Solang Valley 2026: Things to Do, Ropeway, Snow, Paragliding & Prices

Solang Valley (Solang Nala) is about 14 km from Manali on the road to the Atal Tunnel. When the snow comes, the police rules on snow days, the ropeway to Fatru, ABVIMAS ski courses and their fees, paragliding and what rates are actually official, the taxi union rule on private cars, safety and the best time to go.

Short answer: Solang Valley, also called Solang Nala, is about 14 km north-west of Manali, just off the road to the Atal Tunnel. It is Manali’s main snow and adventure spot: skiing, snow tubing and sledding in winter, and paragliding, zorbing and horse riding when the snow melts from May. Snow usually lies here from late December, but on heavy snow days police often stop traffic at Solang or allow only 4x4s. Activity prices are set by operators, so agree the rate before you start.

This guide is for travellers adding Solang to a Manali trip, often on a Himachal circuit from Dharamshala. We checked every fact below on 27 October 2026 against official pages and dated news reports, and we say clearly where something could not be confirmed.

Where is Solang Valley and how far is it from Manali?

Solang lies about 14 km north-west of Manali, in a side valley at the head of the Kullu valley. From Manali you drive north up the Beas towards Palchan, then turn left for Solang instead of carrying on to the Atal Tunnel and Rohtang. In normal traffic it is a short drive; on winter weekends and snow days the queue can take hours.

Solang is a day trip from Manali, not a place most people stay. For the bigger picture, read our Manali travel guide, our list of places to visit in Manali and how to reach Manali.

When is there snow at Solang Valley?

Most winters, from late December. Solang is higher than Manali town, so it gets snow earlier and keeps it longer. Recent dated reports show the pattern:

DateWhat happenedSource
28 December 2024Heavy snow; about 2,000 vehicles stuck at Solang Nala; police evacuated over 10,000 tourists to Manali overnightThe Tribune, 29 Dec 2024
1 January 2026Fresh snow at Solang Nala, the Atal Tunnel, Sissu and RohtangThe Tribune, 2 Jan 2026
23 January 2026Snow in Manali town; only 4x4 vehicles allowed up to Solang Nala; skiing, snow scooters, tubing, sledding and snow biking in full swingThe Tribune, 25 Jan 2026

From May the snow melts and summer activities take over: zorbing, paragliding, parachuting and horse riding (Wikipedia). For a month-by-month winter picture, see our Manali in December and January guide and the live Himachal snowfall tracker.

ATVs and quad bikes are sold by many local operators, but we found no official rate list or rules for them, so we cannot quote a price.

How does the Solang ropeway work, and what does it cost?

Solang has a gondola ropeway from the ski area base up to Fatru, at about 3,200 m. In 2011, The Tribune reported (10 February 2011) that it had 19 gondolas of eight seats each, that a PWD technical committee had checked its safety and rescue systems, and that it is run by a private company on a lease from the Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, which receives a yearly royalty.

Fares and timings: the same report said the agreement does not cap fares, so the company sets its own prices. In 2011 the fare was Rs 100 per trip; it is far higher now. We could not verify the 2026 fare or opening hours from the operator or an official notice, so check at the counter. Travel sites quote different numbers, which is a sign they are guesses.

Tips:

  • Go early. Queues build by late morning in peak season.
  • The ropeway stops in strong wind, lightning or heavy snow.
  • It is cold at the top even when the base feels mild; take a warm layer.

Can you learn to ski at Solang?

Yes. Solang is Manali’s ski slope, and several ski agencies offer gear and lessons in winter (Wikipedia). The most structured option is the government-run Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) in Manali. Its Basic Snow Skiing course is held at Solang:

DetailABVIMAS Basic Snow Skiing course (2026 session)
Length14 days
Age10 years and above; men and women
Seats40 per course
FeeRs 16,000 (Indians), Rs 54,300 (foreigners)
2026 batchesFive batches between 11 January and 27 March
How to applyOnline only on abvimas.org; offline and postal applications were not accepted for 2026

The 2027 course dates and fees had not been published when we checked on 27 October 2026. For a single day on skis, local operators rent gear and give short lessons; rates vary by day and demand.

How much does paragliding cost at Solang?

The only official figure we found is from the Kullu district Aero Sports and River Rafting Regulatory Committee, which in June 2022 raised the tandem paragliding rate in Kullu district to Rs 3,500, from Rs 3,200 fixed in 2016 (The Tribune, 28 June 2022). We found no newer official rate list, so treat Rs 3,500 as a reference point, not a 2026 price.

Before you fly:

  • Ask to see the pilot’s registration with the tourism department and check that you get a helmet and harness that fit.
  • Agree the price, flight length and whether video is included before take-off.
  • Flights stop in bad weather. In Himachal, paragliding generally pauses in the monsoon (roughly mid-July to mid-September).

If you are coming from Dharamshala, the bigger and better-known site is Bir Billing, on the way to Manali. Read our Bir Billing paragliding guide or book a tandem flight at Bir with us.

Can you drive your own car to Solang, or must you take a local taxi?

You can drive your own car. What is not allowed is paying a private-number car to carry you. In February 2024 members of the Manali taxi operators’ union stopped private vehicles carrying tourists beyond Nehru Kund towards Solang, and the Manali SDM said that private-number vehicles cannot be used as taxis, with a challan of Rs 10,000 issued under the law (The Tribune, 11 February 2024).

In practice:

  • Hire a yellow-plate (commercial) taxi in Manali, or drive yourself.
  • On snow days, a local 4x4 with chains is the safest choice. On 23 January 2026 only 4x4s were allowed up to Solang.
  • Do not hand your car keys to a stranger who offers to drive you up in the snow.

To get to Manali in the first place, you can book a taxi from Dharamshala with us.

Can you go from Solang to the Atal Tunnel and Rohtang?

Atal Tunnel: the tunnel road continues past the Solang turn-off. On many winter days you can go through; on snow days police stop tourist vehicles at Solang Nala or beyond Nehru Kund. On 28 December 2024 tourist vehicles were barred beyond Solang Nala towards the tunnel (The Tribune).

Rohtang: closed to tourist vehicles in winter beyond the Gulaba barrier, usually reopening in May.

For the current position, the permit rules and a dated log, read our Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel status page.

Is Solang Valley safe?

Mostly yes, if you respect the weather and choose operators carefully.

  • Traffic and getting stuck. The biggest risk is being caught on the road after heavy snow, as in December 2024. Start early, return before dark and carry water, snacks and warm layers in the car.
  • Black ice. The road freezes after dark. Avoid driving back late.
  • Adventure sports. Use registered operators, wear the safety gear, and walk away from anyone who will not agree a clear price.
  • Cold. Waterproof boots and gloves matter as much as a warm jacket for snow play; trainers soak through in minutes.
  • Avalanche and closures. Beyond Solang towards the tunnel, follow police orders. They change daily.

When is the best time to visit Solang Valley?

SeasonWhat you getWatch out for
Late December to FebruarySnow, skiing, tubing, the winter sceneRoad restrictions, jams, very cold
MarchSnow often lingers; ski courses run until late MarchPatchy snow late in the month

July to mid-SeptemberLush and quietHeaviest rain in July; flying often paused; landslides
Mid-September to NovemberClear skies, fewer peopleFirst snow can come in October or November

Where should you stay for Solang?

Most visitors stay in Manali (Mall Road or Old Manali) and drive up for the day. Staying towards Palchan or Solang puts you close to the snow, but you depend on the day’s road orders and on your hotel’s heating. On the Dharamshala leg of your trip, see our checked hotels in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, and our treks page for walks before you head to Manali.
