Short answer: Manali is a hill town at about 2,050 m at the head of the Kullu valley on the Beas river, roughly 550 km from Delhi and 230 to 250 km from Dharamshala by road. The most pleasant months are March to June and October to November; July and August are the wettest and bring landslide risk; snow falls mainly from December to early March. There is no railway: you come by road via Mandi and Kullu, or fly to Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar, about 50 km away.

This is our hub guide to Manali, written for travellers who often combine it with Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. Facts were checked on 27 October 2026 against official sites (Incredible India, the Kullu district permit portal, the Roerich trust) and dated news reports. Where we could not verify something, we say so.

The road via Mandi has improved: the Kiratpur-Ner Chowk four-lane opened in August 2023 (ETV Bharat), and one tube each of the Deod and Hanogi tunnels between Pandoh and Takoli opened on 11 September 2026, which officials expect to cut Mandi-Kullu travel to about an hour (Daijiworld, 10 September 2026). Full details, with railheads and flight timings, are in our guide on how to reach Manali.

Where should you stay in Manali?

AreaBest forDownsides
Mall Road and aroundFirst-time visitors, families, people without a car: bus stand, restaurants, Van Vihar and the Tibetan gompa are on footNoisy and congested in peak weeks
Old ManaliCafés, guesthouses, backpackers, a village feel near the Manu templeSteep, narrow lanes; parking is hard; icy after snow
VashishtHot-spring baths, guesthouses, quieter village life about 3 km from the town centreNarrow road; fewer big hotels

Ask before you book: Is there hot water all day and heating in winter (and is it extra)? Is there power backup? Can a car reach the door? In peak weeks, get the booking in writing.

We list checked hotels in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, not in Manali. If you are combining the two, see our hotels in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj for that leg.

  • Old Manali and the Manu temple: cafés, old houses and the shrine to the sage Manu.
  • Vashisht hot baths: sulphur springs about 3 km from the centre; baths open 7 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 9 pm (Incredible India).
  • Solang Nala (about 14 km): snow play, skiing in winter, adventure sports. See our Solang Valley guide.
  • Atal Tunnel and Sissu: the 9.02 km tunnel's south portal is about 25 km from Manali; no permit needed. Check our Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel status page before you go.
  • Naggar: the castle (an HPTDC heritage hotel since 1978) and the Roerich estate, about 20 to 22 km south.
  • Kasol and Manikaran in the Parvati valley, a long day or an overnight. See our Kasol travel guide.

All 20 sights, with timings, fees and distances, are in our list of places to visit in Manali.

How many days do you need in Manali? (3, 4 and 5-day plans)

3 days (the minimum for Manali itself):

  1. Day 1: Hadimba Devi temple, the Tibetan gompa near Mall Road, Van Vihar, then an evening in Old Manali.
  2. Day 2: Solang Nala and the Atal Tunnel side (or Rohtang with a permit, roughly May to November). Leave early.
  3. Day 3: Vashisht baths and the walk to Jogini falls, or Naggar castle and the Roerich estate (closed Mondays).

4 days: add a valley day: Jagatsukh, Naggar and Kullu town, or river rafting on the Beas near Kullu.

5 days: add Kasol and Manikaran (a long day trip or one night), or the Sethan road above Prini.

From Dharamshala: a 7 to 10-day loop of Dharamshala, Bir and Manali works well. Our Delhi, Dharamshala and Manali itinerary lays it out day by day.

Do you need a permit for Rohtang, the Atal Tunnel or Hamta?

  • Rohtang Pass: yes, a vehicle permit is needed to go beyond the Gulaba barrier. It is online only at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in, with a daily quota of 1,200 vehicles. Rohtang is closed to tourist vehicles in winter and usually reopens in May.
  • Atal Tunnel: no permit, but in winter the police decide each day how far tourist vehicles may go.
  • Hamta Pass road: the same official portal lists a congestion charge for vehicles going towards Hamta (₹200 car, ₹100 two-wheeler).
  • Green tax: every vehicle not registered in Himachal pays it to enter Manali; apply online on the same portal. The Tribune (6 June 2026) shows the green-tax barrier at Aloo Ground.

Live status and permit rules are on our Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel status page.

Is Manali safe? Roads, river and altitude

  • Roads: monsoon landslides regularly block the highway through Mandi and Kullu. After the 26 August 2025 flood, the Kullu-Manali highway reopened only after 21 days, with one-way traffic on damaged stretches (The Tribune, 17 September 2025). We found no 2026 report confirming full two-way traffic on every stretch, so ask your driver about the day's route.
  • Snow and ice: in winter, avoid driving after dark (black ice), use a local 4x4 with chains on snow days, and follow police barriers. See our winter guide.
  • River: stay well back from the Beas and side streams, especially in the monsoon. Book rafting only with operators who provide life jackets and helmets.
  • Altitude: Manali itself is about 2,050 m, but Rohtang is about 3,980 m and the Hamta Pass about 4,270 m. Go up and come down the same day, drink water, and come down if you get a bad headache, vomiting or breathlessness.
  • Emergencies: 112 (national emergency), 108 (ambulance).

How do you get from Dharamshala to Manali?

By road, about 230 to 250 km and 7 to 9 hours via Palampur, Baijnath, Joginder Nagar and Mandi. HRTC runs direct buses; a private taxi lets you stop at Palampur, Baijnath or Bir. Leave early so you drive the Mandi-Kullu-Manali stretch in daylight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Manali?

For comfortable sightseeing, March to June and October to November. October and November are the driest months by IMD averages. For snow, come between December and early March, though snow in Manali town itself is not guaranteed in December. Avoid July and August if you can: they are the wettest months and landslides often close roads.

How many days are enough for Manali?

Three days covers Manali itself: one day for Hadimba temple, Mall Road and Old Manali, one for Solang and the Atal Tunnel side, and one for Vashisht or Naggar. Four or five days lets you add Kullu, Naggar, Kasol and Manikaran without rushing.

Which is the best area to stay in Manali?

Mall Road suits first-time visitors and families without a car, since the bus stand, restaurants and sights are on foot. Old Manali suits backpackers and café lovers. Vashisht is a quieter village with hot baths about 3 km from the centre, and Prini or Jagatsukh on the left bank suit travellers with a car who want quiet and views.

Do I need a permit to visit Rohtang Pass or the Atal Tunnel?

Rohtang needs an online vehicle permit from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in to go beyond the Gulaba barrier: ₹500 per vehicle plus a ₹50 congestion charge for cars, with 1,200 vehicles allowed a day. The Atal Tunnel needs no permit, but police set daily limits in winter.

Do outside vehicles pay a green tax to enter Manali?

Yes. Every vehicle not registered in Himachal Pradesh pays a green tax to enter Manali: ₹200 for a car, ₹100 for a bike and ₹300 for a passenger vehicle, according to the official permit portal checked on 27 October 2026. It is valid for seven days and you need a printout.

How far is Manali from Dharamshala?

About 230 to 250 km by road, or 7 to 9 hours via Palampur, Baijnath, Joginder Nagar and Mandi. There is no direct flight or train between the two, so you go by HRTC bus or taxi. Leave early so the Mandi to Manali stretch is in daylight.

Is it safe to travel to Manali in the monsoon?

It is possible but risky. July and August bring the heaviest rain, and landslides and floods regularly block the highway through Mandi and Kullu. In 2025 the Beas flood of 26 August cut the Kullu-Manali highway for 21 days. If you go, keep spare days, check road status daily and stay away from the river.
