run for the past 18 years. The 2026 run was inaugurated on Monday 12 October with "Vishnu Leela", and night 2 (13 October) covered the birth of Shri Ram and the Shravan Kumar story. Nightly start time, the number of nights and any effigy plans have not been published, so ask locally. For the big Ravan Dahan, go to the district Dussehra mela at the Police Ground, Dharamshala, on Tuesday 20 October 2026.

Ramlila is the Ramayana told as open-air theatre: a painted backdrop, a harmonium and dholak, a narrator singing verses, local men and children in glittering crowns and cardboard armour, and a crowd wrapped in shawls that knows every line. In a small hill town it feels less like a show and more like a neighbourhood keeping a promise to itself, year after year. This guide covers what we can confirm about the Dari Ramlila in 2026, how the story usually unfolds over the nights, and how to round it off with the Ravan Dahan on Dussehra.

Is there a Ramlila in Dharamshala in 2026?

Yes. Amar Ujala reported that the Ramlila at the Dari Mela Ground, which has been staged there for the past 18 years, was inaugurated on Monday 12 October 2026. It is the only Dharamshala Ramlila we have been able to confirm from published sources this year.

Where is Dari? Dari is one of Dharamshala's suburbs, alongside Ramnagar, Sidhpur and Sidhbari, in the lower part of town rather than up in McLeod Ganj. The same Dari Mela Ground hosts the April Dhummu Shah fair, which we cover in our guide to melas and fairs in Dharamshala and Kangra.

What is not confirmed. The organising committee, the cast, the nightly start time, how many nights the run lasts, and whether there will be an effigy burning at Dari itself have not been reported. Many Ramlilas in north India run through Navratri and end with Ravan's defeat on Dussehra, but we cannot confirm that this is the plan at Dari. Ask at the ground, a local shop or your hotel reception.

Other Ramlilas around town? There are very likely other neighbourhood Ramlilas in and around Dharamshala, but none had been reported when we wrote this. If you run or know of one, please tell us and we will add it.

What happens on each night?

The Ramayana is a long story, so a Ramlila tells it in instalments, one or two episodes a night. The first two nights at Dari in 2026 have been reported. After that, the table shows the usual sequence in Ramlilas across north India. It is a general guide, not the Dari schedule: committees merge, split and reorder scenes, so check locally what is on each night.

NightEpisodeStatus
Night 1, Mon 12 OctVishnu Leela: Narad Muni grows proud after defeating Kamdev; Vishnu stages an illusory swayamvar to humble him; Narad curses Vishnu to be born as a man and suffer separation from his wifeConfirmed (Amar Ujala)
Night 2, Tue 13 OctBirth of Shri Ram, the Shravan Kumar episode, Sita's birth, births of Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughan, and the slaying of TadkaConfirmed (Amar Ujala)
Following nightsVishwamitra's yagna, Ahalya, and Sita's swayamvar where Ram breaks Shiva's bowUsual sequence, not confirmed for Dari
Kaikeyi's two boons, Ram's exile with Sita and Lakshman, Dasharatha's death, Bharat MilapUsual sequence, not confirmed for Dari
Surpanakha, the golden deer and Ravan's abduction of Sita; Jatayu; ShabariUsual sequence, not confirmed for Dari
Ram meets Hanuman and Sugriv; Hanuman leaps to Lanka and sets it on fireUsual sequence, not confirmed for Dari
Angad's challenge in Ravan's court, the bridge to Lanka, Lakshman struck down and Hanuman's Sanjeevani mountainUsual sequence, not confirmed for Dari
Last nightsKumbhkaran and Meghnad fall, then Ram defeats Ravan; many Ramlilas end with Ram's return and coronationUsual sequence, not confirmed for Dari

Why do audiences love the early nights? Night 2's Shravan Kumar episode was described by Amar Ujala as highly emotional. It is the story of a devoted son carrying his blind parents on pilgrimage, accidentally killed by King Dasharatha's arrow; the grieving parents curse the king to die of grief for his own son. It is the seed of the whole tragedy that follows, and it tends to leave the front rows in tears.

Later nights bring the crowd favourites: Hanuman's antics and Lanka on fire, Angad planting his foot in Ravan's court and daring anyone to move it, and Ravan himself, usually played with huge relish, booming laugh and ten-headed crown.

How do you get to the Dari Ramlila?

  • From Dharamshala town (Kotwali Bazaar area): Dari is a suburb of lower Dharamshala. A local taxi is the simplest option; ask for the Dari Mela Ground (the Dhummu Shah fair ground).
  • From McLeod Ganj: first come down to Dharamshala town, which is about 9 km and roughly 30 minutes by taxi, then continue to Dari. Book a taxi both ways, or agree a waiting charge, because performances run into the night and finding a cab late can be hard. You can book a local taxi with us.
  • Driving yourself: parking around the ground is informal. Arrive early and do not block lanes or gates.
  • Late return: roads up to McLeod Ganj are narrow and dark. Agree the return time with your driver before the show starts.

Tips and etiquette

  • Arrive early if you want a seat. Locals come with mats and shawls and the good spots fill up.
  • It is devotional, not just entertainment. Many in the audience treat it as an act of worship. Stand when others stand for the aarti, and join in the "Jai Shri Ram" if you like.
  • Children perform too. Many Ramlilas cast local children as young Ram, Sita and the vanar army. Applaud generously; nobody expects polished theatre.
  • Use the donation box. Ramlilas are paid for by the community; a small offering helps with costumes, lights and sound.
  • Keep phones low. Photos are usually fine, but do not hold your phone up in front of others, avoid flash and never walk onto the stage area to film.
  • Do not block the stage or the aisles, which the cast often use for entries and exits.
  • Dress warm. October nights are about 12 to 15°C, and you will be sitting still for a couple of hours. Bring a jacket or shawl, and something to sit on.

From Ramlila to Ravan Dahan

In most Ramlila traditions the story builds to Dussehra (Vijayadashami), the day Ram defeats Ravan. In 2026 Sharad Navratri runs from 11 to 19 October, and Dussehra falls on Tuesday 20 October 2026.

Dharamshala's main Ravan Dahan is at the district-level Dussehra mela at the Police Ground, Dharamshala, held from 18 to 24 October 2026. According to Amar Ujala, the Akshay and Lanka effigies are burnt on 19 October, and the towering effigies of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran go up in flames on 20 October, with fireworks. For timings, crowds, parking and what else is on at the mela, read our Dussehra at the Police Ground guide.

Navratri itself is also a big time at the Kangra goddess temples: Chamunda Devi, Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra town and the other shrines draw large crowds of pilgrims through the nine nights. See our Kangra Devi temples guide if you want to combine a temple visit with an evening at the Ramlila.

Where to stay for Ramlila and Dussehra

  • Lower Dharamshala (around Kotwali Bazaar): the most practical base for the Dari Ramlila and the Police Ground mela, with short taxi hops at night.
  • McLeod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj: better if Ramlila is one evening of a longer trip with monasteries, cafés and walks. Plan return taxis in advance.
  • Book ahead for 18 to 21 October, when the Dussehra mela and the Navratri pilgrim crowds overlap.
