What can you see in Manali town?
1. Mall Road
The centre of Manali: the bus stand, shops, restaurants and taxi stands are all here, and Van Vihar and the Tibetan gompa are a short walk away. It is the most convenient base and the most crowded in May-June and at Christmas-New Year. On snow days, it fills with people.
2. Hadimba Devi temple
What it is: a wooden, pagoda-style temple to the goddess Hidimbi, built in 1553 by Maharaja Bahadur Singh around a cave and a rock worshipped as the deity, in the Dhungri cedar forest (Incredible India; Wikipedia). The tiered wooden tower is about 24 m tall, with carved doors.
- Timings: 8 am to 6 pm (Incredible India). Entry fee: none listed.
- Getting there: about 2 km uphill from Mall Road through the deodar forest (walk or short taxi ride).
- Nearby: a shrine to Ghatotkacha, Hidimbi’s son, stands close by.
- Tip: in peak season, go early in the day to beat the crowds.
3. Van Vihar
A park of tall deodars beside the Beas, next to Mall Road, with paddle boats on a small pond. It is ticketed, but we could not verify the current fee on an official site, so check at the gate.
4. Manali Gompa (Gadhan Thekchhokling)
A Tibetan Buddhist monastery near Mall Road built by Tibetan refugees in the 1960s (Incredible India). Visit in the morning or evening to see prayers. No official hours or fee are listed. For the far larger Tibetan heritage of Dharamshala, see our Dalai Lama temple guide.
5. Club House
An HPTDC-run recreation complex on the Old Manali road with indoor games and small rides, popular with families. We found no official current fee or hours; prices quoted online differ, so check at the counter.
6. Old Manali and the Manu temple
The old village above the Manalsu stream, with timber-and-stone houses, guesthouses and cafés. At the top is the Manu temple, dedicated to the sage Manu (Incredible India). It is a pleasant half-day on foot. The lanes are steep and narrow, so leave the car below.
What can you see near Manali (within 30 km)?
7. Vashisht temple and hot baths
Vashisht village is about 3 km from the centre of Manali, across the Beas (Incredible India). Its sulphur hot springs feed public baths with separate areas for men and women, beside temples to the sage Vashisht, Shiva and Rama.
- Bath hours: 7 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 9 pm, daily (Incredible India). Fee: none listed.
- Village hours: 7 am to 9 pm (Incredible India).
8. Jogini falls
A waterfall above Vashisht, reached by a footpath through orchards and forest that starts in the village. Travel guides put it at roughly 3 km each way; we have not found an official distance. Wear proper shoes and carry water. Avoid it in heavy rain, when paths turn slippery.
9. Jagatsukh
A village about 6 km from Manali on the left bank, with old temples including the Gaurishankar temple (Incredible India). Easy to combine with Naggar on the way down the valley.
10. Sethan
A small village about 12 km uphill from Manali via Prini, below the Hamta valley. In winter it is known for igloo stays: The Tribune reported (January 2023) that the project began with six igloos in 2017 and had grown to more than 30, run in January and February, with hosts driving guests up in 4x4s. We have not verified the 2026-27 igloo season.
11. Solang Nala
About 14 km north-west of Manali (Wikipedia), Solang is Manali’s ski slope in winter and its adventure-sports hub in summer. Activity prices are set by local operators. See our full Solang Valley guide.

12. Atal Tunnel and Sissu
The 9.02 km Atal Tunnel, opened in October 2020, has its south portal about 25 km north of Manali and cuts the Manali-Keylong road from 116 km to 71 km (Wikipedia). Beyond the north portal, Sissu in Lahaul is the usual snow stop. No permit is needed, but in winter the police decide daily how far tourist vehicles may go. Check our Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel status page.
13. Gulaba
A snow point on the Rohtang road about 27 km from Manali (Wikipedia). The Gulaba barrier is where Rohtang permits are checked; in winter, police often stop traffic here or lower down at Kothi.
Is Rohtang Pass worth it, and when is it open?
14. Rohtang Pass
At about 3,980 m, Rohtang is roughly 50 km from Manali. You need an online vehicle permit (₹500 plus a ₹50 congestion charge for cars, from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in; daily quota 1,200 vehicles). It is closed to tourist vehicles in winter and usually reopens in May; in 2026 the road opened to Marhi on 4 May. If you visit in winter, Solang and the Atal Tunnel side are the alternatives. Live status: Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel status. Winter plans: Manali in December and January.
15. Hamta Pass trek
A high pass at about 4,270 m linking the Kullu valley with Lahaul; the trek usually starts at Jobri and takes 3 to 4 days (Wikipedia). The official permit portal lists a congestion charge for vehicles going towards Hamta (₹200 car or jeep, ₹100 two-wheeler, printout compulsory). Go with an experienced, registered operator. For treks you can book with us around Dharamshala, see our treks page.
What is there to see down the Kullu valley?
16. Naggar Castle
Naggar is about 20 to 22 km south of Manali on the left bank of the Beas, at about 1,800 m (Incredible India; Wikipedia). Its castle, built by Raja Sidh Singh more than 500 years ago in the local stone-and-timber kath-kuni style, has been run by HPTDC as a heritage hotel since 1978 (Wikipedia). Visitor entry fees quoted online differ, so we have not verified the current fee; ask at reception.
17. Roerich estate and art gallery (IRMT)
The home of the Russian painter Nicholas Roerich, now run by the International Roerich Memorial Trust, about a 30-minute walk above Naggar castle (Incredible India). Official details (IRMT, checked 27 October 2026):

The district headquarters, about 40 km from Manali (Bhuntar airport is about 10 km south of Kullu). The Raghunath temple dates from 1650 under Raja Jagat Singh (Wikipedia), and the town hosts the great Kullu Dussehra fair in October; see our Kullu Dussehra 2026 guide. River rafting on the Beas runs between Manali and Kullu in the warmer months; choose operators who give life jackets and helmets.

19. Manikaran
A pilgrimage town in the Parvati valley at about 1,760 m, about 35 km from Bhuntar (so roughly 85 to 90 km from Manali). Its hot springs run at 64 to 80°C and food is cooked in them; the Manikaran Sahib gurdwara and the Ram temple, built by Raja Jagat Singh, are the main shrines (Wikipedia). It is a long day trip from Manali; staying a night in the Parvati valley is easier.
20. Kasol
A riverside village about 30 km from Bhuntar and about 3.5 to 4 km before Manikaran (Wikipedia), popular with backpackers and trekkers. See our Kasol travel guide.
