Short answer: Bir is about 70 km from Dharamshala, a drive of 2 to 2.5 hours via Palampur and Baijnath; from McLeod Ganj add about 9 km and 30 minutes. The easiest way is a taxi: our fixed fare is ₹2,800 one way in a sedan for up to 4 people (26 October 2026). Buses are cheap but slow, usually with a change at Baijnath, and the Kangra toy train can take you as far as Baijnath Paprola, about 12 to 15 km short of Bir.

How far is Bir from Dharamshala?

About 70 km by road, which takes 2 to 2.5 hours in a car. The road is a good, winding two-lane highway through the Kangra Valley. These are the legs, with the distances used in our other guides:

LegDistanceTime by car
Dharamshala to PalampurAbout 38 km1 to 1.5 hours
Palampur to BaijnathAbout 16 km30 to 40 minutes
Baijnath to BirAbout 12 to 15 km25 to 35 minutes
Bir to the Billing take-off14 km uphill40 to 60 minutes

From McLeod Ganj, you first drive down to Dharamshala (about 9 km), so plan on roughly 80 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. Leave earlier than you think: traffic through Kotwali Bazaar and the Palampur market can slow you down on busy mornings.

Tell the driver which Bir. Bir is spread out. The Tibetan colony (Chowgan side), where most cafes, guesthouses and the paragliding landing field are, is not the same as Upper Bir, about 2 km north. Deer Park Institute advises asking for "Bir Tibetan Colony".

What does a taxi from Dharamshala to Bir cost?

Our fixed fare is ₹2,800 one way in a Swift Dzire or Etios sedan for up to 4 people, as listed on our taxi page on 26 October 2026. It includes an AC car; waiting beyond 30 minutes and the jeep from Bir up to the Billing take-off are not included. Short stops for tea, photos or a viewpoint are fine; longer sightseeing stops should be mentioned when you book so they can be quoted.

Pickup from McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot is arranged on the same booking; the exact fare is confirmed before the trip. For a return the same day, ask for a day booking rather than two one-way fares. Book on our taxi page.

Is there a bus from Dharamshala to Bir?

Yes, but it is slow, and most people change at Baijnath. We could not find a current timetable on HRTC's own website on 26 October 2026, so treat the details below as reported, not confirmed:

  • Direct buses: birhp.com, a local visitor guide, lists two daily buses from the lower Dharamshala bus stand to Bir Road and Upper Bir, at 6 am and 2 pm, taking about 4 hours. Deer Park Institute (page last updated July 2022) mentions a private direct bus at around 1 to 2 pm.
  • Via Baijnath: take a bus from Dharamshala to Baijnath, then one of the local buses that run about every half hour from Baijnath to Upper Bir (20 to 30 minutes), or a taxi for the last stretch.
  • Via Palampur: if nothing direct suits, ride to Palampur and change there for Baijnath or anything heading east.
  • Bir Road junction: buses bound for Joginder Nagar, Mandi or Kullu can drop you at the Bir Road turn-off on the highway, from where a short taxi ride takes you into Bir.

From Upper Bir or the Chowgan crossroads it is about 1 km on foot to the Tibetan colony. Buses suit backpackers with time; with luggage or a paragliding slot to make, a taxi is far less stress. Check times at the Dharamshala bus stand the day before, or on HRTC's online booking portal. Our local transport guide covers the bus stand and shared jeeps.

Can I go from Dharamshala to Bir by toy train?

Partly. There is no station in Dharamshala, and the toy train does not stop in Bir. As of 26 October 2026, the Kangra toy train runs 4 of its 7 pre-2022 train pairs, restored on 11 October 2026 (The Tribune, 12 October 2026). We found no report of a fresh suspension since then, but check NTES or call 139 on the day.

A workable plan on the October 2026 timetable:

  1. Taxi or local bus from Dharamshala to Kangra station (about 18 to 20 km, 40 minutes).
  2. Train 52465 (Kangra about 09:09, Baijnath Paprola 12:00) or 52467 (Kangra about 11:09, Baijnath Paprola 13:40).
  3. Local bus or taxi from Baijnath to Bir, about 12 to 15 km.

What about Ahju? Ahju station is about 3 km from Bir (birhp.com), but on the current timetable only one train a day reaches it: 52473, which leaves Baijnath Paprola at 08:00 and passes Ahju at about 08:40. You cannot connect to it from Dharamshala on the same day, so Ahju only works if you sleep in Baijnath or Palampur first.

Full timings, fares (about ₹30 to ₹70) and the line's history are in our Kangra toy train guide. Treat the train as a scenic ride, not a way to catch a morning paragliding slot.

Day trip or overnight in Bir?

Stay at least one night if you can. Flying usually happens in the morning, and the operator decides the exact time on the day. A same-day return means 4 to 5 hours in a car plus 3 to 4 hours in Bir for the flight.

When should I fly at Bir Billing?

The flying season runs from mid-September to mid-July. Flying is closed every year from 15 July to 15 September for the monsoon, and the best months are October and November, then March to May. In October 2025, after several accidents, the Baijnath sub-divisional administration directed that long-distance flights go in groups, made GPS trackers compulsory and said pilots' insurance papers would be checked (The Tribune, 31 October 2025). Fly only with operators registered with Himachal Pradesh Tourism.

Prices, flight lengths and booking are on our paragliding page, with the detail in the Bir Billing paragliding guide. Keep a spare morning: wind or cloud can stop flying at short notice, even in peak season.

What can I see on the way from Dharamshala to Bir?

The road passes some of the best sights in the Kangra Valley, so the drive can be a sightseeing day in itself:

Pick two stops at most if you want to reach Bir in daylight. On a fixed one-way fare, a 45-minute temple stop counts as a longer stop, so mention it when you book.

Bir to Dharamshala: the way back

The return is the same road. Bir has guesthouses and cafes but taxis are fewer, so book the return before you go, especially on Sundays in October and November. If you are flying out, our Kangra Airport guide has the details; allow 2 to 2.5 hours from Bir to Gaggal.

Where to stay

Stay in Bir for the flight, or keep your base in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj and make Bir a long day out. Browse hotels and homestays, and if you want a trek from Billing, see the guided Bir Billing to Rajgundha trek. For a longer route through the valley, follow our five-day Kangra Valley itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dharamshala Stay charges a fixed ₹2,800 one way for a sedan (Swift Dzire or Etios, up to 4 people), as listed on 26 October 2026. Waiting beyond 30 minutes and the jeep up to the Billing take-off are extra. From Kangra Airport (Gaggal) to Bir the fixed fare is ₹3,000.

Is there a direct bus from Dharamshala to Bir?

Local guides report direct buses from the lower Dharamshala bus stand to Bir (birhp.com lists 6 am and 2 pm, about 4 hours), but these times are not confirmed on HRTC. The reliable method is a bus to Baijnath, then one of the frequent local buses or a taxi for the last 12 to 15 km to Bir.

Only partly. There is no station in Dharamshala or Bir. Yes, but it is a long day: 4 to 5 hours of driving plus 3 to 4 hours in Bir for a paragliding flight. Leave Dharamshala by 6.30 to 7 am to catch the morning flying window. One night in Bir is more relaxed and leaves time for the Tibetan colony and monasteries.
