Short answer: Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday 8 November 2026. The central government gazetted holiday for Diwali falls on that Sunday, so it does not add a weekday off on its own. The easy plan is a three-day break over Saturday 7 to Monday 9 November, taking Monday (Govardhan Puja) as leave or a restricted holiday if your office allows it. Early November in Dharamshala is dry, clear and cool: sunny days around 16 to 18°C in McLeod Ganj and cold nights of roughly 5 to 7°C. You go for sharp Dhauladhar views, a lit-up bazaar in lower Dharamshala and a calmer festival than on the plains.

Book transport first. Overnight Volvo seats and Delhi–Kangra flights around a Diwali weekend tend to fill up well before rooms do.

Diwali 2026 Dates

DayDateNotes
DhanterasFriday 6 NovemberBusy shopping evening in the bazaars
Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi)Saturday 7 NovemberSome calendars, including the central government restricted list, mark Naraka Chaturdashi on 8 November
Diwali / Lakshmi PujaSunday 8 NovemberCentral government gazetted holiday (falls on a Sunday)
Govardhan PujaMonday 9 NovemberRestricted (optional) holiday for central government staff
Bhai DoojTuesday 10 or Wednesday 11 NovemberCalendars differ; the central government restricted list gives 11 November

Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar, so regional panchangs can differ by a day for the smaller festivals. If your plan depends on a particular puja day, check a local panchang.

Is it a long weekend? Not automatically. Saturday and Sunday are already off for most office workers, and Diwali itself is on the Sunday. Many people will take Monday 9 November off, which makes Saturday to Monday the busy travel window, with Friday evening departures from Delhi especially full. Some private employers and state governments give a different day, so check your own holiday list.

Why Dharamshala for Diwali

  • The views. Early November is one of the clearest times of year. The post-monsoon air is clean and the snow line on the Dhauladhar is starting to drop. See our October and November guide for the wider season.
  • A gentler festival. There are lights, diyas and fireworks, but less noise and smoke than in Delhi or Chandigarh. Cold, clean evening air is a real change from the plains in November.
  • Dry trails. The Triund trek is usually in good shape in early November, though it is cold at the top after dark.
  • Short travel time. An overnight bus or a short flight gets you here, which works for a three-day break.

What Diwali Looks Like Here

Dharamshala is two places stacked on one hillside, and they celebrate differently.

Lower Dharamshala and Kotwali Bazaar. This is where Diwali is most visible. Kotwali Bazaar and the streets around it fill with stalls selling diyas, lights, rangoli colours, sweets and gifts in the days before Diwali, and Dhanteras evening is especially busy. Shops and homes are strung with lights. On Diwali night itself many local shops close early for puja, and families celebrate at home. If you want the market atmosphere, come down on Friday or Saturday evening.

Temples. The Bhagsunag Temple, an old Shiva temple next to Bhagsu village above McLeod Ganj, is lit and busier than usual around the festival. Chamunda Devi Temple, about 15 km from Dharamshala towards Palampur, is one of the most important temples in the Kangra area and draws local devotees through the festive days. Go early in the day to avoid queues. Dress modestly and follow local customs at both.

McLeod Ganj. McLeod Ganj is the centre of the Tibetan community in exile. Diwali is not a Tibetan festival: the main Tibetan new year, Losar, comes in February or March. In McLeod Ganj you will see lights on Indian-run shops and hotels and some fireworks in the evening, but monasteries and Tibetan homes carry on as normal. That makes McLeod Ganj a quieter place to spend Diwali, which suits many visitors. Be respectful around the Tsuglagkhang Complex (the Dalai Lama Temple) and monasteries: no fireworks nearby and no loud groups. Check timings locally on the day if you plan to visit.

Naddi and Dharamkot. These higher villages are calm. On a clear Diwali night you may see fireworks across the valley below. Naddi has wide views down to the Kangra plains and up to the Dhauladhar.

Fireworks. In recent years Himachal district administrations have allowed only green firecrackers and set a fixed window on Diwali night, usually 8 pm to 10 pm, with sales only by licensed vendors. We have not seen a 2026 order for Kangra district yet. Expect similar rules, and check our travel updates closer to the date. If you are sensitive to noise, a stay higher up the hill is quieter.

Early November Weather

These are our approximations based on long-term normals and what we see living here; see the facts page for our sources. The sun does most of the heating: a terrace in McLeod Ganj can feel warm at noon, but once the sun drops behind the ridge in late afternoon the temperature falls fast. Snow in town is not something to expect in early November. For later in the season, see McLeod Ganj in December.

A Three-Day Long Weekend Plan

Flight to Kangra (Gaggal)DelhiAbout 1 hour 20 minutesShortest trip; book early, fares rise near the festival
DriveDelhi9 to 11 hours, about 475 to 520 kmGroups and families; start early, festival traffic is heavy
Drive or busChandigarhAbout 6 hoursA Saturday morning start works

From Gaggal Airport, a taxi to McLeod Ganj is ₹1,500 (Alto) or ₹1,800 (Swift Dzire sedan) on our fixed fare, about 45 minutes. You can book the Gaggal to McLeod Ganj taxi before you fly. Flights into Kangra can be delayed in bad weather, though early November is usually settled. Full options are in our how to reach Dharamshala guide.

Book early. For a Friday night departure on 6 November, Volvo seats from Delhi are likely to sell out days in advance, and return buses on Monday 9 November will be busy too. Book both directions at the same time.

Day 1: Saturday 7 November

  • Arrive in the morning, check in, rest and have breakfast with a view.
  • Late morning: walk around McLeod Ganj, the Tsuglagkhang Complex and the kora path around it.
  • Afternoon: walk to Bhagsu and the Bhagsunag Temple, then on to the waterfall if you have energy.
  • Evening: take a taxi down to Kotwali Bazaar for the Choti Diwali market and lights, then come back up for dinner.

Day 2: Sunday 8 November (Diwali)

  • Option A: an early start for Triund. Start by about 8 am to be back before dark; it is a full day.
  • Option B: a calmer day. Visit Chamunda Devi Temple in the morning, then Norbulingka Institute or the tea gardens.
  • Evening: Lakshmi Puja is in the early evening. Watch the lights from a terrace in McLeod Ganj, Naddi or Dharamkot. Many restaurants stay open, but some family-run places close early for puja, so plan dinner.

Day 3: Monday 9 November

  • Sunrise at Naddi for the Dhauladhar in clear morning light.
  • A slow breakfast, a final café stop and some shopping for Tibetan handicrafts.
  • Leave for the airport or the evening Volvo. Allow extra time: the road between McLeod Ganj and lower Dharamshala is slow when everyone leaves on the same day.

For a version without the festival, see our Dharamshala 3-day itinerary.

What to Pack

  • A warm jacket or light down jacket for the evenings, and a fleece or sweater.
  • Thermal top for cold nights, especially in Naddi, Dharamkot or Triund.
  • Comfortable walking shoes with grip; McLeod Ganj is steep.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap; the daytime sun is strong at altitude.
  • A small torch for walks after dark.
  • Cash. ATMs can run low over a festival weekend.
  • Festive clothes if you plan a puja or temple visit, with a layer on top.

Where to Stay

  • McLeod Ganj for cafés, monasteries, walking and a quieter Diwali. See our McLeod Ganj guide.
  • Naddi or Dharamkot for views and calm, a short taxi ride from town. Nights are colder, so ask about heating. See Naddi.
  • Lower Dharamshala if you want to be near Kotwali Bazaar and the main market lights.

Before booking, ask whether there is a room heater or extra blankets, whether hot water runs all day, and whether the room gets sun. Browse rooms on our hotels page, including our own Mountain View rooms. Our where to stay guide compares each area in detail.

Booking Tips

  • Book transport before rooms. Rooms are usually easier to find than seats on Friday and Monday.
  • Rates can rise for the Diwali weekend, especially for Saturday night, and some stays ask for a two-night minimum. Rates usually ease again after Diwali, and mid to late November is good value.
  • Read cancellation terms before paying, in case your leave or flight changes.
  • Arrive in daylight if you are driving. The hill roads are narrow and festival traffic is heavy.
  • Consider coming the week after. If your dates are flexible, the days after Bhai Dooj are calmer, cheaper and just as clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Diwali in 2026?

Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Choti Diwali on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11 November, depending on the calendar you follow.

Is Diwali 2026 a long weekend?

Not on its own. The central government gazetted holiday for Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, so it adds no weekday off. Most people make a long weekend by taking Monday 9 November (Govardhan Puja) as leave or a restricted holiday, travelling Friday night to Monday.

What is the weather like in McLeod Ganj in early November?

Dry, clear and cool. Sunny days are around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in McLeod Ganj and nights drop to roughly 5 to 7 degrees. Lower Dharamshala is a few degrees warmer. Rain is rare, and the mountain views are among the best of the year.

Do Tibetans in McLeod Ganj celebrate Diwali?

Diwali is not a Tibetan festival, so monasteries and Tibetan homes carry on as normal. The main Tibetan new year, Losar, falls in February or March. You will still see lights on Indian-run shops and hotels and some fireworks, but McLeod Ganj is quieter than lower Dharamshala over Diwali.

What is the best way to get from Delhi to Dharamshala for Diwali?

For a three-day trip, an overnight Volvo bus on Friday night or a morning flight to Kangra (Gaggal) Airport on Saturday works best. Driving takes 9 to 11 hours and festival traffic is heavy. Book buses and flights early, because Friday departures and Monday returns fill up first.

Are firecrackers allowed in Dharamshala on Diwali?

In recent years Himachal district administrations have allowed only green firecrackers, usually between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali night, sold by licensed vendors. We have not seen a 2026 order for Kangra district yet, so check local notices closer to the date. Please avoid fireworks near monasteries and the Dalai Lama Temple.

Can I do the Triund trek on the Diwali weekend?

Usually yes. Early November is one of the best times for Triund, with dry trails and clear views. It is cold at the top after sunset, so start early, carry warm layers and check conditions at the forest checkpost before you go.

Should I book early for Diwali in Dharamshala?

Yes, especially transport. Volvo seats and flights around the Diwali weekend sell out first. Rooms can cost more for Saturday night and some ask for a two-night minimum. If your dates are flexible, the week after Diwali is calmer and better value.
